knewjax··on Exploring Design: Outstanding Start Pages
I love all the sites on this post. There is a diffrence between websites built for art and websites built for commmerce. There is no reason these sites need to be indexed well or valid CSS, they are not trying to monetize the user, or get top placement in google. Most are just experiments in new ways to visualize and display information. As flash and other methods become more advanced we will be able to use more navigation techniques like these while giving up less as far as SEO. New ideas like this help us rethink how people interact with the internet and ultimatley lead to innovation. Art is about breaking the rules. These sites are art.

Yes for sure, we know we still have to do some distance and monetary conversions for outside the US. We will get there!
knewjax··on Bandsintown is Looking for a developer to join the team
Hi, We are looking for a developer who is interested in joining a startup in it's infancy stages. This means, no high paying salaries at this point, but instead a chance to get in at the ground floor with all the ups and downs of trying to build something independetly from the begining. If anyone coders feel they are looking for venture to join, go to http://www.dreamvex.com and tell us a little about yourself, your skills and what you are looking for in our contact form. Thanks,

and if you haven't checked out http://www.bandsintown.com yet have a look before contacting us!

Thank you for the input staunch. I def agree with everything you said. I also think its good to set goals for yourself and think well into the future, even though most of your original ideas and plans will end up far from where you had anticipated.

knewjax··on Co-founders wanted for TicketMaster killer.
http://www.jimdero.com/News2003/Sept14Ticketmaster.htm

the part about pearl jam is what should interest you. It talks about why it is so hard to move away from ticketmaster for an artist. And you can assume the same for a venue if they decided to host a non ticketmaster or livenation show. Those companies may in turn refuse to host future higher paying shows at that venue. Unethical but it has allegedly taken place. Just for reference, but I agree there needs to be a change.

I don't know much about college venues but that seems like a promising idea to focus on.

knewjax··on Rejected Y Combinator company Bandsintown.com is now Live!
We'll we allow anyone to post shows. So we are hoping that as we grow, dedicated fans, the artists themselves, or the venues will add their schedules to keep things up to date.

Hi, Where are you located? My guess is there are no shows in you area or you have the time frame set to small. Try expanding your time frame, choose to show unsigned artists, and extend the distance.

this is an example of my homepage for Boston, MA with my preferences. http://www.bandsintown.com/user/knewjax

Hi Paul, The Police is probably smaller on your screen because out of the favorite artists youve added we have not picked up on a similar relationship. If you add the police as a favorite artist, or a bands similar to them, they will grow in size. The Site is built to compliment your musical taste so the tagcloud is not completely based on overall popularity.

for instance the police are very large on my tag cloud. http://www.bandsintown.com/user/knewjax/

I agree 100%.
knewjax··on Rejected Y Combinator company Bandsintown.com is now Live!
Thats awesome. Thanks, We own a few more ___intown domains as well, but i like this idea a lot.
knewjax··on Rejected Y Combinator company Bandsintown.com is now Live!
We will improve the ability to edit the location, Especially for users who are signed up and just want to check out other areas, without changing their account settings.

And as far as the sizing, it is based on overall popularity when you are not logged in. When you sign up and add favorite artists it begins to personalize itself to your taste in music.

Hopefully this makes the site useful to everyone, but VERY VERY useful once you signup and begin to add your favorite artists.

Yeah we do see the ability for expansion as well. Under another brand of course because you are right we do limit ourselves with our stratedgy.

The reason i do not use eventful and tools like that is because of the lack of focus. I know with bandsintown that I will be discovering new local shows and nothing else. This was our primary goal.

knewjax··on Rejected Y Combinator company Bandsintown.com is now Live!
Yes when you are not logged in the tag cloud represents popularity.

When you sign up and add favorite artists the tag cloud then represents your personal musical tastes instead.

The reason for using labeling ourselves as "reject" in this forum, is because There seems to be a large interest in ycombinator companies. Even the ones who were rejected.

We do not label ourselves as this outside of this forum. I also hope it inspires some of the other companies who may not have been accepted as well.

thanks for the feedback. I hope to do as much as i can to make it as useful as posisble for as many people as i can. I appreciate your comments and feedback, I hope to be able to apply this kind of funtionality to other ideas in the future as well.
knewjax··on Bandsintown on Mashable
I agree with you about how obvious the meaning of what's showing in the clouds is, and what the sizing is based on. We have also have had some critiques on some of the visibility of the links and also the lack of directions or explinations on what the site actually does. At the same time, our users have raved about the simplicity once they pass the slight learning curve... so it's a toss up in my mind, and a balance that we are going to have to think about once we have more of our core features in place, and can really analyze the entire user experience.

