kookamamie··on My AI-driven identity crisis
I don't mind the downvotes. I get it - it is a hard pill to swallow, especially when so many identify with being a programmer.

> It’s not clear whether AI will take our programming jobs

I think it's safe to say it is pretty clear.

As an example, you can power 10 developers with the highest tier of Claude Code Max for a year under the price of a new developer. At this point, having plenty of personal experience with the tool, I'd pick the former option.

There, one less job for a developer.

kookamamie··on 29 years later, Settlers II gets Amiga release
Sure, but what defined Amigas were 7-8 MHz CPUs with a lot of dedicated chips for graphics, audio, etc.

No one had this stuff.

kookamamie··on Weathering Software Winter (2022)
It is still unclear to me what the author wants to build. The story is cool to the level hippies-on-a-boat can be, but I'm unsure of its message, apart from software requiring internet can be tricky while at seas.

Why, of all names possible, you thought TILF was the best one?
kookamamie··on Getting good results from Claude Code
I ran out of Opus this week in 2-3 hour of use with the 100/month sub. It was not particularly heavy use, either.
kookamamie··on Getting good results from Claude Code
No. If you want use Claude anything serious, you will need the 200/month subscription. I have tried them all and you will run out of Opus too quickly with the lesser ones on a daily basis.
kookamamie··on Getting good results from Claude Code
Exactly this. In my view people over-think the use of Claude in many cases.
kookamamie··on Getting good results from Claude Code
I think it can already replace mid-level engineers, based on my experience. Also, you really don't need meticulously crafted specs for this - I've completed multiple projects with Claude with loose specs, iterating in case the direction is not looking good. You can always esc-out in case you see it doing something you didn't wish for.
kookamamie··on Getting good results from Claude Code
I think the guidelines look over-engineered. I'm getting good results with a bare minimum set of instructions, such as "use spaces instead of tabs. This is in C++/Python and computer vision.

Sounds complicated, to be honest. Could this not be achieved easier via monocular depth estimation, for example?

> The Dogemania test ran at a smooth 60 FPS on my M4 Pro MacBook Pro until reaching around 400 images

I ran Dogemania on Chrome until 1400 images at steady 60 FPS at which point I got bored and closed the tab.

kookamamie··on From XML to JSON to CBOR
The article reads like a semi-slop with its numerous lists and overly long explanations of obvious things, such as how XML came to be.

kookamamie··on I designed my own fast game streaming video codec – PyroWave
Not bad. The closest competition would be NDI from NewTek, now Vizrt. It targets similar bitrate and latency ranges.
kookamamie··on AI for Coding: Why Most Developers Are Getting It Wrong
Have fun maintaining a slop blob.

It's not just about the craft. It's about understability, explainability and accountability.

kookamamie··on Rust running on every GPU
Sure. The performance-purist in me would be very doubtful about the result's optimality, though.
kookamamie··on Rust running on every GPU
Exactly. Not sure why it would be better to run Rust on Nvidia GPUs compared to actual CUDA code.

I get the idea of added abstraction, but do think it becomes a bit jack-of-all-tradesey.
