kochthesecond··on Apple introduces 8-core MacBook Pro
me too, I think I spent 2 hours on the replacement just to get the old battery loose from all the glue, afraid I'd puncture it in the process. So. Much. Glue.
kochthesecond··on Apple introduces 8-core MacBook Pro
indeed, the cheapest official vendor I could find in my country would have been about $600 for a battery replacement on my 2014 model. It's ludicrous. I bought a battery online for $60 or something including shipping from China...
kochthesecond··on Apache Software Foundation joins GitHub open source community
github/gitlab is a good place to browse the code. What better place to have a single click to create the fork you need?

And you do need that fork. If you want any kind of CI/CD stuff on the repo you sort of need to pull the changes in from a third party source to make sure nothing bad will happen.

now try to keep your patches up to date with constant rebases and comments from reviewers. Maybe some parts are ok, but some are not so you go back and forth for a couple of weeks. Fewer people will want to go through this extra hassle that they don't even get paid for.

kochthesecond··on Linux touchpad like a Macbook: progress and a call for help
I must say that in general sleep mode has been working pretty well for me over the past 10 years in Linux. I had issues on my destop, but tracked it down to a USB headset sometimes not correctly honoring sleep states. I also had a slight problem with one of my laptops when Bluetooth was paired, Bluetooth tended to be broken after coming back from sleep. though I have had more issues my current 2017 MacBook. often when I take it out of my bag after a weekend it will be on 1% battery. it stopped happening around Autumn last year so I think they fixed it.
kochthesecond··on Telegram gets 3M new signups during Facebook apps’ outage
Feature wise I feel Signal has all the stuff I want in a messenger now. I use it on many different platforms and still experience a few too many bugs. I report them, but it breaks in subtle ways that are hard to reproduce.

I think Telegram still has a better user experience.

kochthesecond··on The State of Caching in Go
Very cool, I have missed Caffeine when making stuff in go!
kochthesecond··on Java Streams and State
I also believe you can apply the "do one thing per line" here. it's a bit weird to do math directly in the constructor argument.
kochthesecond··on W3schools.dev Redirects to Mozilla Developer Network
I am of the opposite experience. I find the w3schools site to be so terribly out of date, with such terrible approach to learning and documentation I found it did me more harm than good.

If you actually read the docs on MDN, you can write stuff that actually work instead of copying random snippets of code until it does what you want to do.

kochthesecond··on Practical Go: Real-world advice for writing maintainable Go programs
Hi, never heard of V before. Looks great. What are the cons?

No runtime and such a small language!

How does it do threads? Networking? Any story on cross-compiling?

kochthesecond··on We Lost Our Ability to Mend
That is surprisingly useful information to acquire while browsing HN. Thanks!
kochthesecond··on You probably don't need a single-page app
not to mention the UX people coming up with neat animations and subflows with gradually revealed content.
kochthesecond··on Activision-Blizzard layoffs after reporting record results
I completely agree and hope they unionize. I've worked with two people that used to work at mid size game studios and it sounds like hell. They both quit a couple of years (!) after having kids.
kochthesecond··on Memory usage of a toy C# server and client with 500K concurrent connections on
I am a long term Java developer, but C# is looking really, really nice.

The eco system still seems wonky, but NuGet probably isnt more weird than that of Golang.

kochthesecond··on DeepMind – StarCraft II Demonstration
it's largely overvalued, but you probably can't be a pro without at least ~150, slightly less than 3 actions per second, increasing as the game goes on.
kochthesecond··on DeepMind – StarCraft II Demonstration
12 pool is a valid opening. A worker rush is not.
kochthesecond··on DeepMind – StarCraft II Demonstration
Worker rushes do not work at pro level. Cannon rushes and proxy buildings sometimes work if caught off guard. The openings in sc2 is more akin to the mind games of poker than chess. Information is hidden so there is nothing to keep you honest.
kochthesecond··on DeepMind – StarCraft II Demonstration
Except that worker rushes are actually terrible and very easy to beat if you don't panic. the insane AI is easy to panic though.
kochthesecond··on DeepMind – StarCraft II Demonstration
I used to be bitter and hate it with a passion. I realized it has a very important part in the psychology of the game, especially in series. it creates very exciting moments for spectators when used well and helps keep people honest in their openings. If you as a pro never cheese, you will get taken advantage of.
kochthesecond··on How I Finally Hit 2000 on Lichess and Improved My Rating
Yeah, I am just a user, and I think they have a pretty good ux. The menues could be a bit less confusing, but the game experience is excellent.
kochthesecond··on Excercise in futility – Why exercise alone won't save us
I did exactly this for a few months when losing a bit of weight. You quickly get pretty good at eyeballing portions.

What I did find the most interesting though, was how hard it was to stop. After only 3 months of cutting, it took me over a year to restore a non-obsessive relationship with food. I am comfortable with my weight now, and it was a very useful exercise that I would recommend most try out. You get a valuable understanding of how much work a bar of chocolate or a beer actually is.

kochthesecond··on Living and working in Sweden as engineers
8 week vacation and paid car and free lunches? I have never heard of anything like this.
kochthesecond··on Living and working in Sweden as engineers
It focused on treatment and seeing a specialist.

"Oh, you need a specialist. You will get a letter for an appointment in about 4 months." 4 months later when you go see the specialist, he decides he needs an MRI to diagnose. Wait another 3 months for the scan.

Unless you are literally dying right now, this is the reality of many health care systems. This scenario is about 3x more common in national health plan systems than in insurance based ones.

kochthesecond··on Living and working in Sweden as engineers
Yeah, I didn't find my old source, it was a news article I remembered that compared spending per capita and typical time to treat a condition.

I did find this though that says 2x:

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2674671

kochthesecond··on Living and working in Sweden as engineers
Americans have the best care in the world (for those with decent insurance) but they also spend nearly 3x as much on health care than Britain. I wish I could cite these numbers, but I cant find the link anymore.
kochthesecond··on Living and working in Sweden as engineers
I believe it is better to say their purchasing power compared to an unskilled worker, is much, much weaker compared to a lot of other places.

I dont make that much less than an american engineer with my experience, but 40% is washed away in taxes. Also, I generally work 0 overtime 37,5H weeks.

kochthesecond··on Node.js Fundamentals: Web Server Without Dependencies
Sinatra and express brought something very important and retaught me something: value simplicity. I can't imagine how a lot of projects would look like without their influence.
kochthesecond··on Show HN: Supportify – Support your top Spotify artists by buying on Bandcamp
Bandcamp, not eMusic!
kochthesecond··on NHS.UK frontend
I second this sentiment. I would like to add that in public sector, deadlines are absolute. That new law? It will be effective from January 1st. So you have a deadline. Now the law is not in effect yet on _any_ of your dependency systems until the deadline so testing is a nightmare. And if you make a mistake, someone might not get their benefits or miss their parole. And the public will be furious.

In private sector I have met a lot more understanding with regards to managing risk in a smart and scalable way.

If I remember correctly, their revenue streams are looking fantastic. Not every internet business needs to be billion dollar unicorns to survive.
kochthesecond··on Go 2, here we come
Coming from languages that lack such a «convention», I quite like Context. Try implementing something similar in java or even node is also a giant pain
