kimmel··on DuckDuckGo Architecture - 1 Million Deep Searches a Day and Growing
Good god, the comments in this thread really show how douchy the HN community can be.

Tons of anecdotal stories with no evidence. Obvious outsiders trying to image what it is like on the inside (all the guesses about how DDG works) and of course no facts to back anything up.

I would say this pandering and uninformed behaviour is not common on HN, but it is.

People who engage in language flame wars simply do not understand that when you become a good programmer languages do not matter only the platforms matter.

kimmel··on What It's Like To Be Ridiculed For Open Sourcing A Project
No. The hot button topic right now in open source is "increasing diversity" which means more attention is being focused on this.
kimmel··on MIT Aaron Swartz report to be released “in a few weeks”
I am ready for the white washed report saying MIT did everything right. Since MIT is made up of humans and humans are perfect.
kimmel··on RubyJS: A JavaScript standard library based on the Ruby core-lib
A thousand times this. Javascript as a modern language for non-web things is not mature at all. The amount of date/time, string, and hash utility functions that JS simply does not have is staggering.
kimmel··on Youth expelled from Montreal college after finding security flaw
I would like to point out that open source projects love, absolutely LOVE when you report security bugs to them. Many projects have procedures and special mailing lists to get a hold of the correct people in a prompt manner.

To me this stinks of the "closed mind" problem.

kimmel··on A Brainfuck CPU in FPGA
Every time someone implements something new in Brainfuck it makes me smile.

Where is your god now, high level language snobs? ;)

kimmel··on Dear Open Source Project Leader: Quit Being A Jerk
"Time is valuable."

In that vein I would look to point out this handy reference: http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html which goes into depth about why certain reactions happen.

"What we are, unapologetically, is hostile to people who seem to be unwilling to think or to do their own homework before asking questions. People like that are time sinks — they take without giving back, and they waste time we could have spent on another question more interesting and another person more worthy of an answer."

Note: We are upset that people do not think for themselves and feel that they have to be spoon fed because they are special.

kimmel··on GIMP Seeks Crowd-funding Model For GEGL Components
Why should we fund a project that has repeatedly ignore its own community? Why fund a project that has numerous Google SoC projects not merged in? That is wasting donated time and money.
kimmel··on 10 reasons not to use Ruby
Python is by design a one way to do things language whereas Perl is There is more than one way to do things.

'There should be one-- and preferably only one --obvious way to do it.' from http://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0020/ a sentiment that is re-enforced by the python community and even used to pitch python as an easier language since there is only one (right) way.

kimmel··on Windows 8 — Disappointing Usability for Both Novice and Power Users
I'm no UEX expert..

Then let me enlighten you. Your ctrl-alt-delete example is poor due to the fact and this is backed up by a Bill Gates interview that that command was meant for debugging and was not supposed to ship in the final product. People started using it and they had to leave it in.

Some music players do not use space for pause/resume.

As for clicking and zooming, these things are so intuitive that children can learn on their own how to do these simple tasks. OLPC and other organizations air drop laptops into Africa and people who have never a seen a computer get them and teach themselves how to use it and how to read.

kimmel··on German council ditching OpenOffice to go back to Microsoft
And your anecdotal account of OpenOffice vs MS Office is supposed to mean something to the rest of us?

It is one persons opinion, are you a recognized authority in usability of desktop applications? Can you provide non-biased large scale research studies with clear and concise points of why MS's solution is better?

Here is my counter point. I have been using office suites since 'Display Write 4' for MS-DOS in the 80s. I have taught classes on advanced document production using open source software. I have converted hundreds of users to Linux and the only complaints I get about office suites are why are MS formats so incompatible with everything else.

kimmel··on Why Linus Torvalds would rather code than make money
A good chunk of this article is just rehashing the same history every interview does. What a waste.
kimmel··on Twitter, Deal with it.
I actually feel stupider after reading this article. The author is missing the point but hey that is techcrunch for you.
kimmel··on VLC Core is LGPL
VLC has always lagged behind in proper x264 decoding. For most of the 1.x and the first few versions of the 2.x series I had dozens of video files with visual artifacts whilst the newest versions of mplayer at the time did not.

I maintain this kind of test suite since I do video production using open source software and I have to make sure it works in all the major video players.

VLC is useful and important but it is no where near perfect.

kimmel··on Whatever It Takes: Visualizations in E-mail with d3.js
I know I cannot be the only person who sees this and thinks text only emails are still the way to go. If you are going to generate something like this maybe you should just make it a pdf and attach it to the email. HTML emails are still a bad idea.
kimmel··on Program above and beyond your actual ability by using FreeMind
I have been using freeplane for 3 years now to map out software projects. The visuals you can produce really help others understand complex software systems. I selected freeplane over freemind and vym after those two out and finding them lacking features.
kimmel··on What do you do with the Brilliant Jerk?
Here is an accurate tl;dr of this article:

"I am too stupid to manage employees smarter than me so I label them and get rid of them. I am always correct and everyone else is wrong and this has nothing to do with me being the boss."

