kraf··on Ask HN: How do you protect your children from internet addiction?
I'd say may restrictive parents don't teach them about how to use alcohol responsibly because they're not allowed to have it. It's obviously bad when Mr chug chug chug is teaching you
kraf··on Ask HN: How do you protect your children from internet addiction?
Sorry to be so blunt but are you advocating for letting developing minds get addicted? I hear expert after expert talking about the negative effects of those types of behavior and content. When you say they crashed a thousand times, what does that mean? Months without sleep, streaks of failure in school? I'm curious if moderation means that they are now using devices less than 7 hours a day which seems to be the average.

Wouldn't the same logic apply to drugs?

Me and my friends were over 20 years old when social media arrived and it still changed a few of them for the worse. It's a source of suffering for them and it's plain as day from the outside.

I'd advocate for letting them grow up as much as possible before having to deal with that crap while constantly discussing the dangers and negative incentives of the platforms as well as many content producers.

kraf··on How to hack the simulation?
I never know what to think about that theory. What makes you certain it's false?
kraf··on Meta lays off 11,000 people
Actually to me his explanation kind of sounds like he's blaming the economy
kraf··on Meta lays off 11,000 people
You can't be serious. I think it's rare for a company to treat developers poorly but that's beside the point.

Didn't he lie to congress, waste tens of millions of dollars on legal defense for himself and repeatedly turn a blind eye to human trafficking, voter manipulation, the spread of hate and division, genocide and more? He swept studies under the rug that show that his platforms directly led to increases in teenage suicides.

This man is not a good guy just because you feel he's nice to some people. People he depends on at that.

kraf··on iPhone = Privacy?
I feel that GrapheneOS is a good compromise. It's significantly more private than an iPhone and after 2 years of using it I really don't feel like I'm missing out on anything.
kraf··on Apple previews Lockdown Mode
Cool, is this like GrapheneOS just without being open and free?
kraf··on Anti-Abortion Centers Find Pregnant Teens Online, Then Save Their Data
Not likely... There's a good chance she's alone with the kids and has to take on multiple jobs. Don't you think she will have sacrificed a lot of her own life for unwanted kids? Do you know somebody who's happy with a situation like this? I'm sure they exist but if you'll ask me for odds in a tough country like the USA I'll tell you they're bad.
kraf··on Copilot sells code other people wrote
Of course it's bad. Noone who put up their work as open source wants some huge company taking it and selling it to get even more competitive advantage and influence in the world. And that's without mentioning the people who put that into their license pretty much explicitly. Taking GPL code and getting away with it is a failure of our justice system, and that can't be made right with throwing pennies at developers.
kraf··on Ask HN: Are there senior devs who liked switching from static to dynamic typing?
Yes this! I've worked so much with static typing and I always think this when people talk about all the bugs that it prevents. I do from time to time wonder why stuff isn't working while I'm building it in a dynamic language just to find that I have a typo somewhere and I might get annoyed but then I think about all the types I would have to write and maintain and I'm happy again. I'm convinced that most of the time there is not enough ROI to justify the added complexity and mental burden of adding something that does nothing for the problem you're trying to solve.
kraf··on Cold Showers
I think we need to be careful with trusting even our own anecdotal evidence because it's simply riddled with biases and bugs. 30+ years of experience is certainly impressive but I'd say you probably never worked in a senior team on a larger Clojure codebase for example which would give you quite the opposite impression. You should read the anecdotal evidence in that community, it's very different.
kraf··on Why do you waste so much time on the internet?
I feel you! What helped me was Mindfulness meditation, this in particular: https://wakingup.com/. You can get at least one year free there.
kraf··on Against Pair Programming
Funny, I often had the experience that code is done faster with a lot higher quality when people pair up.
kraf··on Case against OOP is understated, not overstated (2020)
Not just you, I had the same experience. I rewatched it several times over the years and understood something new every time.
kraf··on Facebook/Instagram consider shutting down in EU if they can't move data to US
This would be amazing! Please shut it down, Mark. What a breath of fresh air that would be.

It's sad this is just a tantrum.

kraf··on Austrian DSB: EU-US Data Transfers to Google Analytics Illegal
This is an extremely naive view of the situation. I'm really glad that you were able to help yourself but the material likely wasn't by Google.

