kochikame··on The avocado is an evolutionary anachronism
But this falls down a little bit if you apply it to animals.

I mean, chickens are tasty and all, and there are probably billions of them in the world right now... but do you call living in a cage with your beak cut off "prospering"? From a purely genetic propagation point of view they are prospering I guess... but at what cost?

kochikame··on Confessions of a Reddit Karma Whore
But, that's what those people are commonly called; "karma whores". It's not like the writers of the article are trying to insult them. They're just using the name that everyone uses for them.

If it is found out, it is punished

See the whole Unidan saga a few years back for how the mighty can fall once they get busted using sockpuppets

kochikame··on If I ingest a grain of sand size piece of the Chernobyl Reactor No.4 core
https://xkcd.com/radiation/

This masterfully illustrates the relative risks of various sources of radiation, something that the typical person on the street knows almost nothing about but thinks they do

I live in Japan and read up on this topic after the Fukushima disaster

kochikame··on The End of Mobile
Yeah, it just means people are buying devices less frequently

"Mobile" (however defined) is obviously not going anywhere. I think it's just a click-bait headline

kochikame··on Fortnite is free, but kids are getting bullied into spending money
I think they're usually called "no skins"
kochikame··on Networks of Low-Stakes, Casual Friendships
According to the MBTI it is not a spectrum; you have a preference for one or the other.

This doesn't mean you can't or don't behave in ways outside your preference; we all do, everyday. It just means that, all other things being equal, you will lean toward extraversion or introversion.

Also, please note that MBTI E/I does not equate to extraversion/introversion as it is known and understood by society at large.

kochikame··on South Korea's booming 'webtoons'
Japanese people are reading ad-supported free manga on their phones and tablets constantly nowadays.

There are several competing services and they seem to be spending a lot on advertising right now if the amount of TV commercials is anything to go by

kochikame··on Japan’s Self-Defence Forces Are Beginning to Focus on China
China is barely capable of taking over Taiwan without enormous cost and material and human loss. Japan is far, far harder to "invade" and is barely even something they would consider.

Even an "attack" (something short of an invasion), consisting of surgical strikes (and what, nukes?) would be prohibitively costly in every way possible and would also be 100% guaranteed to bring the US in to the conflict.

The Chinese government likes having Japan around as a useful lightning conductor for public anger, which redirects protests away from them. They are Japan's biggest trading partner. They are not going to invade any country this useful and valuable to them.

Please don't use a word like "invade" lightly; it's very, very far from ever being a reality.

kochikame··on Agony of an African Programmer (2014)
You must know enough of the politics and history f the region to realize how unlikely it would be for an Iraqi or Iranian of any profession to simply "go work in Israel"
kochikame··on When Doctors Thought ‘Wanderlust’ Was a Psychological Condition
Some people claim that gen known as DRD4-7R is responsible for wanderlust

https://www.contiki.com/six-two/wanderlust-gene-travel/

Little bit different to what the article is talking about, but pertinent to the discussion in the comments

kochikame··on Japan’s Self-Defence Forces Are Beginning to Focus on China
Not a tornado, a hurricane (or typhoon as it's called in the Eastern hemisphere)
kochikame··on Japan’s Self-Defence Forces Are Beginning to Focus on China
This is ridiculous.

No one in Japan is afraid of the Japanese military.

Utter fiction

kochikame··on Japan’s Self-Defence Forces Are Beginning to Focus on China
Of course all the wartime stuff like kamikaze was awful, but no one is expecting that to ever happen again

You have this idea that the Japanese military will become a runaway juggernaut subjugating Japan under its will, and this is simply ridiculous. No signs point to it.

I could almost accuse you of fear mongering

Also, your accusation that most Japanese are "very uneducated when it comes to politics/history" is anecdotal and incomplete at best, comically reductive at worst. Do you even read Japanese? Do you not see the amount of considered, deep analysis and discussion on TV and in the newspapers? Do you not see the huge numbers of books on history in the bookshops?

In any case, it is ridiculous to claim that "most" (or even some) Japanese people live in fear of the SDF. You'd be laughed out of the room for claiming that in front of anyone with even a passing knowledge of Japan.

kochikame··on Ask HN: Products that suck but you still use?
To this day, typing on a smartphone still annoys the crap out of me on a daily basis

Dumbphones were better in this regard

kochikame··on Ask HN: Products that suck but you still use?
I was so happy when I ditched iTunes a few years back

It's entirely replaceable with other services and software now

kochikame··on Ask HN: Products that suck but you still use?
I know the reason why, but I still get annoyed when basically everything I want to do with a PDF can never be done with Acrobat
kochikame··on A Cult Japanese Retailer Making Billions Breaking All the Rules
It really is one of the worst examples of a retailer anywhere. Shelf after shelf of semi-disposable, plastic tat, destined for landfill. Crap, processed food. Knock off cosmetics. Crowded, uncomfortable, unfriendly.

If this is the future, I don't want it.

kochikame··on Lover of the Strange, Barbarianologist of the Farthest Peripheries
This was brilliant. You rarely read anything (in English at least) from the Chinese view of Western civilization during the age of empire. Great writing, very cool.
kochikame··on OECD Says 14% of Jobs Will Disappear in Next 10 Years
Which is the upside of automation and AI "taking jobs away from people"; the adoption of new technologies makes things cheaper, easier and more accessible, so more people do it than before, resulting in a bigger market and more net economic activity in that space, and maybe even more of the people who carry out that role, not fewer.

kochikame··on The Problem with ‘5 Whys’ (2016)
> "5 Why" style analysis is really easy to steer toward whatever you want to blame.

This is the big issue. Ideology, bias and self-interest creep in and you can easily end up blaming whatever it is that you personally disagree with.

And that's to not even mention the "unknown unknowns", which by their very nature cannot be factored in to a "5 Whys" process, no matter their real world relevance to the problem at hand

kochikame··on Arctic Has Entered 'Unprecedented State' That Threatens Global Climate Stability
The whole northern hemisphere is already experiencing things like extended winters/delayed spring, unusually wet and dry seasons, more intense summers and winters, more frequent and stronger typhoons etc.

It's here, it's happening. It's going to start driving up prices of fruits and vegetables, and impact other economic activity very, very soon.

It's not "if" but "how much" it's going to effect us

kochikame··on Ask HN: My friend is a founder of a blockchain startup. I'm skeptical. What now?
The problems he wants to address (e.g. fraud prevention in charity money transactions) could be easily solved using conventional databases with basic security measures

kochikame··on How the Samoan Tattoo Survived Colonialism
I get the pride but there comes a point when "Irish Americans" can no longer speak for Irish people, a point that I feel is much sooner than 4th generation

Like the commenter above you, I am very suspicious of Americans with only tenuous connections to a far off land claiming expertise/knowledge/understanding of that culture

kochikame··on Busy Person Patterns (2006) [pdf]
This is pretty cool

Should be the kind of thing that is in new hire orientations and onboarding training (especially for new grad hires) but basically never is

kochikame··on IBM Watson Overpromised and Underdelivered on AI Health Care
If they'd marketed it this way from the beginning it would have been fine. AI is great at that kind of pattern-matching.

The problem is that Watson was sold as a kind of "AI Doctor", which is pretty much ludicrous
