kjgkjhfkjf··on Why I code as a CTO
CTO is usually the exec responsible for the entire tech org. The CTO reports to the CEO, and the top managers and maybe a few ICs in the tech org report to the CTO.
kjgkjhfkjf··on GNU Octave Meets JupyterLite: Compute Anywhere, Anytime
Early versions of Andrew Ng's ML MOOC used Octave, if you are looking for examples and exercises.

kjgkjhfkjf··on Le Chat: Custom MCP Connectors, Memories
Why would I want to use Mistral's MCP services instead of official MCP services from Notion, Stripe, etc.? It seems to me that the official MCP services would be strictly better, e.g. because I don't have to grant access to my resources to Mistral.
kjgkjhfkjf··on Sequoia backs Zed
I enjoy the responsiveness of the Zed editor compared to VSCode, but I am concerned that it is a VC backed enterprise.

For example, I don't like that I am forced to look at its "Sign In" UI, and that they have refused attempts to remove it. [0]

Zed has some much more annoying bugs, and I am not excited to help fix them given the position of the code owners.

kjgkjhfkjf··on Code review can be better
If you want to remain relevant in the AI-enabled software engineering future, you MUST get very good at reviewing code that you did not write.

AI can already write very good code. I have led teams of senior+ software engineers for many years. AI can write better code than most of them can at this point.

Educational establishments MUST prioritize teaching code review skills, and other high-level leadership skills.

kjgkjhfkjf··on I'm switching to Python and actually liking it
Nice article, but this command doesn't activate the venv that's managed by uv.

    uv venv activate
The command actually creates a new venv in a dir called "activate". The correct way to activate the venv is like this:

    source .venv/bin/activate
kjgkjhfkjf··on Learn Makefiles
Why would you use make for a C or C++ project when bazel exists?
kjgkjhfkjf··on Octobass
Here's a video of one being played (sort of): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3K3VdVbBOxw
kjgkjhfkjf··on Solving LinkedIn Queens with APL
How are you generating the boards?
kjgkjhfkjf··on Solving LinkedIn Queens with APL
It's not "N-Queens". It's "Star Battle": https://www.puzzle-star-battle.com/.
kjgkjhfkjf··on RubyLLM: A delightful Ruby way to work with AI
What are some similarly ergonomic packages for other languages?
kjgkjhfkjf··on How the Samuel Smith beer baron built Britain's strangest pub chain
Seems like Humphrey Smith cannot handle his beer.
kjgkjhfkjf··on What we know about CEO shooting suspect
I don't think it's particularly relevant that the suspect is a software dev. Many people in the US are software devs nowadays. It has become a completely mainstream career option.
kjgkjhfkjf··on This is a teenager
This website is neat, but please keep in mind that you cannot establish causation from an observational study.
kjgkjhfkjf··on Why Google Zanzibar shines at building authorization
Ironically, by the time Spanner became generally available, Google had largely lost their appetite for launching new products.
kjgkjhfkjf··on Please don’t upload my code on GitHub
Seems like Github should train one LLM per license type. There'd be a GPL LLM that's trained on GPL code, an MIT LLM trained on MIT licensed code, etc. Then Copilot users could select the LLM for a license appropriate for the work they're doing.
kjgkjhfkjf··on Chess, unlike war, is a game of perfect information
In practice, Chess is not a game of perfect information, since you generally don't know which lines your opponent has prepared beforehand.
kjgkjhfkjf··on Employees are feeding sensitive data to ChatGPT, raising security fears
Are we similarly concerned about people posting company secrets on the Korean website/app "Blind" on a daily basis?
kjgkjhfkjf··on We built an exceedingly polite AI dog that answers questions about your APIs
4XX errors typically indicate client issues e.g. requesting a non-existent resource. The AI dog should be more concerned about 5XX errors, which indicate server issues e.g. being unavailable.
kjgkjhfkjf··on Ain't it funny how the knight moves?
The knight move in chess seems a bit strange at first, but it makes sense when you realize that the knight can move to squares that lie on a circle around it.
kjgkjhfkjf··on Show HN: HyperLogLog in Zig
Nice!
kjgkjhfkjf··on Just: A Command Runner
You should avoid flaky tests. They slow down presubmits and make it hard to do bisections.
kjgkjhfkjf··on Just: A Command Runner
Many folks believe that builds and tests should ideally be "hermetic", and not depend on external state. This can make tests more robust, and facilitates tasks such as bisecting to identify the cause of regressions.
kjgkjhfkjf··on Just: A Command Runner
This is actually very different than `make`, since it will always run the tasks even if their inputs haven't changed[0].

It's a bit bizarre to me that their example involves building code, since that application generally benefits from this "idiosyncratic" behavior of `make`.

You probably would want the behavior of `make` for the `test` command too, to avoid running potentially time-consuming tests unnecessarily. Bazel caches test results to avoid this, for example.

kjgkjhfkjf··on Show HN: HyperLogLog in Zig
Is it possible to use a single fn to replace the beta4..beta18 fns[0], so that the polynomial expressions are generated at comptime instead of being hand-written?

kjgkjhfkjf··on Cloud development environments tame complexity by reducing state
Ideally we'd have reliable local developer experiences. An unreliable cloud-based developer experience is certainly worse than an unreliable local developer experience, and IME cloud-based developer experiences tend to be unreliable and extremely tiresome to debug when they break.
kjgkjhfkjf··on I have complicated feelings about TDD
I generally expect to see decent tests along with code in the same PR. I don't care whether the tests were written before or after the code.
kjgkjhfkjf··on A carnivorous plant that traps prey underground
The pitcher mechanism is a miracle of evolution. The plant deploying it below the soil line perhaps not so much.
kjgkjhfkjf··on Webcams aren't good enough
I don't need to see every pore in my coworkers' skin when I meet with them over Zoom. The regular (company issued) MBP camera is fine.
kjgkjhfkjf··on Enough Is Enough: The Criminal Case Against Mark Zuckerberg
I expect that a judge would think differently.
