kodeninja··on Show HN: MapChat – A simple location based chat in 300 lines of code
On my Chrome+OS X Yosemite, I opened it in a separate tab, and went back to working on something else. After a couple of minutes, the laptop really started heating up :). The `Google Chrome Helper` associated with this tab was the culprit, hogging 100% CPU. Killed it and everything came back to normal.

Anyone else experience that?

kodeninja··on Show HN: InboxSDK by Streak (YC S11) – Build Apps inside Gmail
Yasoon looks cool! Is it Windows-only? At work we run Outlook on OS X, so not sure if it's usable there.
kodeninja··on Build Apps for Cars on the New Automatic Developer Platform
@thejo so if we buy the 2nd Gen Link, will it keep exposing more data, simply via firmware upgrades, or will there be a 3rd Gen Link, at some point? I guess my question is, will these features be purely firmware-based, or will they actually require upgrades to the Link hardware as well?
kodeninja··on Build Apps for Cars on the New Automatic Developer Platform
I have the exact same situation (1st Gen Link). I take the public transport to office and my wife drives the car during the day. So, the app only registers data when I'm driving (evenings/weekends). All the data during the day is not registered :(.

Perhaps the 2nd Gen Link solves this, now that it has a built-in GPS?

Also, of late, it's been really troubling me connecting to my iPhone 6. I have a support ticket open with Automatic, where they basically suggested deleting and re-installing the Automatic iOS App. Going to try that today to see if it works.

I'm considering getting the 2nd Gen Link, but would love to know if these issues have been resolved. Also, a discount would be nice :D!

kodeninja··on Why we made Vorlon.js and how to use it to debug your JavaScript remotely
I cloned the project from https://github.com/MicrosoftDX/Vorlonjs.git to play around with creating a plugin. The code in the plugin TS files (e.g. `Plugins/Vorlon/plugins/sample/sample.ts`) keeps reporting errors like `Cannot find name 'Core'`, `Cannot find name 'RuntimeSide'` etc. Is that expected?

I have run `npm i` from the project root.

  $ node -v && npm -v

kodeninja··on Dr. Arjun Srinivasan: We’ve Reached “The End of Antibiotics, Period”
On the topic of Bacteriophages, I seem to recall reading in Biology class a long time ago, that the reason the water of the Ganges can be stored for a long time without getting spoilt is because of the presence of Bacteriophages! Certainly useful to humans!
kodeninja··on Books For Game Developers
Interestingly, the most recent books mentioned in the list are from 2007 (e.g. GPU Gems 3)! What are some of the latest books in game programming that are really good, especially for mobile?

kodeninja··on Fight against Corruption in India using technology
I think RTI has helped to some extent in easing the troubles of the common man. I have personally witnessed and experienced its effect in many cases. Right from the "I got my passport/PF etc., that was pending for 6 months, in 2 weeks after filing an RTI" to bigger issues like getting public infrastructure improved (e.g. roads created/repaired), RTI has had a positive impact overall. Of course, it's not clear if any action is taken against the officials in question, but this is a tremendously helpful first step and a possible deterrent to blatant and uncontrolled corruption.
kodeninja··on Eclipse launches new language to cut down Java boilerplate - Extend
Eclipse does offer variable suggestion/completion using Ctrl+Space. Works for class names, variables, method names etc. Camel Case search is another nice feature. I personally use SpringSource STS (especially for the Groovy support). And btw, IDEA freezes up as much as Eclipse does. It's more of a problem with desktop Java applications, than with a specific IDE.

kodeninja··on Which programming book you just couldn’t stop reading from start to end?
Effective Java was, for me, one of the programming books that was simply unputdownable! I've always been a fan of Joshua Bloch's work and this book is a real gem for any practicing Java pro!
