kissiel··on Update to Git changes the default of init.defaultBranch to main
As a Slav I feel offended by changes like this, mainly because it means that someone saw a word that - in a totally different context - and thought of the bad meaning. What next? s/killall/pleaseturnoff?

I also have a bad feeling about Parus major (the bird).

kissiel··on 2020 Mac Mini – Putting Apple Silicon M1 To The Test
Lol. So that would be a +100% upgrade for fxtentacle.
kissiel··on 2020 Mac Mini – Putting Apple Silicon M1 To The Test
I don't think people are considering replacing a gaming 2kg+ laptop with a fanless macbook. Authors included two popular Turing dGPUs for comparison.

I have a theory on why ST perf is always the most important metric for me, and some other folks. When you're waiting for something synchronously, like rendering a webpage, stuff to open, etc. you're usually running a ST load. For stuff that can benefit from multithreading it's usually planned task. So does it make a difference if it takes 4 minutes compared to 3? You will still context switch.

So a 60W TDP dGPU (gtx 960M) is ~35% faster than this iGPU? I think this is what they called a Rival.
kissiel··on Apple Silicon M1 Emulating x86 Is Still Faster Than Every Other Mac
My guess would be that's the base freq it will go to under full load on a fanless MBA. It's like the "official" 1.1GHz base clock of the i5-1030NG7.

You can see how this is one of the things that changed yearly for the last 5 years. Exactly every year.

I wonder if the people bashing this M1 were bashing intel c2d when it came out.

kissiel··on Facebook account banned after linking Oculus account
I already filed a ticket. I was told that if I followed community guidelines I wouldn’t get banned. Thanks, “Jessica”. Many of the oculus support pages use Facebook, and I’m banned from reaching them, which is pure irony in this case.
kissiel··on Facebook account banned after linking Oculus account
Today my OQ2 arrived. I created an account just for the purpose of pairing the device. I used my real credentials and a gmail email address. I got banned immediately by FB, and cannot init the device. FU FB.
kissiel··on AMD Zen 3/Ryzen 5000 announcement [video]
Probably infamous radeon drivers. Thanks for the hope :D

I got this 4750U in the T14. The CPU performance is great, but the iGPU is terrible when connected to an external 2160p60 screen. Animations for stuff like maximizing window have 2-3fps tops. iGPU from intel in 10510U manages 10+ fps. (5.8 kernel, Gnome 3.36).
kissiel··on Factorio 1.0
I think this game made me a better engineer. I'm not saying it was worth investing hundreds of hours, but it was fun playing. One of very few games I really enjoyed in the last decade.
kissiel··on Year old iPad runs x86_64 in emulation faster than the Surface natively
Not apple to apple because we're still comparing binaries for different architectures. Apple kit is running x86_64 binary and Surface is running an arm binary. The hardware comparison should be done once geekbench is recompiled to armv8.
kissiel··on Year old iPad runs x86_64 in emulation faster than the Surface natively
With translation the cod will be translated before it starts running. With emulation it's more like a VM, where each instruction run is translated to the other archs counterpart. In other words, consider an imaginary program that has one big loop. Let's say it has 100 instructions. With translation you get another program with some instructions of the similar size (same order of magnitude). With emulation you interpret each instruction as it goes, so if your loop has 1B iterations you pay the penalty of emulating (converting on the fly) 1B times (very simplified). So translation is better for performance.
kissiel··on Year old iPad runs x86_64 in emulation faster than the Surface natively
I think the "in emulation" bit uncertain. I think this got AOT translated to armv8. Also not very apples-to-apples comparison.
kissiel··on New iPhone SE
Nope. XS, XSMax, XR, 11 and 11 pros all have that.
kissiel··on AMD’s 7nm Ryzen 4000 laptop processors
For the laptop you linked it says: This item will be released on April 16, 2020. Which considering human malware may be May+
kissiel··on AMD’s 7nm Ryzen 4000 laptop processors
Except they're actually not. I would love to buy one, but there is no one laptop with 4000 series in shops here, in EU.
kissiel··on An open-source collection of interview questions
Yeah, source as in text form, not some binary that your brain compiles those letters into!
kissiel··on AMD Ryzen 3rd Gen 'Matisse' Coming Mid 2019: Eight Core Zen 2 with PCIe 4.0
130W on AMD vs 180W Intel. Nearly 75%.

Also, I'm worried that they're at "engineering sample, glad it didn't crash" stage. Optimistically this will hit shelves at Q3, and at this point we may see sunny-cove-based 10nm (Whole chip, not only the "chiplet") cpu from the blue team.

I think AMD's success will come down to pricing...

kissiel··on Apple lied about iPhone X screen size and pixel count, lawsuit alleges
> iPhone X is supposed to have a resolution of 2436x1125 pixels, but the product doesn't contain true pixels with red, green and blue subpixels in each pixel, according to the complaint. iPhone X allegedly only has two subpixels per pixel

Stating resolution of OLED screens has always been a lie, (akin to CCD/CMOS sensors).

But suing apple for that now, after many years of other manufacturers have done that, seems very lets-sue-apple-like.

kissiel··on Validating UTF-8 bytes using only 0.45 cycles per byte (AVX edition)
Nice. So I understand that AVX2 is not bringing the CPU's clock down.

Got any sources for power consumption figures/comparisons of those AVX units?

kissiel··on Validating UTF-8 bytes using only 0.45 cycles per byte (AVX edition)
I wonder about the Joules per byte. AFAIK AVX units are quite expensive energy-wise.