Rejected. I am sure there will be a lot of successful accepeted and rejected ycombinator companies in the future though.

to sign up before the public launch use "revolution" as your invite code.
knewjax··on Rejected Y Combinator Company, Bandsintown now in private beta! Sign up For your Invite Code
We still have some major features we want in place before we open it to the public. But the people on ycombinator are probably some of the most critical we will find so we decided to give an early sneak peak to you guys.

We will be sending out a second batch of codes today. But as we have noticed that some of our emails are going straight to junk.

So if you applied for an invite code last week please type your email address in as the invite code to gain full access. Let me know if anyone has questions. Thanks

Make sure you check your junk mail folder for your invite code. We sent them out to about half the list today.
knewjax··on Rejected Y Combinator Company, Bandsintown now in private beta! Sign up For your Invite Code
hi, yeah this used to be a mailing list signup that i restructured for the beta invites. It has some quirks, such as the required confirmation email. But the service is free to capture emails until you use them to actually send out emails. So no this is not the best solution for a beta signup, but it does the trick.
knewjax··on Rejected Y Combinator Company, Bandsintown now in private beta! Sign up For your Invite Code
Yeah this is also my personal favorite of what I have seen so far.
knewjax··on Rejected Y Combinator Company, Bandsintown now in private beta! Sign up For your Invite Code
Thank you for pointing the annoyance of this out to me. I will remove the email confirmation step.

The invite codes will be sent out personally that is why you did not receive it instantly with the confirmation.

Thanks for the help, We will adjust this.

knewjax··on Rejected Y Combinator Company, Bandsintown now in private beta! Sign up For your Invite Code
Thank you... As I had mentioned in one of my previous posts to all the startups, I think rejection should be more motivation for all of you than acceptance. It should push you harder to prove yourself and your idea.

Also invitations will be sent out in batches over the next week or so... But I am looking forward to everyones comments and help.

We have alot in the works, but are very very happy with what we have put together for you.

knewjax··on Any one got examples of good myspace pages for web apps/ sites?

More of a teaser than a real marketing tool at this point. But you never know. Can't hurt.

knewjax··on Still looking for another startup to share our Boston office with
There are also two of us there at the moment. You can see our space at dreamvex.com. We are in another companies larger office and we pay $1000 for the month. So we can all split that evenly meaning $250 a person / per month. It is 24 hour access. And a realy really nice space. Best building and office in the area by far. It's a good temporary solution for developing your product because there is plenty of quite space and a conference room for use.
knewjax··on Still looking for another startup to share our Boston office with
We have some space in davis square, somerville. This is about as close to cambridge as you can get for those of you not from boston. The office is steps from the T in the nicest buulding in davis square. There is no lease and nothing formal to sign. It's myself and a co-founder and we would like to try and find two other founders to share it with and share some ideas if willing.
knewjax··on At what point do you quit your dayjob to focus on your startup?
I gave my notice this past friday. Best day of my life. My co-founder left his job in December.
knewjax··on Domain Names and Service Trades?
There are a bunch of like minded people on here that can probably do a lot to help eachother out. Until I find a good site that helps in this process or until a YCombinator Startup builds this, maybe we try something here? Basically I think alot of us can offer some help to other groups by offering something as a trade off for something they specialize in.

I can offer: Design work, Office Space (A few Desks in Davis Square,Boston), and Plenty Of Bad Domain Names: JARGN.COM, AMBOOSH.COM, EDUDISCOUNT.COM, EDUDISCOUNTS.COM, HOUSINGINTOWN.COM , MYNDLAB.COM ,MYOLDJOB.COM ,SHITSHO.COM, SHOFFEUR.COM, SHOFILE.COM, SHOSPOT.COM, SHOSTOP.COM, SHOWBEA.COM, SHOWBIE.COM, SHOWFER.COM, SHOWFFER.COM, SHOWPHER.COM, SHOWSTORM.COM ,SHOZONE.COM, STRICTLYTIX.COM, TIXGO.COM, TOURPIDO.COM,

You never know who may need what So if anyone is interested in anything maybe we can work something out. It would really be awesome to find a group of guys to work in our space with us. Its nice and some extra creativity in the atmosphere would be awesome.
