It is not a good indicator of competence.
Most people pay a third party (after having paid for law school) to cram the information into their head in a short period of time.
RHCE for example isn't great, but having passed both I think it's actually better than the bar exam, since they at least hand you a live broken server.
I've been rejected by companies who were using open source code I wrote.
LKQD is a video advertising platform that handles hundreds of billions of events daily. We're a small division, fewer than 40 people, in a large public company (Nexstar Media Group, NASDAQ: NXST).
You'd be working with me on the core adserver, written in Scala, with supporting microservices in Go. The deployment environment is Linux on Kubernetes.
Need to have:
- Clear communication
- Experience in a language with a decent type system (Scala, Rust, Ocaml, F#)
Nice to have: - Ad industry background (OpenRTB, VAST, VPAID)
Email me at cody@lkqd.com, I promise to be respectful of your time.Great example of this is Napoleon's Triumph: http://www.simmonsgames.com/products/Austerlitz/Map.html
Rust is a nice language for threaded programming, but the async situation is a trainwreck 4 years in the making.
I've seen people copy protobuf definitions from repo to repo because they couldn't get them building consistently from a different directory, never mind issues with different versions of the go protoc plugin.
The ecosystem around scala is great, you get to use any jvm library using a relatively sane ML derived language that is safer than most other alternatives.
Speaking as a manager, I've seen 2x differences in comp for the same position and relative experience, at the same company.
Given the choice between a unityped shitshow and a shitshow where I can at least lean on the compiler, I know which one I'll pick every time.
