kossTKR··on Kremlin runs disinformation campaign to undermine Zelensky, documents show
This is a prime example of the lack of nuance. Putin is a psycho no doubt, but the war machine is violently gross too.

The fact that if you question the war machine in the slightest you're then "with the enemy", is so bizarrely dystopian. Go read orwell, please.

kossTKR··on Reddit beats film industry again, won't have to reveal pirates' IP addresses
If word spread that Reddit would name people writing specific comments about various "controversial" topics i think millions would flee?

The entire spirit of Reddit is because of anonymity, from askreddit, to intimate questions, to political talk. Also there's lots of lying, fantasy, larping and fiction.

kossTKR··on Mozilla names new CEO as it pivots to data privacy
Straight from wikipedia:

Negative salary-achievements correlation controversy

In 2018 she received a total of $2,458,350 in compensation from Mozilla, which represents a 400% payrise since 2008.[15] On the same period, Firefox marketshare was down 85%. When asked about her salary she stated "I learned that my pay was about an 80% discount to market. Meaning that competitive roles elsewhere were paying about 5 times as much. That's too big a discount to ask people and their families to commit to."

In 2020, after returning to the position of CEO, her salary had risen to over $3 million (in 2021, her salary rose again to over $5 million,[16] and again to nearly $7 million in 2022[17]). In August of the same year the Mozilla Corporation laid off approximately 250 employees due to shrinking revenues, after previously laying off roughly 70 in January (prior to the pandemic). Baker blamed this on the COVID-19 pandemic, despite revenue rising to record highs in 2019, and market share shrinking.[18]

In other words, no she definitely is. She fired 250 devs while doubling her pay multiple times to live a luxurious life while lying about the cause. People have to feed their families, she doesn't need that much and this is not good community spirit.

It gets even more interesting googling bit further and becomes a brilliant example of either "money corrupts people" or "i'm romanticising my upperclass upbringing", because she apparently went from patos filled stories about her dad paying just above minimum wage (lol) to firing 250 devs while she ran with the money:

"[about her parents] So I would call them progressive. I would call them really focused on -- well, so for example, he would never pay minimum wage. They ran a small business. It was pretty-- Weber: Doing what? Baker: -- hand to mouth. A pewter factory, making wine goblets and gift items out of pewter. Not so easy to do in the Bay Area, which is expensive. And so he would hire someone at minimum wage. But he had a period of time -- it was six weeks, or two months, or three months, or whatever it was-- after a probationary period, and then he refused. He felt he needed to pay a living wage."

kossTKR··on Mozilla names new CEO as it pivots to data privacy
She gave herself 20-30 million dollars while the company tanked in every measurable way and devs got fired.

She's the reason we have Firefox and the modern web? What in the actual flippin bizarro dimension?

Besides being a member of the parasitic upper classes the leeches on all of our work while robbing to live on yachts and in mansions i don't see what she excelled at.

It's depressing how much this class of people is filled with nepotism, favours, family and an almost aristocratic talentlessness besides the random figureheads appointed PR.

kossTKR··on Web design inspiration catalog
Sorry but this seems like yet another poster like splash page inspiration sites like Dribble, Awwwards, Behance, Httpster, Gsap, Godly.

I've yet to find any sites with actual real world UX examples; actual content, actual text, not miles of scrolling and enormous whitespace, 1 picture and a size 200 font - that's a poster, cool but irrelevant.

If you are doing work for a company you need to put lots actual content on the screen while maintaining elegance, that is the hard part.

kossTKR··on In loving memory of square checkbox
This is an interesting approach. I remember classic osx was also pretty good at dense content.
kossTKR··on In loving memory of square checkbox
Does anyone have a design inspiration site that isn't this useless portfolio garbage?

It's incredibly annoying, and i say that with a an interest art, the abstract, cool concepts etc. but i want to see sites and interfaces with "actual messy real life content" not just one big image or whatever idiotic whitespace hell everyone's doing with way too much scrolling on Awwwards, Behance, Httpster, Gsap etc.

It's relatively easy to make a big font, a big picture and a 3d effect look cool, much harder to present 15+ items on one page and create a cool visual narrative around it that both grabs attention and lets the user go solo if he wants to without scrolling two miles.

