kozukumi··on Can we guess your age and income, based solely on the apps on your phone?
I am a C++ programmer (mostly C++ anyway, I also use C and Java albeit not much which I always say I am a C++ programmer as 90% of what I do is C++).

My salary is quite high for a C++ programmer though but that is because I also have responsibility for a lot of things that would normally fall into the technical project or programme manager role. I help with pre-sales, technical support, architecture design and deployment, operational performance tuning, etc.

Also I live in West London where salaries are generally a bit higher anyway. I mostly work from home with a trip to the office in Vauxhall every two weeks during normal operations. The office is only a 30-40 minute train ride for me though and when we have a lot going on I will be in the office a couple of times a week if needed.

My previous experience and specialisation also help me command a higher salary, I have worked for a few large and high profile companies which does give me an edge as such.

Where are you moving to in the UK? What will you be doing?

kozukumi··on “I've been working at Mozilla for many years, from peak to decline”
Well you didn't mention that second part in your first post did you ;)

Also perhaps not burn alive but they certainly didn't have a problem with lynching them in the South did they?

Ugh I knew somebody would bring up generalisations. Yes yes I know not every single person in Russia hates and wants to kill gay people. Ask a gay person if they would go to Russia and be openly gay without worrying about it? I doubt you would find many who would be fine with doing that. I have been to Russia many times, it is an amazing place, but I have seen how anti-gay many places in Russia are so yeah I will generalise and say the majority seem to be against gays.
kozukumi··on “I've been working at Mozilla for many years, from peak to decline”
When I switched from iOS to Android at the start of the year I switched from Firefox to Chrome to give it a try again (because why not) and yup Chrome is better in pretty much every way IMHO. The only thing I actually dislike about Chrome when compared to Firefox is that Firefox saves the page state when navigating backwards but Chrome does not (such as on reddit if you have collapsed comment threads).

Literally everything else about Chrome is better. Oh yeah and it actually syncs all my settings correctly unlike on Firefox where some changes never seem to sync for some reason.

kozukumi··on “I've been working at Mozilla for many years, from peak to decline”
Well it is to be expected from places like Russia and India tbh. I am from the UK and such comments would be seen as shocking but we all know Russia hates gay people it makes sense that employees who grew up and continue to live in Russia are going to have very Russian views. Just because they work for a modern, progressive company such as Google (or Microsoft or Apple ...) isn't going to change their opinions on such things.

You would have got the same kind of responses in America if you asked about how blacks should be treated/integrated into the company back in the 1950s.

"You are a married lady older than 32 who makes more than $52,000/year"

When actually I am a co-habiting (good as married tbh) man who is 31 and makes £120,000/year. So not the greatest guess hah.

The reason IRC is still king is because it is so damn simple. You can plug literally anything into it as a bot. When I was at Facebook we used IRC extensively for builds, deployments, testing, etc. It is just ridiculously simple to plug any part of your infrastructure into it that using anything else just feels like a waste of time.

I'm still on a T420s. Other than the rather crap panel it is a great machine still. I have been holding out for a decent fanless machine. Something with the same sort of power as a 3rd or 4th gen i5/7, M.2 SSD, 1080p or better 14" IPS, etc.

They are getting very close. I work in very quiet environments and I hate fan noise. Also no moving parts!

I kind of agree, they are not as awesome as they used to be but I don't know if that is totally Lenovo's fault. Back when ThinkPad's where an IBM product laptops were bit and chunky, then we had ultrabooks and Lenovo had to compete. I believe IBM would have had to compete in the same way just like Dell and HP have had to. The Latitude series isn't as great as it was 5+ years ago. As they get thinner and lighter with less removable components they become less end-user friendly.
kozukumi··on Visual Studio Code for Go
My main machine is still a T420s and it runs every Linux version I through at it without fail. I haven't heard any bad things about more modern T series (or W series) with Linux, not sure about the L series though sorry.
kozukumi··on Visual Studio Code for Go
VS Code is a programmers text editor. It has great support for a lot of the things Atom does well for example. It isn't an IDE in the same way you most likely think of Visual Studio. It is free though so why not give it a try?

Not the same person as parent but I wouldn't recommend System 76 personally. I got caught up in the hype and got a Lemur 14" but the build quality is pretty poor and I had awful keyboard issues (since fixed I believe). If you want something that runs Linux well I have stuck with ThinkPad's. You really can't beat them in terms of performance, reliability and Linux support.
kozukumi··on SSD reliability in the real world: Google's experience
I see your points but the reality is there is no real data on how an SSD acts and fails outside of torture tests from the manufacturer or review sites.

Data centre data is still good data to help us better understand SSD lifetime and failures.

kozukumi··on Windows Now Showing Full-Screen Ads
Weather is the only app that I actually use. Groove is a joke, Edge is a tech demo and a pretty poor one at that. OneNote is junk compared to the Win32 version. I don't use Mail or Calendar as I find web applications work so much better for my workflow.
kozukumi··on Windows Now Showing Full-Screen Ads
Yeah Netflix will only do 5.1 in the app sadly. I think Chrome and Firefox are limited to 720p as well, only IE and maybe Edge does 1080p.
kozukumi··on Windows Now Showing Full-Screen Ads
Ever since switching to Windows 10 I have found myself using Ubuntu more and more. To the point where I mostly boot Windows 10 once a week just to keep it and some software up to date.

I like some things about Windows 10, for example the new snap features for programs is nice, overall the system looks quite nice as well. Their virtual desktop implementation is kind of lacking but at least it is there. Explorer is actually quite decent these days as well.

