knotty66··on Atom text editor 1.4 released
I like it, but there was that joke doing the rounds that Atom was an acronym for 'A Terabyte Of Memory'.
knotty66··on A fast Lisp interpreter in Dart
https://github.com/mame/quine-relay

100 language cyclic quine relay.

knotty66··on Ask HN: What are your favourite tools to work with?
i3 Window Manager. I wish Apple would design a WM inspired by i3 but with the amount of polish they usually apply.
knotty66··on Ask HN: Programmers Above 50, Is It Possible to Have a Career Past Your 50s?
Why do you mention your age in your job application?
knotty66··on React and Angular Meeting
I thought XAML was really simple to learn.
knotty66··on Clinton ran own computer system for her official emails
Did you read about parallel construction?

knotty66··on Slack Acquires Screenhero (YC W13)
Hipchat has had integration for everything we have ever needed. Slack is far prettier and more polished though. And lately Hipchat has been unreliable, so we are thinking of moving on that basis.
knotty66··on Intel Compute Stick
Worth mentioning NUCs don't come with memory or storage.
knotty66··on EIZO Announces Monitor with 1920x1920 Resolution
Economies of scale.
knotty66··on SmartDataCenter and Manta are now open source
This is unbelievably neat. So much good news coming out of Joyent recently.

LX branded zones revived, funding to make SmartOS Docker compatible and now SDC and Manta are open sourced. I love SmartOS.

It feels so elegant and well designed.

knotty66··on Immigration Crackdown on Digital Nomads in Chiang Mai, Thailand
I personally wouldn't work from Punspace or anywhere similar in Thailand until the laws are clarified. It's too risky. Even when not under military rule, the Thai state, police and immigration change laws - or their interpretation of them - on a whim.

One day the laws will change without notice or they'll come looking for tea-money and all the rich farang workers (on tourist visas) herded together in somewhere like Punspace will be like shooting fish in a barrel for them. It won't matter that the work is being done for foreign companies. The digital-nomad type aren't the priority of Thailands tourist board. They typically spend very little compared to the rich Chinese and Japanese tourist they try to attract.

I'd rather do any work from my hotel room or condo or from somewhere like wawee coffee where you would have plausible deniability than a designated 'co-workers space' - where the only reason you would be there is to work.

knotty66··on LIVE NOW: Glenn Greenwald, Assange, and Kim Dot Com in NZ
That non-stop banging and drilling under the embassy during the Julian Assange talk is pretty annoying.
knotty66··on UK emergency phone and internet data storage law to be brought in
Don't the security services have this data already? Through Tempora/XKeyscore etc. So national security should already be covered.
knotty66··on Gmail API
We currently use Gmail IMAP with IDLE to support this use case. It works great, so I hope they don't drop IMAP without a suitable replacement like webhooks.
knotty66··on The Making of Elite
David Braben got an MBE yesterday in the Queens birthday honours list.

Elite: Dangerous is looking incredible too, it could be the first killer app for the Oculus Rift.

knotty66··on Running OS X Mavericks under QEMU with KVM
If you want a really nice hackintosh laptop with good build quality and great performance for the money you can't go wrong with this:

A second hand i5 HP ProBook with 4GB RAM. £126. Add to this a 120GB Samsung EVO SSD for £55 from Amazon, and a £6 wifi card from eBay. Less than £200 all in.

Everything works out of the box on this laptop except the wifi, which you have to replace (or use a USB adapter).

I configured one last week. Mavericks runs perfectly. Quartz Express, Sleep/Wake, all works.

knotty66··on UK government's password checker sends plaintext password in the URL over HTTP
Even over HTTPS it wouldn't be secure. The password is in the URL so would be stored in the users browser history, and possibly also web-server logs and sent as referrer headers with assets on the secured page.
knotty66··on Show HN: I've been making one HTML5 game per week. Here's my 10th game
The first jump was flat out impossible for me on Chrome Version 31.0.1650.26 beta, even in incognito mode. Tried in Firefox and made it easily ...
knotty66··on Go by Example
Nice and clean. I like it. Maybe it would be nice to have comments with up/down votability ala Stackoverflow.
knotty66··on Jubilee, a new Rack server for JRuby based on the high-performance Vert.x
Cool, that's pretty impressive.

knotty66··on Show HN: Hosted Docker-as-a-Service on SSDs for $5
Nice. Looking forward to seeing how this and all the other Docker based PAAS ecosystems like Flynn, Deis, Tsuru, Shipbuilder, CoreOS etc pan out.
knotty66··on Be first to get a Nexus 5
Or echo -e "\aNexus 5 is launched" perhaps.
knotty66··on CoreOS: Boot on Bare Metal with PXE
SmartOS is often booted from a USB flash drive too.
knotty66··on NSA hacked into encrypted UN communications, leaked documents show
Their auditing sounds weak. They seemed to have no idea what documents Snowden had taken.
knotty66··on Computer can read letters directly from the brain
Tin foil hat time has long gone.
knotty66··on Automatically Encrypting all Incoming Email
Maybe Fully Homomorphic Encryption will help here? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homomorphic_encryption

Not sure how practical this is at the moment, or will be in the future. Hopefully an expert can weigh in ?

knotty66··on UK Authorities Destroy Guardian's Hard Drives
All the other UK papers (and the BBC) have barely even REPORTED on any of these issues, exclusives or not.

To look at those papers you wouldn't suspect something of this magnitude is even going on.