I feel like a few newspapers were okay examples of this 5-10 years ago, but now they've also gone whitespace crazy.

We need a site like "Real life UX" or "Actual usable design" inspiration.

Why not? Their entire presentation a month ago was fake.
kossTKR··on Diskprices.com makes $5k/month with affiliate marketing
All business sans the most basic is based on schemes, theatre, magic.

It’s way more fantastical to believe in some supreme meritocracy.

Off course a good chunk is based on talent but the “there’s no conspiracies” seem like libertarian propaganda to me after a life in business where politics, marketing, law and nepotism were the real lessons.

The world actually runs on conspiracies - that’s how the human social mind works.

kossTKR··on Ask HN: Will Meta-frameworks kill normal frameworks?
Aren't some people also - at least trying - to move in the opposite with pure javascript, Petite Vue, Alpine etc. because of framework and tooling fatigue?

I have at least experimented in that direction.

kossTKR··on Diskprices.com makes $5k/month with affiliate marketing
I don't know what's going on here but Amazon normally shuts stuff like this down in 1 second because you're not allowed to make "affiliate sites with no other content" like much of this space.

Really not applicable for anyone else than this dude.

kossTKR··on Spotube: Open-source Spotify-Youtube client
I also use Spotify and like you have discovered a bunch of stuff.

Spotify is just the state of things, the monopoly. Like lots of other current status quos bad for on everyone but investors, old money, the richest but there's no real alternatives.

Though i know at least some smaller artists have moved off the platform, but people live in the biggest apps now so it's hard.

Soundcloud somehow never really translated and bandcamp just went bad after it was sold to investors.

I wonder if the scene is ripe for new platforms that's better for artists.

kossTKR··on Spotube: Open-source Spotify-Youtube client
Deserve to be paid by whom though, Spotify already pays nothing?

A song with 10000000 (10 million) streams , a pretty big hit and only reserved for big artists will give you 500 dollars before cuts, taxes etc.

So not even the biggest artists will make anything substantial.

kossTKR··on Infowars and Goop sell the same exact pseudoscientific "wellness" products
Selling a multivitamin you could buy for a few dollars in a big cloud of smoke and mirrors is a scam in my opinion.

Just say you sell vitamin d. Not some ultra esoteric branded product with extreme markups and hints at something it definitely isn't - namely anything to do with "Greens.

And doing this as a "certified science man" is even more ridiculous.

kossTKR··on Infowars and Goop sell the same exact pseudoscientific "wellness" products
Huberman is almost as bad which is funny to me because he's regarded as an authority.

Worst is the completely useless powder called Athletic Greens that he pushes left and right.

There must _really_ be big bucks in supplements and lifestyle products like this, as it's coming just as much from very learned Harvard PhD's as Alex Jones.

Currently it's bro science connected to life extension, cold baths, red and blue light gadgets etc. and before that Paleo after an endless chain of products going back to the end of the 19'th century where the bourgeoisie were electrocuting themselves, poisoning themselves or lying in various useless massage machinery.

kossTKR··on A battery has replaced Hawaii's last coal plant
I don't have any of those "irrational" fears so it's not a cope but a theory.
kossTKR··on The Internet Is Full of AI Dogshit
Okay so this is pretty bleak isn't it, for the entrepreneurs, grassroots, startups, or just free enterprise in the most basic form?

I hope making software, apps, coding and designing is still a viable path to take when everyone has been captured into apps owned by the richest people on earth and no one will go to the open marketplace / "internet" anymore.

Will smaller scale tech entrepreneurship die?

kossTKR··on A battery has replaced Hawaii's last coal plant
I have a theory that this, like fear of heights, claustrophobia, agoraphobia etc. are actually "extremely natural" because they're all good for survival ie. instincts unlearned somehow culturally, but would be the baseline if you teleported a Palaeolithic, Sumerian, Viking or whatever into our modern complex and somewhat claustrophobic technological life.
kossTKR··on Tuna species popular in sashimi and poke bowls in sharp decline
I have family working as a UN advisor on sustainable food chains and she says the entire ecosystem in the oceans could potentially collapse in 10 to 20 years if we don't stop large scale fishing entirely, especially trawl and unreported fishing destroying the seafloor and acidity going haywire.