However it just keeps pissing me off. I use SumatraPDF as my PDF reader, it is a great program. I can't think of a time when it hasn't worked perfectly yet for the 5th time now Windows has helpfully informed me it had to restore Edge as the default PDF reader for "reasons", of course I have no idea what these reasons are!

I have Office 2016 installed and yet the stupid "Get Office 365" bullshit constantly nags me and reinstalls itself when the Store does some background updating. I had to hunt down a bloody PowerShell command to force remove it.

Oh yes and in Microsoft's infinite wisdom they auto-install Twitter and Candy Crush Saga on my so-called "Professional" version of Windows which I paid for on a new machine!

Honestly it is a fucking horrible experience. Their own modern Universal apps are garbage. They release these totally shit apps with the idea that "oh we can update constantly via the Store!" but the apps they are releasing are just plain awful. I have used tech demos that work better ffs.

I honestly can't stand the Windows 10 experience. The new way of doing things is just horrible. I end up using Windows 10 just like I used Windows 7/8 with Win32 apps because there are still not any good Universal apps as the platform is just garbage by the looks of it. I mean if the maker of the platform can't even make decent apps what does that say about the platform?!

Ubuntu isn't perfect but at least it doesn't fuck with me every other day to the point where I just want to walk away from the computer.

Yes Linux still has some rough around the edges but I have found that installing Chrome makes everything web-related "just work" as well as on Windows. Netflix? Check! Flash? Check! Also TIS-100 has a Linux version so that keeps me happy :)

kozukumi··on List of failed and over-budget custom software projects
I do not know how the funding was split but NHS England was the primary however I would assume all NHS bodies put something into the pot for funding?
kozukumi··on List of failed and over-budget custom software projects
The modern NHS system in the UK was the biggest fuck up I have ever seen. I worked with people who also worked on the project. They are seriously amazing people but apparently all the layers of management, red tape and politics was, according to my friends, the worst they have ever experienced. Two friends were so traumatised by the experience they ended up taking 2 years off work to travel/recover.

The sad thing is it shouldn't have been such a difficult thing to develop. Complex sure but no more complex than many other similar systems. It was destroyed by too much meddling from the government adding, removing and changing the spec every other day and many, many managers just finding non-sense jobs that were totally pointless.

It is shocking it went so over budget and was allowed to continue doing so for so, so long.

kozukumi··on The Game Boy, a Hardware Autopsy – Part 1: The CPU
The beginning of what looks to be a pretty interesting series on the Game Boy. The video does an excellent job of explaining how things work right down to the CPU registers. It also gives a nice explanation and comparison of assembly programming. For a somewhat difficult subject I thought they did a fantastic job of explaining the basics. A very well done video.

kozukumi··on Telegram has now 100M Monthly Active Users
I use Telegram as a cross-platform alternative to SMS which offers zero security anyway so anything Telegram has is better than what I would get with SMS anyway.

I have pretty small hands yet I am ok with the size for about 90% of my use. I wanted a mini-tablet and that is exactly what I got :)

I wouldn't want to run with it though! I can imagine that would be a pain in the ass as it is big. Not super heavy or bulky but I can't see it being very comfortable just because of the dimensions.

kozukumi··on Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge
Ok I should be clear about what I mean when I say I can't fault it. Obviously nothing is perfect. If you want me to really take things a part then sure I would have preferred the headphone jack be on the bottom as that is my personal preference. I would put OIS in the camera. I would improve the stock Android camera app.

However I still can't really fault the phone as it is. Sure I would change some things but nothing about it is fundamentally faulty.

kozukumi··on Linux Mint downloads (briefly) compromised
Fucking bang on point. Mint has a nice out of the box experience but after using it for a while you begin to see all the shit they stuffed in the cracks. It is a shame as Cinnamon is a lovely DE, I wish there were an official Ubuntu build with Cinnamon as the default DE similar to Xubuntu with Xfce.
kozukumi··on Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge
A fair point. However I buy my phone SIM free for cash. I do not expect to keep this more than a year because like you said a built in battery isn't great. I will sell this phone/trade it in and buy whatever the new phone I want is. Doing it this way means I still get a good price for selling my phone to offset the cost of the new phone. Sure I spend about £200-250 on a phone each year but I am not tied into a contract for 24 months and I am on a great SIM only plan with unlimited 4G data for £15/month. When I calculate it over 24 months I save money over getting the same phone on a contract.
kozukumi··on Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge
well there are two areas to my incredible claim :)

first is that the battery easily lasts me 2 days sometimes into a 3rd day if I use it a little less than normal.

however I only ever charge it for 15-20 minutes and in that time the fast charge gets me back up to 80something %. It is amazing how fast it charges. I never worry about the battery life on this phone which is the first time I have ever said that since smartphone came along.

for me the fast charging is actually the more important thing for me as being able to get 50+% battery charge in around 15 minutes is just awesome.

kozukumi··on Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge
Looks great but no way am I going to go back to Samsung now I have a Nexus 6P. In the past the Nexus phones have always been kinda "nice but not great" but the 6P is easily one of best phones you can buy. The camera is top-notch, the screen is stunning, performance is awesome and battery life is incredible. And stock Android is bliss. I can't really fault it :)

Does it taste nice? That means it probably causes cancer.

I jest but it does seem like everything nice either causes heart disease and/or cancer.

kozukumi··on Why I haven't given up on C++
To be honest I am just very lazy and would appreciate a simple GUI to make the build and project files. I guess Visual Studio has made me lazier ;)