Also that line about Gates and Jobs is just there so the author can try and draw a parallel to them and thus inflate their position and validate their actions.

kimmel··on Torque 3D to be Released on Github under the MIT license
<a href="http://www.ogre3d.org/>OGRE 3D</a> a MIT licensed game engine that has been around since 2001. I think some of the games in the OGRE gallery are far superior to most Torque engine games.
kimmel··on Firefox 15 arrives, supports compressed textures for impressive 3D gaming
Yes Tree Style Tab is a must. Chrome and Chromium do not offer vertical tab support on Linux.
kimmel··on HTML5 & CSS3 Fundamentals: Development for Absolute Beginners | Channel 9
No mention of polyfills for IE8 and below. Ha. It should read 'HTML5 & CSS3 Fundamentals: This shit don't work in IE6-8 without polyfills'
kimmel··on Unified Dropdown Menu: One Menu to Rule All Links
> Further, a menu with a responsive design, such as the following, negates the need to abandon anything:

I ran some tests on this menu. It fails on android 2.3.x and 4.x. Also does it really need JS to function properly. No it doesn't, CSS already has all the features needed.

kimmel··on Ask HN: Time to give up on Qt?
> Something else? GTK+ still doesn't look very native on Windows or OS X, so for many cross-platform apps it's not a viable option.

GTK+ can look just like Windows XP, Windows 7, Mac OS X. It has themeing capability.

kimmel··on Microsoft’s Downfall: Inside the Cannibalistic Culture That Felled a Tech Giant
Star Trek had slide to unlock before Apple even made a phone. Star Trek PAD versus the iPad... hmmm
kimmel··on C'mon Craiglist, Launch an API Already
There are no pros for craigslist having an API. This is a for-profit company that has chosen not to be greedy bastards. If they wanted they could have an advertisement on every single page of the site but they don't. Craigslist is cost free to almost all users, is fast, and has little down time.

Here are some of the reasons why offering an API is not a good fit for them.

* Craigslist does not need users driven to it which is a side effect of having an API. They are already large and in charge.

* Unless they charge for the API it is a waste of CPU cycles and eventually technical support from an actual person to support this. It is a cost sink.

* Craigslist does not sell anything directly like ebay or amazon. Ebay and Amazon have apis to drive traffic to them. Then a user sells something on the service and ebay/amazon get a cut, that is how their services work, not craigslist.

* "if people care so much about craigslist features, then just build something and offer them the code for free." This was a comment from another user and it makes a great point. Like the engineer who stayed on at Apple to finish his project, something like that could happen to make craigslist better. Has anyone bothered to try and lets see the code?

* craigslist has not shown any intention to move into other markets besides online ads. A publicly facing API would allow others to develop new services and allow craigslist to buy them. This has not happened.

* No major corporation came along and helped craigslist why should they help you? In fact craigslist fought against entrenched newspapers across the globe to create their user base. To sum this point up "There is no such thing as a Free lunch".

I am sure I am forgetting a few other good reasons why they are not offering an API. To me it comes down to a bunch of people bitching about how they built a service on top of data they did not own or control and when it was taken away they act shocked. To me that is just plain business idiocy. If you start a business one of the first things you do is secure your supply chain, in this case the apartment listing data.

kimmel··on The Recruiter Honeypot
> I am also deeply offended by your use of the term "slave". Nobody has used this term.

When I read slave I immediately jumped to 'Wage Slavery' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wage_slavery and it happens all the time. People cannot leave their job or risk looking for a new one because they are living pay check to pay check.

That is what I took away from that statement.

kimmel··on Save Padmapper: Craigslist is wrong to shut them down. An open letter to Craig
I just tried padmapper out and I am not impressed.

The responsiveness of the site is sluggish and the longer I wait for that page load the less time I am saving.

The listings on there now are junk. Recycled listings from aparatmentfinder, really is that all you got. When I search property on craigslist for my town and a price range I get hundreds more listings than padmapper.

Right there are two major problems with padmapper.

kimmel··on LinkedIn class action lawsuit over passwords
I am happy to see this happen. For years computer companies just skate by with no punishment for security breaches. It is time to pay up.
kimmel··on The new Git-scm.com
As others have already said 'I miss the tree eating blob' and the site had character.

The new version obviously had the corporate types in mind. It is clean and optimized to sell it to the pointy haired boss. At first I thought some company had bought and changed the website. Then I realized it is just a cookie cutter template where almost any generic computer program could be plugged in. Then there is the grey color scheme, I see enough websites everyday that have grey color schemes, it is generic and boring. The color scheme before was different and that was a good thing. This constant conformity to sell the corporate and enterprise users on software stinks.

Someone going to censor the man pages because it has phrases like this: 'git - the stupid content tracker'?

kimmel··on Seriously.js: A Realtime, Node-Based Video Compositor for the Web