I have no idea if this is correct but i'm pretty sure around 1 billion rely on this food and can't imagine what would happen if this somehow got removed from the system.

Does anyone know if it's really that bad?

kossTKR··on Cleaning up my 200GB iCloud with some JavaScript
Tangent but does anyone else find iCloud sync random / slow?

The smart thing about having both an iPhone and a Macbook should potentially be; snap a bunch of photos, instantly have them available on the computer - but no. Apple apparently chooses a random time depending on 100 factors to upload the photos in the next 30 minutes to 7 days.

So you often have to airdrop a bunch of photos files completely invalidating the purpose of the sync function.

kossTKR··on What should we know about APFS special files?
What idiot approved this design though?

I have a 512 GB SSD and handle large files often on the go. I've had snapshots taking up 100+ GB with no explanation on my Macbook, just missing space.

Only figured this out when i googled support forums, used 3 party software or went into the terminal.

Apple and their "Magick", confuses regular users and wastes my time.

kossTKR··on Maestro: A Linux-compatible kernel in Rust
Has there ever been any examples of malware/viruses jumping around through levels like this?

I'm honestly interested to know, because it sounds like a huge deal here, but in my laymans ears very cool and sci fi!

kossTKR··on Ask HN: What has quantum computing achieved so far?
Interesting. What are the motivations behind this funding? What is to gain?

As far as i can see there is quite a lot of "quantum safe" encryption so what kind of historical data exists lying around with lots of value?

kossTKR··on EU Cyber Resilience Act: What does it mean for open source?
Yeah this could be terrible unless there's very specific exceptions for sub 1mil revenue players.

Lots of big players are already providing shit software to millions of customers especially through government contracts because they've hired armies of legal and sales teams, squashing the little guy in the process.

If just providing some small web service built on top of open source now requires hiring a huge legal team, well goodbye to any entrepreneurship.

I know this because i've seen big players win contracts over actually talented people 9 of 10 times because they can play this regulation game, and i've seen small companies burn 100s of thousands in consultancy fees over GDPR that made zero difference for their Wordpress setup that a talented coder could have used 10 hours to fix.

That said the intentions are good, but for some reason EU thinks small players should have the same extreme measures as Facebook, Google, ie the actual reasons this regulation was made in the first place. Bizarre.

kossTKR··on You've just been fucked by psyops [video]
Painting the picture that the alternative to hyper aggressive war machine is North Korea is a little bizarre to me to be honest.
kossTKR··on You've just been fucked by psyops [video]
I get what you mean and me neither but the relatively modern ideological lens, that most wars are fought for democracy, or to protect liberalism is just not true from a historical or economical standpoint.

Most US wars are fought because of realpolitics, resources, opening markets, company contracts, like a game of Civilization, empires battling empires, or plutocrats taking over markets in poorer parts of the world through brute force foreign policy, just like in the rest of history.

There is no US exceptionalism even though i love many things uniquely about your country as a whole and wouldn't live in neo USSR ( unless part of the intelligentsia, which in some parts look like parts of the american plutocracy ).

kossTKR··on You've just been fucked by psyops [video]
Wars are horrible and they're almost always done for geopolitical power or resources, not to protect enlightened democracy or whatever.
kossTKR··on You've just been fucked by psyops [video]
Oh those annoying endless rants, not the millions dead in wars, those who ended their lives by death squads because they wanted their own resources, they aren't that important, but those pesky rants!

There's been no stop to the US war machine, they're 100% succesfull.

kossTKR··on Where Are the Sanity Checks?
I still don't get Apples bizarre new snapshot system.

What i know is that a few years ago and back i would never have this problem, but now i'm often having gigantic snapshot files taking up extreme amounts of space like 100 gigabytes on my 500gb Macbook. Probably because i work with large files. And this is not explained to anyone unless they research why the hell deleting files does not give more space in some apple support forum.

OSX is stil my go to OS but these unexplained magic elements with no explanation are getting completely out of hand now.
