PoW is the cheapest way to have secure transactions compared to alternatives. It's not energy wasted - this energy ensures the safety of the global financial system, which is a net positive.

kirillseva··on Ask HN: Who hires mathematicians?
Data engineering and data science teams at Avant are biased towards hiring pure math graduates. I think it's because training in mathematics necessarily teaches you to jump up and down between different layers of abstraction which makes motivated mathematicians very quick and effective learners.

If you don't mind relocating to Chicago drop me a line at kirill.sevastyanenko (at) avant

kirillseva··on AWS Fargate – Run Containers Without Managing Infrastructure
My org is looking to move machine learning to batch as the underlying infra.

All I want is to be able to do this: 1) specify a DAG of tasks. Each task is a docker image, CMD string, CPU and memory limits 2) hit an API to run it for me. Each task runs on a new spot instance 3) be able to query this service about the state of the DAG and of each individual node

Sounds like if AWS provides an API to create a batch cluster (or whatever you call it) and lets the tasks be defined in terms of what docker image to run with what command you'll satisfy this desire

Depends on what you do. If you're starting a new project picking Theano indeed isn't a very good choice due to the reasons you've mentioned. However, if you already have a stable piece of software that does what you want it to do then migration won't add much value and you could spend this time doing something more important, like improving documentation or having dinner with your family and friends.

However it's worth pointing out that theano's API is somewhat similar to tensorflow so migrating shouldn't be too hard and should be fairly easy to test

kirillseva··on Initial Coin Offerings Horrify a Former S.E.C. Regulator
> Why do we allow people to spend 2M$ on a Car or 6k$ on a bag?

Soviet Union famously regulated this very well. These luxury goods were only available to accredited investors aka the Party elite.

It seems to me that back then this behavior was condemned by the people of the Land of the Free.

automated high frequency trading also does the important work of eliminating the question "Which exchange should I buy AAPL at?"

HFT is mostly ultra-fast arbitrage programs, and the benefit of using them far outweighs the downsides.

Maybe the problem is not with HFT but in the industry as a whole

kirillseva··on Ask HN: If you could automate anything, what would you automate?
That's kind of easy to do these days. If you add one more requirement, "and doesn't spy on you" - the task becomes impossible
kirillseva··on Ask HN: If you could automate anything, what would you automate?
I'd automate automating things (aka strong AI)

This is a fairly well represented technique in bayesian hyperparameter optimization, where you train a meta-classifier that keeps track of the parameter space. Kind of like a manager model, if you will, that learns to intelligently optimize exploration vs exploitation so that a team of workers will arrive at the global optimum.

Back when Yahoo! was a real company they used a technique called "multi-armed bandits" to learn what ads to show. [1]

More recently, there's a number of off-the-shelf packages available that you can trivially integrate into your ML pipeline to optimize hyperparameters of your models, I'll include the links below.

kirillseva··on Theano and the Future of PyMC
Another lesson about the dangers of relying on a separate team to maintain core part of your software. Not that using dependencies is a bad thing, but one should still be aware of what tradeoff they are making.

In terms of a new backend, there's uber's pyro [1] that's based on pytorch, and then there's Edward [2] that's based on tensorflow (and I think recently got integrated into tensorflow repo). Would be interesting to see pyMC adopt MXNet as its backend. I'm sure Amazon will become a heavy user and might sponsor the development. Or at least the authors will be able to get jobs there without a whiteboarding interview phase.

kirillseva··on Using Vue.js and Rails
they look pretty similar to me, one is kinda like js-in-html, the other is html-in-js, to each their own.

I'm talking more about the whole experience of building out a full app. How do I structure my codebase? Which packages should I use in 2017? It's a much more trivial exercise with vue if you're only doing frontend work occasionally and not as part of your normal job.

I have to point out that https://github.com/facebookincubator/create-react-app is great if you do decide to go with React and want answers to aforementioned questions.

kirillseva··on Using Vue.js and Rails
To me vue is like react but with

> simpler syntax. I think single-file components is a great thing when you're getting started. While true "js ninjas" will call me out on this, they're probably employed by a large org with problems that are different from mine.

> less choice. I only write frontend occasionally. How would I know which react-router to choose? What's the best redux package? What about handling CSS, what's the flavor du jour? Vue says "want something done - do this. here's vue router, vuex, etc."

Overall, the two are very much similar in both how they work and what they provide, but one is developed and used by an organization that has a virtually infinite supply of engineers, and the other is being developed by one guy.

Technology that makes Facebook successful may be inappropriate for a successful hackathon or a small startup

kirillseva··on Using Vue.js and Rails
There pretty much aren't that many new problems to solve that RoR ecosystem hasn't solved already, hence hard to generate hype. RoR developers are busy building things and don't spend much time on forums anyway.

And those that do, they are on forums to learn about new exciting shiny frameworks/languages, like Elixir

kirillseva··on Bitcoin Cash has Surpassed Bitcoin in global hashrate [Nov 13 2017]
that's because it's more profitable to mine BCH now before the difficulty adjustment kicks in. Didn't they recently hard fork to relax the difficulty adjustment rules so this exact situation could happen?

Alternatively Bitmain has just plugged in a new batch of their ASICBoost

kirillseva··on Julia: A Modern Language for Modern ML [video]
as usual, if you think it's fun/interesting and something you'd like to do more in the future - go for it, there's more resources now than ever.

kirillseva··on TensorForce 0.3: End-to-end computation graphs for reinforcement learning
Best of luck to you in monetizing your efforts, hope this good publicity will help your cause. Thank you very much for opensourcing reference implementations of state-of-the art reinforcement learning algorithms.

One thing that would make playing with this tech more interesting to me and other newcomers is a guide on how to create a new environment for gym or universe, sort of a crash course on what steps need to be made in order to apply your algorithms to my existing problems

I prefer the syntax of STAN or edwardlib. Curious why Uber would choose to work on a PPL library in-house as opposed to contributing to existing mature OSS packages
