kevinmershon··on XTDB 2.x Early Access
We use XTDB 1 and have a multi replica production instance with about 600GB of data at ~100 million transactions. The biggest problem we have is with minor versions bumping the underlying RocksDB i dex version, requiring a full reindex of the main "golden" data store taking days to weeks.

AFAIK this is not solved in XTDB 1. I'm hoping XTDB 2 provides a better upgrade path for modestly sized databases like ours.

kevinmershon··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (January 2023)
Location: San Jose, CA

Remote: Yes, preferred

Willing to relocate: no

Technologies: Clojure and cljs primarily

Resume: https://github.com/kevinmershon/resume

Email: kevin (at sign)) mershonenterprises [[dot goes here}} com

I am a senior software engineer with 19+ years experience, across a multitude of industries, languages, stacks. I immensely prefer working with Clojure and have been for the last 8+ years. I have management experience and even owned my own consultancy for 5 years.

Over the last 6 years I built my own algotrading platform, and livestreamed a lot of its development on Twitch.tv. I have over 100 hours of me live coding on VODs that you can watch. Yes, my bot is profitable.

As a consequence of the aforementioned bot, I'm comfy where I'm at currently and after 2 years that's starting to eat at me. The company I'm at is not fully utilizing my skill set, I'm paid in the bottom 25th percentile for my experience level, and I'm worried I'll start to rot if I stay here too much longer.

I'd love to work in the sex-tech industry, or help fight climate change or homelessness. Wouldn't that be nice?

kevinmershon··on Ask HN: What to focus on for proving I am a competent programmer?
*should be
kevinmershon··on Ask HN: What to focus on for proving I am a competent programmer?
One of the best and simplest ways to prove you're a competent programmer would be to just live stream yourself coding on twitch or YouTube. Both sites let you record and edit previous streams down to highlights you can organize into categories (e.g. database work vs frontend work).

Live streaming is also great practice for interviews as well, because you shout be narrating your train of thought and explaining pros and cons of your solution as you work on it, for both.

I did exactly this before acquiring my current job, and my boss thanked me for sharing the content and said that was the best possible interview process he could conceive of.

kevinmershon··on Americans do not want to return to urban living
Yeah, exactly. This article and its survey questions seem to completely skip over the _why_ of wanting to move out of cities. And the big reason of course is that it became unaffordable for most people and isn't getting better.
kevinmershon··on RIP Stack Overflow Jobs
I see you guys don't list Clojure under tech stack, which is a bit absurd as it's consistently one of the highest paying and highest job satisfaction languages year after year in software engineer surveys.

kevinmershon··on Amazon Sidewalk: A New Way to Stay Connected
If this type of offline/online bridging technology was instead applied to industrial facilities, oilfield and construction service areas, and forestry (early wildfire and invasive beetle detection) it would be a hell of a lot more beneficial to humanity than whatever this crap is going to end up being.
kevinmershon··on Cortex: Deploy machine learning models in production
Unfortunately, a somewhat popular Clojure library for machine learning on GitHub is also called Cortex, because this is going to make discussing machine learning APIs in the context of Clojure that much more confusing.

Software developer for 15 years, worked in shipping software for a startup, oil & gas distributed data collection (SCADA), owned my own web development shop for 5 years with 10 employees at peak, spent the last 2.5 in the ERP world doing NetSuite and Salesforce integrations. I've already got 5-6 years production-level Clojure under my belt, want to get back into it and away from enterprise consulting. Internal tools/architecture is where I want to be.
