kissiel··on Ford's answer to EV supply chain hell: Cheaper batteries
I've used a PHEV with 40km of range on electric. It was 100% enough for doing daily driving. I would love to see a small town-oriented not shitboxy EV that's cheaper than fiat500/mini-e.

12C and 12S - two of my favorite buses!

Are those things really retyped by hand?

kissiel··on Ubuntu Core 22 is now available – optimised for IoT and embedded devices
drivers, as you said, for filesystems for instance, syscalls available that we know and love :), somewhat easier deployment (elf instead of raw bin), other abstractions that linux provides, multiprocessing (if done carefully), real multithreading,
kissiel··on Ubuntu Core 22 is now available – optimised for IoT and embedded devices
Linux? yes. Popular distro? not really. Lack of MMU means that all the processes (and shared objects) use the same memory space, so unless you have some way of randomizing where things go (like SELinux), two processes will step on each other's data (MPU will not trigger segfault, as both are allowed to r/w same addr - IIUC). But even when using randomizing, you're playing russian rulette.
kissiel··on Ubuntu Core 22 is now available – optimised for IoT and embedded devices
Cortex M* lack MMU, which is necessary for any normal linux distro. Cortex M0 and M4 are just beefy microcontrollers.
kissiel··on Overthinking (2021)
I've read "Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers" by Leonard Koren 978-0981484600. It's a bit pretentious, but helped me think about the concept on my own.
kissiel··on Overthinking (2021)
Thing that helped me with avoiding this kind of problem was learning about wabi sabi[0]. A mindset of accepting and finding beauty in imperfection.

kissiel··on Formula E Gen3: The world’s most efficient race car
As with all engineering there's a tradeoffs dance. The F1 one cars pull insane G's in the bends, and all that downforce requires a lot of power. I'd like to know what kind of g-forces those FE cars reach. I think the best way to compare the overall performance is to compare the average speed on the same track.
kissiel··on Formula E Gen3: The world’s most efficient race car
220mph is typical speed on longer straights, so I guess It should have been "F1 cars on average have a top speed between 220 and 230mph.

kissiel··on Apple to Apple Comparison: M1 Max vs. Intel
I'm using vmware fusion to run ubuntu vms for my daily work. The virtualized 20.04 aarch64 is on par with my x64 desktop (5900x from amd). Surprisingly in both, ST and MT loads. The laptop never runs out of juice at the end of the day when I'm on battery. Also there's no perf. penalty for disconnecting the charger.
kissiel··on MacBook Owners' Butterfly Keyboard Lawsuit Gets Class Action Certification
I liked the infamous butterfly keyboard more. I could type much faster on it, and it felt more solid, but almost everyone I know had an issue with them.

Yessir. I remembered the number from the past, and before writing this post I found this https://www.theguardian.com/environment/ng-interactive/2019/...

> having a fossil fuel car for a year does not exceed the emissions of that flight.

That's true (-ish).

Here are the numbers:

Modern pure-ICE cars don't got below 100g/km of CO2. Round trip NYC-LHR yields 1 ton of CO2. So the above comment is true-ish for cars that do less than 10k km annually.

Just a reminder that 256kbit is A LOT when using modern codecs. http://soundexpert.org/encoders-256-kbps

Where is this info form, btw? I'd love to read more specs. BT5 has a 2Mbit throughput for LE.

£91.50 in the UK price is VAT. You get expensive vat on expensive products :)
kissiel··on M1 Macs: Truth and Truthiness
The processor looks at the future instructions it will run, can see that some things can be run ahead of time, and can run multiple multiple instructions in parallel (on the same core). You could run individual multiplications in parallel. Most of those things other ARM processors can do that too, but M1 is bigger in some of those sizes, like how many instructions ahead it looks at, how many things can run at once etc.

kissiel··on Plugin hybrids in new emissions scandal: test show higher pollution than claimed
My PHEV - mini countryman - can go up to 140km/h on pure electric. It even has an option in the car settings where driving on pure electric can be the default setting. Same goes for BMW PHEVs and Porsche ones.
kissiel··on Plugin hybrids in new emissions scandal: test show higher pollution than claimed
You're right. This is why not cars, but fuel - you know, like the source of the carbon - should be controlled/taxed. I also think that any car can be driven in an inefficient manner. The 1.7t PHEV I use has been amazing in terms of fuel economy, but I know people that burn more fuel in their hybrids than in V8 ICE sportcars.
kissiel··on Plugin hybrids in new emissions scandal: test show higher pollution than claimed
Shame they don't write about people like me, which drive on pure electric all the time. ICE kicks in once per month on on longer journeys. So effectively i have +inf times lower emission.
kissiel··on Intel is spreading FUD about supposed Ryzen 4000 performance drops on battery
GNU/Linux. As in my top post - kernel 5.9. Arch's wiki page is close to useless for Zen2. Renoir currently reports comically low `scaling_available_frequencies` - in my case: `1700000 1600000 1400000` even when plugged in.
kissiel··on Intel is spreading FUD about supposed Ryzen 4000 performance drops on battery
I'd appreciate a resource on how to do so.
kissiel··on Intel is spreading FUD about supposed Ryzen 4000 performance drops on battery
My 4750u (in T14 thinkpad) doesn't go to 4GHz clock in the first 10s of load when on battery. After 10s it jumps to 4GHz+. Which means that for my bursty workloads like running unit tests in python, linters, etc. I get 60% of performance. To circumvent that I often use external powerbank just to make it 'plugged in'. Running kernel 5.9 btw. Annoying AF.
kissiel··on HomePod has been jailbroken with checkra1n
It looks like it's available in countries that have support for apple's speech to text: https://www.apple.com/ios/feature-availability/#siri-neural-...

Kinda sucks. Here in Poland there's no siri in polish. I'd wish apple would give users an option to mark "yeah, I can handle english, sell me the damn device". Same with upcoming fitness service.

kissiel··on HomePod has been jailbroken with checkra1n
They would need a time machine too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HomePod

I wonder if jailbroken homepod would still do the audio enhancements on the fly with, let's say, spotify. Or the detection of commands in google assistant even while playing music very loud.

I started reading this paper and found this important bits:

This is the period where almost all of Europe saw a decline in daily-new-cases, mainly due to people starting to take this thing seriously.

And still, the study has shown that masked worked:

> The primary outcome occurred in 42 participants (1.8%) in the mask group and 53 (2.1%) in the control group.
