kjsbfkjbf··on Putin’s Media Struggle to Deal with HBO’s Chernobyl
Is it a choice when alternatives are die poor and homeless? Oh wait, that is their fate after they leave the army.

Think about how many people take jobs they don't like: why did they choose it? Pretending like you have a "choice" when the other choice is dying/suffering, is harmful to growth imo.

I'm not commenting on the SU fetishism in this thread, but just making a general statement.

kjsbfkjbf··on SoftBank could bring down the house?
So we know what we must do.
kjsbfkjbf··on SoftBank could bring down the house?
Close. There are no incentives for a government or a standards body to malign profit for the sake of anything other than longer-term profit. So, capitalism does not work... in any configuration.

If regulation truly worked we would not be so fucked with regards to our rape of the Earth.

kjsbfkjbf··on The decline of the family has unleashed an epidemic of loneliness
That's American culture for you.

Capitalists force a narrative that everyone is inherently "lazy" and will be good for nothing if not for the jobs/existential crises they so conveniently provided by the capitalists.

I relate heavily to your description of your daughter (and am also the same age!). I have a great career by most standards and am independent but also prefer to be home and near my parents/extended family whenever I can. Why? Mostly because I enjoy their company, but even just being in the same house feels nice.

In contrast the girls I have dated do not understand how I prioritize/spend so much time with my family instead of anyone/everything else.

kjsbfkjbf··on Nebula: A paid alternative to YouTube, curated by the creators
From the few content creators in my circle -- they all despise advertising as a way to monetize their production. It almost forces the content creator to refactor their content in such a way that plays nice with advertising. Not to mention income from advertising is inconsistent.

I much prefer the model Nebula uses even if I'm not their target audience (I do not consume much YouTube these days).

kjsbfkjbf··on Nebula: A paid alternative to YouTube, curated by the creators
Not really.

An individual can absolutely value their output at any value they so choose and be correct. The idea that "the market" is a "fair" determinant of value should be challenged at every step lest we allow people to suffer because they do not have enough money to pay for the "fair" amount for healthcare.

That is not even mentioning that we do not have perfect information (to come to a "fair" value) and that facets orthogonal to product value (i.e. marketing, brand inertia) play a huge role in determining what customers are willing to pay for.

But even playing along with the naive model: Tidal has a non-zero amount of paying customers. Some people enjoy music (+ Tidal exclusives) enough to treat it as more than a cost:convenience ratio.

Rather, it's a bunch of artists sitting around saying, "Hey, what if we got paid fairly?".
kjsbfkjbf··on Economists Are Obsessed with Job Creation – How About Less Work? (2017)
What then about skills or creations that society deems less useful? Think of the classic starving artist trope. All those underground artists who make little to no money.
kjsbfkjbf··on Economists Are Obsessed with Job Creation – How About Less Work? (2017)
Usually? Revolution.
kjsbfkjbf··on Economists Are Obsessed with Job Creation – How About Less Work? (2017)
Yes! I wish people would take a better look at history and recognize that _throughout_ history we've had the ruling class make claims about the structure and survival of society and invariably those claims require the status quo of oppressed people.

Shorter work days and society will collapse. No slavery and society will collapse. Providing worker's rights and society will collapse. We find a way to survive because... the majority of people _are_ workers.

The only thing that collapses when we get rid of a slave population is the capitalist's free lunch.

kjsbfkjbf··on Economists Are Obsessed with Job Creation – How About Less Work? (2017)
Especially considering many start programmers and engineers seemingly exist to increase revenue of complete luxury services like Netflix.
kjsbfkjbf··on Economists Are Obsessed with Job Creation – How About Less Work? (2017)
It would also be nice to frame "necessary" and "unnecessary".

I would think developments like saving the environment, healthcare research, improving public transportation, energy consumption, etc. are all "necessary" work. Building Uber or Twitter or Facebook? I'd lean more towards "unnecessary".

HackerNews is so close to arriving at the conclusion that most jobs (including their own prized "skilled" engineering) are worthless outside of capital accumulation. :)

kjsbfkjbf··on Prisoner’s dilemma shows exploitation is a basic property of human society
As common with articles that speak about "human nature" or other such things, they make an assertion that the study does not. The study seeks to provide a possible explanation for the _origin_ of exploitation in society. It does not, in fact, support that "exploitation is a basic property of human society".

Disappointed in the essentialism.

kjsbfkjbf··on Police in Canada Are Tracking People’s ‘Negative’ Behavior in a ‘Risk’ Database
> In Europe in particular, police officers are not such an enemy.

Everywhere in the world the police are your enemy. They exist as the manifestation of a state's domestic violence.

kjsbfkjbf··on Listen to TurboTax Lie to Get Out of Refunding Overcharged Customers
Right. Under capitalism everyone is acting rationally here. Everyone is using whatever methods they can to accumulate profit.

> While I do believe what was said above, it seems that whatever choices they are making that supposedly are resulting in a failing company from an engineering perspective, are resulting in a successful company from a financial perspective.

Finances for big brands can be lagging indicators.

kjsbfkjbf··on Ask HN: What VPN service are you currently using?
I'm not sure why Mozilla is still held on such high esteem despite multiple gaffs.
kjsbfkjbf··on Ask HN: What VPN service are you currently using?
I'd definitely be interested in a guide on how to set up a proxy on a free-tier cloud hosting site. Finding that ProtonVPN does not let me watch content I legally pay for if I'm in a different region...
kjsbfkjbf··on Google says Nest’s built-in mic not listed in specs was not meant to be secret
Police departments exist to perpetuate the interests of the state and those in power. They exist to defend private property. I would strongly disagree with your assertion especially in America. :)

Hopefully the planet understands that 25000 people can find other jobs in NYC and still take the subway to work?

Your math is way off.

And even if they could that's more money into Big Tech oligopolies. Not something we really need to be supporting.

I've luckily read HtDP already for school. :)

I'll check out serverracket!

kjsbfkjbf··on State of Clojure Survey 2019 Analysis
Do you have any resources to start with Racket? I did it in first year but I haven't really seen (or searched too hard for!) materials that explain how I'd use it in production.

Thus once again revealing -- to those who believed otherwise -- that the police do not exist to "protect" the citizens.