In the meantime Google is using this information to manipulate your desires and actions and you can be sure as hell that it is using data about your behavior and interests to improve it's position in the market. Google buys companies and stocks and they have an advantage few of us can ever hope to have.

I promise you, Google knows you better than you know yourself and it's using that knowledge to further it's own interests without caring much about the people, countries or economies it's hurting.

kraf··on Tests aren’t enough: Case study after adding type hints to urllib3
It would be really interesting to see some examples of the logic errors that were found that couldn't be found by tests. This seems to have been a very robust library. What kind of problems did you find? From what is mentioned in the article it really doesn't sound like the investment of hundreds of hours from multiple people has been actually worth it.
kraf··on Statement from Mark Zuckerberg
> Facebook and subsequently Instagram thrive on interaction. The company is only profitable if it keeps you on its platform and it will do anything to keep you there, even at the cost of your own health.
kraf··on My small revenge on Apple
Protest is an important form of participation in a democracy, it's not petty at all. Forcing developers to add Apple ID as a sign-in method is the petty thing. The developers have no power unless they unionize in some form which seems absolutely impossible. So it seems to me that it's all a developer can really do to make a statement and I think it's brave.
kraf··on The 'Fuck You' Pattern
I don't really see an agreement here. It's also not Instagrams content they are hiding behind the implied paywall. Because that's the real hidden truth, they make you pay, not with money, but with your soul. They will stalk you everywhere to the end of your existence, try to learn everything about you and use it against you in every way they can that gains them something.

It's been bad a long time now, but not like this. You really want to tell me it was this blatant?

So yeah, fuck you, I just wanted to look at cats.

kraf··on How Silicon Valley destroyed Parler
Looks like there is already a replacement for Parler:

kraf··on How Silicon Valley destroyed Parler
This whole rant looks like a personal thing for Greenwald. Ever since leaving the Intercept because of the Biden story he became very narrow minded. He's definitely in the wrong about Parler. The platforms have a rightful expectation that you can moderate the content on your site and it was proven that they have the right tools for the job. It was also shown that a huge part of the moderators were indeed MAGAs. It also seems to have incentivized users to spread disinformation [1]

Additionally: wasn't there a post recently about the investors being unknown? I read speculations about a Mercer involvement but other than that little is known. How can Greenwald make naive assumptions like this only looking at the public figures? Aren't there connections to Russia that had to be investigated? (Can't find source right now, it's on HN though)

kraf··on How bad is your Spotify?
The cynic in me says this is a project to mine some data. I think Cambridge Analytica used IQ tests?
kraf··on California plan for wealth tax on anyone who spends 60 days a year in the state
> Do I still need to file a U.S. tax return? Yes, if you are a U.S. citizen or a resident alien living outside the United States, your worldwide income is subject to U.S. income tax, regardless of where you live.

This is taken from www.irs.gov

This kind of thing just looks american to me.

kraf··on The YouTube ban is un-American, wrong, and will backfire
The author mainly belittles the misinformation problem and doesn't get at all that we're in real trouble here. The internet is being flooded with wrong information and it gets increasingly harder for people to tell truth from fiction. Something _has to_ be done, YT can't sit and just watch it's Plattform be used to destroy democracy.
kraf··on Billionaires Build
What a naive point to make. As if what people want is in some way inherently good and righteous. I might believe something like this when talking about millionaires but people accruing thousands of millions do so by exploitation at the very least more often than not.
kraf··on WTFPython – Understanding Python through surprising snippets
Maybe "beautifully designed" is a bit much then

In my experience Python is not very nice to work with. I do like the ecosystem for data science though, it's just amazing how much there is. Hopefully the language will grow into something better now that the dictator stepped down.

kraf··on NSO hacked WhatsApp to spy on top government officials at U.S. allies
What's the deal with the end-to-end encryption here, I don't understand. If you get control over the server, you can circumvent it with WhatsApp? How did the attackers get hold of the private keys?
kraf··on Ask HN: Feasible Alternative to the MacBook Pro?
Remapping keyboard is ridiculously hard for example.. I had a somewhat working solution (never 100%) and one update destroyed everything (i think it was sierra)
kraf··on Some Details of My Personal Infrastructure

I'm really loving this idea
