(I never remember to update this, so whatever I put here aside from Twitter and Keybase will be outdated very quickly.)

kibibyte··on Gmail was down
Down for me from Philadelphia (via university network) as well.
kibibyte··on Seattle Mayor: I have Comcast, and I would like better service
In general, corporations do that more or less to hedge their bets. They want the candidate that they support to win, but if the other candidate wins, they will be able to settle with at least some influence on that other candidate through that funding.
kibibyte··on False detection on file tcpip.sys
Huh...I never knew that. I wonder why the APIs were designed this way; there has to be legitimate uses for this, right?
kibibyte··on False detection on file tcpip.sys
Dumb question: since modern CPUs and operating systems support virtual memory, shouldn't it be impossible for processes to access memory of other processes, since processes no longer have to deal with shared memory?

...unless you're alluding to security exploits that manage to subvert that mechanism.

kibibyte··on Node.js security advisories
There actually does exist one for Ruby. Check out gemcanary https://gemcanary.com/
kibibyte··on Watch a Nearby Nova Explosion With Your Own Eyes Tonight
At around the latitude of San Francisco (northern hemisphere), you should be able to find Sagitta/Delphinus almost directly overhead at around 10 PM. At around maybe 5 AM, both constellations will set due west.
kibibyte··on Web server in one line of bash
For me, it doesn't even respond to ^C (or even ^\). I had to ^Z it, and then `kill %1`.

Could be an OS-dependent thing. I'm using OS X.

kibibyte··on NASA Selects 2013 Astronaut Candidate Class
I'm going to hazard a guess and say that military people tend to be much better physically prepared than anyone else for the forces they will experience during space missions.
kibibyte··on Digg Reader Rollout
Shouldn't be the former. I just signed up literally within the past 5 minutes. Well, unless you got really unlucky...
kibibyte··on Your oldest, most outdated device
I still have my 128 MB thumb drive. It still works. At the price that I (okay, not me, but my parents) paid for it back then in 7th grade, I can get a USB 3.0 32 GB one today.
kibibyte··on How deep are your unit tests?
That's what I thought until my first summer internship at a Rails shop. Our unit test suite could take a very long time to run (on my Macbook Air dev machine, it would take 15-20 minutes to run). The slowdown came from testing ActiveRecord models with many dependencies, and that we were creating sample models. As a result, our tests hit the test database multiple times, which made them slow down.

Our solution was to start mocking as many models as we could, which really did improve test runtime.

(Slight edit: after reading the other replies, now I really understand what integration tests are for.)

kibibyte··on IntelliJ IDEA 12 Released
I had issues with updating Eclipse itself. The last time I used Eclipse was when I updated the main IDE itself. The update somehow broke my plugins (including Google's ADT) so badly that I had to remove Eclipse and reinstall it and the plugins from scratch. I decided to move on to IntelliJ after that, and I have not had any update issues since then.

This was back in the Eclipse 3.5-3.7 days, but with 4.x already out, it's possible that this issue has already been fixed.

kibibyte··on Hacker News supports browsing with a points threshold
It links back to your main homepage that has been filtered to the articles above a certain points threshold.
kibibyte··on Show HN: See Kickstarter successes and failures
But how would you define "success"? For example, let's say that Ouya delivers the consoles to those who funded the project, but after a year or two, it dies out from lack of developer interest. Would you define that as a "success" because it delivered, or would you call it a "failure" because it died out?

For Kickstarter projects, I think it's better we use more precise terms, like "successfully funded", rather than the vague "successful".

kibibyte··on Lay off W3Schools
I highly recommend http://dochub.io/ over w3schools. Not only does it source MDN, which is much more accurate, but it allows you to instantly search for whatever CSS property or JS function/object you're looking for. (The only thing that I find disadvantageous is that you have to know the name of what you're looking for)
kibibyte··on Ubuntu is coming back to Dell Laptops
While it's not possible to get the computer without the OS installed, you're allowed to decline the Windows license and get a refund from Dell. http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1073

Of course, it's not as convenient as the ideal circumstance of not having Windows installed by default, but it's the next best alternative nonetheless.

kibibyte··on Nexus 7, Made for Google Play
Anyone else also get user-agent related errors on that site with Chrome? For those that did, anyone know why it's happening?
kibibyte··on Why is Haskell used so little in the industry?
Agile isn't right for all software projects. For example, mission critical applications, like medical devices, shouldn't be developed with an agile methodology. Agile is better suited for projects that can be easily and appropriately prototyped.
kibibyte··on Your Bash Prompt Needs This
This has a side-effect that I don't like. Python's virtualenv, once activated, places the string '(venv)' (assuming you named it 'venv') immediately before your prompt to let you know that it is active in this terminal. However, this export hides this modification, and it makes it difficult for me tell whether the venv is active or not.
kibibyte··on Negotiating a Job Offer with a Company
I'm looking for 3-month internships currently. I suppose that it wouldn't be advisable in this case, would it?
kibibyte··on Negotiating a Job Offer with a Company
I have seen a lot of posts and advice like this about increasing your starting salary by negotiating with your recruiter. However, I am a college student looking for an internship. How much of a negotiating position would I have? Is it even advisable for me to try negotiating, considering that I'm only a college intern?
kibibyte··on Show HN: Classes for javascript that you'd actually use
What are the differences between this and something like MooTools? What benefits does P.js offer?

(Note: I was only introduced to MooTools today, so I have limited knowledge about it.)
