I've seen this behaviour where existing employees were forming a "cult" to cover each other, and promote one another, while technical debt piled up, and at the end basically brought products to a halt.
I'm not saying that VIP hire is some magic stick that will fix everything, but if they consider a taboo to even mention such a thing, this is not a environment to be in.
- If you get the money and opportunity to hire really senior/well known dev to lead your eng. team, would yo do it
- Ummm no, we believe in our team, and their strong knowledge, there is no problem they cannot solve (or something along those lines)
Run.
I'm from EU, and worked for NA companies, and got most of that covered.

"SNP genotyping results for saliva derived DNA (n = 39) illustrated a 98.7% concordance when compared with blood DNA. In conclusion, when compared with blood DNA and tested on the DMET array, saliva-derived DNA provided adequate genotyping quality with a significant lower number of SNP calls. Saliva-derived DNA does perform very well if it contains greater than 31.3% human amplifiable DNA." [2]

Quake Live also has very nice race mode, clone of defrag, and of course, defrag servers are still alive and have players on them!
I immediately remembered John's stories about porting RAGE to iOS.
EU is much more electronic music orientated, and D.J.'s here are quite different, yet same, they do the exactly the same thing this article describes.
Just watch this repetitive, yet awesome 3 minute buildup, leading to total madness: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5-b33rhevQ
And that's just first clip that comes to mind.
Just to clarify, I do not have access to anything that you might call substantial money, nor do i plan to spend even 1/30 of my monthly income.
I just wonder what could I do if I spend my monthly budget that I dedicated to buying fun steam games and silly hardware (e.g. buying camera lenses even tho I shoot as total amateur 5 times per year)
I was just wandering what can i do if I redirect that small amount of money + utilizing some of my spare time and computers/programming knowledge.
But, as I was saying, I totally missed on the whole field, so I don't even know where to start.
I want to approac this as a developer, maybe write some software, maybe host some trading bots (is that even viable strategy?)
I will NOT spent any money or savings, rest assured, and I really do appreciate your concern! I can tell it was honest!
Any prediction on what "new" currency could emerge, or will it be only ETH and bTC?
I like somewhat different approach, I would take some project I think its done well, and where I no longer see obvious room for improvement.
Then I would to go github and find same or similar kind of projects, ideally created by companies with strong engineering culture (e.g. Google) and compare how I did stuff to how they do it.
You would be VERY surprised to learn just how much other people would differently solve same problems you have been facing, and you can learn a lot from comparing other people solutions to something you are already comfortable with.

Reading this was quite devastating, not even started, and I feel like I already lost, even though my side project has next to nothing to do with my current industry.
"Hey, we are building this VR hardware and games for it, we would need ~1M to finish it".
I think that there is high chance that you would get some weird looks, and possibly few remarks how that is a "dead technology, tried once, and obviously failed".
And then, fast forward couple of years there is whole industry around VR, jobs, hardware, software, the whole eco system.
You only need one strong player in a field, and suddenly everyone and your neighbour kid is doing it.
That worked quite nice, for ~15 years, and whole community was created, things worked quite nice, diehard users used BNC and terminals, but lately everyone is switching to Discord.
Main matchmaking is still on IRC, but other sub-groups migrated to discord long ago, and that scares me, because no one at the moment knows what will happen with Discord year or two from now.
