khc··on Closing web browser windows doesn't close connections
Isn't this because Mac keeps the app open even after all the windows are closed?
khc··on Brave Complies With Apple iOS Guidelines
the content you consume also has a cost

we are talking about security, and you brought up... MD5?
khc··on Why Is This Website Port Scanning Me?
This would prevent most users from visiting that site (since most of the time it will resolve to 127.0.0.1)
khc··on Python performance: it’s not just the interpreter
then it will become perl6 which no one uses
khc··on Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage Now Has S3 Compatible APIs
cloudflare is not charging different amount for different storage providers, some storage providers are waiving the fee when the upstream is cloudflare.

disclaimer: ex-cloudflare

khc··on Customers say Getaround has been slow to pay repair bills

often time meetings are recorded so they can be played back later for people who didn't attend the meeting.
khc··on Don't write documentation in Markdown
that's exactly what causes the viewing diff problem that I was replying to
khc··on Don't write documentation in Markdown
except when you add one word and re-flow the entire paragraph
khc··on In praise of S3
and then you have GCS implementing their own version of multi-part upload API...

A thing I wish they have is a way to get a consistent view of the object (similar to X-Newest in swift). Charge it 10x or something. Sometimes you really need this.

khc··on In praise of S3
https://github.com/kahing/goofys/ can detect public bucket automatically and not require prior setup. https://cloud.google.com/storage/docs/gsutil works as well (despite it's from google it works fine with s3) iirc
khc··on Sensor Tower owns ad blocker and VPN apps that collect user data
You still need to trust the on device proxy
khc··on Cloud Storage for $2 per TB per month
S3 max single object size is 5TB. The 5GB limit is for single part upload API. You can use the multi-part API to upload single object in multiple parts.
khc··on The case for limiting your browser extensions
Currently extensions either request access for a hardcoded list of websites, or it can request access for all websites. I really want the ability to install an extension for a particular website of _my_ choosing.
khc··on Loading NumPy arrays from disk: mmap() vs. Zarr/HDF5
> 1. FUSE filesystems. This means sending really slow queries to S3, and so you're much better off using compression to get better performance.

As author of https://github.com/kahing/goofys/ I respectfully disagree :-)

khc··on Show HN: Querying JSON documents using SQL-like language in Scala
Not many people know this but Databricks offers https://community.cloud.databricks.com/ for free which allows you to run simple spark notebooks.

Disclosure: works for Databricks but not on spark

khc··on We use Kubernetes and spot instances to reduce EC2 billing up to 80%
It's the default but you can change it. Most people will appreciate the cost savings
khc··on We use Kubernetes and spot instances to reduce EC2 billing up to 80%
This is pretty common, databricks for example uses regular instances for the driver and spot instances for workers by default.
khc··on Bloomberg bankrolls a social-media army
Donald Trump spent less money on the election than Hillary Clinton maybe a counter example that people don't like
khc··on Multi-account containers add-on sync feature
Really cool! I wish I could sync per-container though. I have a "personal" container at work for personal things, and have configured some websites to always open in the "personal" container. Syncing that with my personal laptop seems not very useful (and would actually be annoying)
khc··on The Rapid Growth of Io_uring
iirc it wasn't created for network IO, but I could be wrong
khc··on The Rapid Growth of Io_uring
epoll doesn't allow you to do async io to local storage, and io_uring doesn't target the network use case, so they are not quite comparable.
khc··on Buffer overflow when pwfeedback is set in sudoers
most of the JIT bugs were probably due to generating unsafe code instead of generating from unsafe code. Rewriting a new JIT will probably increase the number of zero days.
khc··on Is a supermarket discount coupon worth giving away your privacy?
The rich and privileged never stops trying to take freedom away from the ignorant poor.
khc··on Jeff Bezos's phone 'hacked by Saudi crown prince'
do you mean 18 months before?
khc··on GNU Guile 3.0
The objection seems to be that guile supports more than just elisp. Surely if emacs switch to guile it can disable other languages?
