kochthesecond··on Garmin obtains decryption key after ransomware attack
I am also having a hard time with this.

Taking all our services down this hard would require enormous efforts in coordination, potentially months of preparation to make sure it would execute satisfactory.

I think occam must be at work here. There must be some simpler reason why this attack is such a disaster.

Yeah, Id also accept all my data zeroed instead of financing hackers.

It still puzzles me greatly how this ransomware has such a huge impact. How Does it allow hacking and encrypting the db servers?

kochthesecond··on Why companies lose their best innovators (2019)
Ugh.. This hits too close to home.
kochthesecond··on Notable – A Markdown-based note-taking app
I use standard-notes for its focus on zero knowledge design and simple markdown plus potential economic viability.
kochthesecond··on Show HN: I made an elegant SwiftUI timeline
Thanks for warning, i need my data plan
kochthesecond··on Cloudflare outage on July 17, 2020
When Google Cloud went down a few years ago, they were unable to access internal monitoring because the bad bgp change overloaded their networks if i remember correctly.
kochthesecond··on NoiseTorch: Real-time microphone noise suppression on Linux written in Go
This is pretty cool!
kochthesecond··on Who’s behind Wednesday’s epic Twitter hack?
VPN gives a little extra layer against vulnerabilities in any packages your internal services depend on.
kochthesecond··on Can Facebook provide postmortems on their iOS SDK crashes?
Login with Facebook tremendously reduces friction on signup. We get a verified email that we can trust, the name of the customer and a profile photo that automatically renews. But even more important we dont need to ask for a password.

We can also ask for more, such as phone number (we dont ask).

kochthesecond··on Ask HN: What's the worst piece of software you use everyday?
I wont herald Signal as epitome og UX, but I have never seen most of these issues on iOS. My biggest complaint now is general slowness/sluggish and the fact that sometimes messages will still arrive out of order...
kochthesecond··on Linux touchpad: preliminary project funding, survey results
I would also donate 25-50$ to this, but once or twice. No recurring please

Well, the Mac trackpad is an absolute joy to use..

The quality of trackpads outside of Macs used to annoy me to no end, but my 2018 zenbook with libinput isn't that bad. It's like 80% of the way there for a quarter of the price.

kochthesecond··on Finding new physics will require a new particle collider
I think its too dismissive to claim it will have 0 practical applications. Often this type of fundamental research take decades to result in something useful in an unexpected way. We can only go where the roads lead us, who are we to dismiss the roads not taken.
kochthesecond··on Please stop recommending Gitflow
I am with you on this. Its been years since I had an issue with git, and branching strategies are not that hard. In smaller teams most solution that show up are also usable. I would argue git is actually a fantastic tool that gives immense value year after year for no cost compared to any other alternative. There is a learning curve though.
kochthesecond··on Don’t try to sanitize input – escape output
Thanks for explaining this better than I could.
kochthesecond··on What's SAP?
I have seen such customizations go badly soooo many times..
kochthesecond··on Show HN: Proton Native V2 – Create Cross Platform Desktop Apps with React
This looks like incredible work. Great job.
kochthesecond··on iOS 13 app tracking alert has dramatically cut location data flow to ad industry
We also had to do this to get enough background time. I can honestly say we don't track you. customers also get mad when the app intermittent stops doing its job.

I just hope the app review team doesn't throw us out again.

kochthesecond··on Plastic bag sales in England halved in past year
You are of course correct, I couldn't find the source anymore and I remembered incorrectly.
kochthesecond··on Plastic bag sales in England halved in past year
I was wrong, it was 43 times.

kochthesecond··on Plastic bag sales in England halved in past year
Paper bags are roughly 250 times worse than a plastic bag. Even worse if you color it.
kochthesecond··on Plastic bag sales in England halved in past year
Paper bags are incredibly inefficient, and requires large swaths of forest.

Plastic bags are incredibly resource efficient, but you must keep it from ever getting into nature.

kochthesecond··on Plastic bag sales in England halved in past year
They did a comparison to cloth bags here. you have to use a colored clothbag about 30.000 times before you break even with a plastic bag. a non colored cloth bag was about 23.000 uses. Plastic bags are super efficient with regards to resource consumption, but you must never leave them in nature. There is also very little to gain from recycling plastic bags, so you would ideally burn them somewhere close to usage, and use the heat for heating.
kochthesecond··on When a rewrite isn’t: rebuilding Slack on the desktop
I have preferred this method myself when dealing with simple calls (calls that need no further external information). jumping through 7 files just to find the API request that gets shipped is slightly insane.

but how do you put the result back in the store? how about displaying a default failure screen?

kochthesecond··on A problem worse than Zoom?
Yes it is reasonable, but it should be subject to CORS rules as any address.
kochthesecond··on How I encrypt my data in the cloud
Yes, sorry I was imprecise. I meant reusing IVs for equal blocks only, to be able to see duplicate data.
kochthesecond··on DeepMind’s StarCraft II agent will play anonymously on battle.net
The problem with the AI is that it is mechanically perfect with perfect accuracy every time. The AI never misclicks, even when under pressure.
kochthesecond··on How I encrypt my data in the cloud
if you encrypt in a way that enables the service to do dedupe, you are either reusing IVs and encryption keys across items (bad) and leaking information that two items are the same item.
kochthesecond··on How to support open-source software and stay sane
When said scientists want to build some new equipment, they get involved and they use professionals. When said scientists need to build their new lab, they hire professionals. When they need code for their research projects they?
kochthesecond··on Absolute truths I unlearned as junior developer
I'm 29 and can barely remember the code I wrote last week.

Comments don't get updated when the requirements for the code change, more often than not end up as misleading.

The only thing worth commenting are actual libraries that are maintained, and 'magic values'.
