Having toll lanes don't help with anything. Look at what the 10 freeway don't rush hour. Equally clogged. No form of public transit is going to help with the traffic, it's only going to give people an alternative to avoid traffic.
The problem lies in just bad freeway design. If you look at the 405 North at the 10 intersection. You're going from 6 lanes to 4 and then adding long merging lanes as Santa Monica, Wilshire, and Sunset come up.
Now let's look at the 10 freeway Eastbound past downtown. The freeway immediately splits in 4 with traffic merging into the center. An on ramp in the center of a freeway!? Unless the entire intersection is completely rebuilt traffic will never be fixed because the bottleneck is unavoidable.
Legible is subjective. I personally find the font and spacing quite difficult to read actually. Conceptually reminds me of an old writing platform I used to use called QuietWrite. Loved it while it lasted.
The Safari API is severely lacking relative to Chrome/Firefox. It would be great if Apple would spend some time getting Safari up to parity so devs can create a more consistent user experience for their browser.

On top of not opening up the ecosystem so that it can expand it's crazy how some companies don't even support eSports. Take for example Nintendo and how they handled EVO last year. They wanted to promote Sm4sh and so they tried to ban streaming of the Melee tournament.
Kind of a tangent point but I really wonder how our society intends to solve the problem of automation replacing high paying skilled workers. Is education and relocation the only answer?
3DTV has always been too much work for the consumer. You have to pay the big ticket price of getting a 3DTV. Then you've got to get a pair of glasses for each viewer. What if you're one pair short? Plans ruined? Then you've got to get the 3D version of the movie. What movies do you even consider watching in 3D? Personally, I can only think of Avatar, Gravity, and maybe Dr. Strange.
Investors are giving Uber a near infinite bankroll so it's hard to say that they'll be allowed to fail.
I was in Southeast Asia recently and it's insane how cheap Uber is. It almost doesn't make sense to take any other form of transportation. I imagine once the competition dies, they'll have complete control over the market.
Yeah, personally I would be really upset if my fellow shareholders voted for a poor direction for the company. So, if the vision and direction of a company's leaders continue to do well for the company, I'd totally be on board investing. I wouldn't have to worry about the public eye being reactionary to any speed bumps.
I think it would be valuable to you to give HN a little more insight to your particular set of skills and your purpose.
I say this because I personally have dived head first into using a CSS framework without first fully understanding a few key CSS fundamentals. This made front-end work very hacky and involved a lot of trial and error.
Further along the line I've also been burned once or twice by adopting a CSS framework, only to have breaking changes from future updates.
So really it depends on your situation, whatever it may be.
Twitter comparisons aside (what's the point?), anyone know what could be causing the surge in pricing for Bitcoin? It was off my radar for a while and all of a sudden it's at $800+.
Everyone has something that works really well for them. It's nice to have an employer that respects that.
Personally, I find a lot of value in putting a face on everyone in my team. To me, it's a lot easier to work through a problem in person vs. over Slack or Skype.
But that's not to say I disagree with the OP. I totally value the efficiency of working in isolation if and when I'm at a point where I just need to be heads down to finish a task. At my office, we have the luxury of isolated couch rooms where it feels like working from home w/ the office and your coworkers steps away.
I don't see it happening any time soon if at all. Companies spend an insane amount of money advertising on Facebook platforms. If you're at all familiar with how companies buy ads in digital marketing, you'll realize how Facebook's targeting is super valuable and companies pay a pretty penny to target specific users.
Not to mention, Facebook is quite the pioneer in tech. React is one of the most used front end libraries and the community around it is super positive.
Then there's VR and their progress in 360 video. The list really goes on with Facebook.
So Tesla is doing this thing where they're running in the background and logging data of decisions that they would make vs. what actually happens.
I'm wondering if Uber did the same thing at all. Because at the moment, it sure doesn't feel like it. Anecdotally I've heard many stories from friends in the area encounter autonomous Ubers committing traffic violations like running red lights.
I disagree. For the form factor this is the perfect game. If you wanted to play a Mario game on a portable device, you can invest in a 3DS. But for mobile games, these controls are perfect and tight. I've played dozens of games on my iPhone w/ a digital joystick and I am very happy w/ their decision to go with a tap control.
Now that your sarcasm has ended, if you give it a shot, it actually plays just like any of the DS versions but w/ auto run. It's definitely much more than just a runner. The level design is very polished too.
It's not just a runner game though. I think calling it Super Mario "Run" gives it the stigma of other run games that copy Temple Run. But, it's more akin to Rayman.
It's always been bad. Navigating through all of their hardware menus is such a pain. Compare downloading games and updates on a Wii U or 3DS vs. a PS4. It's like navigating an ATM machine. But I tolerate it 'cause their games are always so damn charming.
Have you dropped the $9.99 yet? I actually felt rewarded by the ramp up in difficulty. If you've only gone through the 1st 3 levels, you've only just played the demo. Have you tried collecting up to the black coins?
While my first order was close to a year ago, what I have to say about this and all the other food delivery services (Postmates, UberEats, Grubhub) is that I typically have a hard time meeting delivery minimums or straight up find the delivery fee too expensive to justify an order.
So far, I've only ever used Amazon when I have a coupon. It would be cool if I could accumulate Amazon restaurant credit as an option when I choose No Rush Shipping or have some form of loyalty/rewards system. Else, I'm just going to choose whatever is cheapest, even if slightly less convenient. And that's just me. Other users' loyalty could be even more elusive I'm sure.
It depends. If you're just starting out, it could make sense to move to the Bay Area to work for a big name company that will teach you a lot and make you look better on paper. You'll even get a higher salary to use as slight leverage when you decide to work in a different city. Yes, rent in the bay is expensive. But, at least a lot of things will cost the same. An Apple product will cost the same whether you live in the midwest or the bay. A vacation will also cost the same no matter where you live. Just a different perspective of looking at this argument.
The website is pretty explicit about it being just self-driving "technology". I wonder if they just plan to work w/ one manufacturer for now or if they're in talks w/ many. With so much competition, if they're all executed to the same standards of safety, my wallet is going to go w/ better design & aesthetics.
This isn't VR specific. I can get lost and immersed in any story regardless of the medium and be saddened afterwards. But, I will say that VR is one of the most immersive experiences out there. With the right game/universe, I can totally see people having withdrawal issues.
As a fellow software developer, you do bring up a good point and I agree with you, but I think he's referring to more blue collar jobs. We have white collar jobs and are pretty well off. You have a job and own a home which is far more than what it sounds like the rust belt that voted for Trump has.
I still don't get it after reading the article. Although to be honest, I don't want a 5 year old explanation. I want a technical breakdown of how blockchain technology works without any mention of bitcoin or currency or mining. I feel like Bitcoins really cloud my understanding of it and narrows it down to a subset of its use cases. Really I want to understand better how it can be used as a distributed P2P database of transactions and how exactly it has security and history built in. Anyone have resources? Everything I find seems to have only fin-tech in mind.
Appreciate the article, but this is relatively dated information. While I can see that many enjoyed the article, many have also been working in ES6 for over a year now. If you're ready to join, I highly suggest everyone make their way to https://babeljs.io/ and everything it has to offer resource-wise or tooling-wise.
