kevindication··on "You've angered the hive"
We used to do this when managing unreachable firewalls. Dial out to the modem attached to the firewall console and type in that modem's password. The remote modem drops our call, then dials us back with a console login prompt. So even if you had the password, you had to at least be dialing in from our phone line.

kevindication··on Ask HN: Who's Hiring? (February 2011 Edition)
Looks like we've got quite a few positions open: http://www.woti.com/jobs.cfm

Feel free to ping me if you want to know if you're likely to be a good fit.

kevindication··on Craigslist Adult Services Shut Down Worldwide
It's puzzling to this American as well. I too see these things as deeply un-American.

What's worse is that, as other commenters are mentioning, this makes it more difficult to track human traffickers.

kevindication··on Android Developers Blog: It’s not “rooting”, it’s openness
It was perhaps a little ambitious for Google to expect to sell more Nexus Ones (with easy sign-up/subsidy by T-Mobile) versus Verizon selling Droids (with easy sign-up/subsidy by Verizon). It's a great device and I love mine, but that doesn't mean Google is equipped to be able to sell it.

Actually, paying more on eBay for a device that is scarce is just called economics. Though, it would be surprising to learn that the price was much higher than the original unlocked price + $30 - since you can still purchase one if you have registered yourself as a developer with an Android Market account.

kevindication··on On Why Open Source Developers run Mac OS X
My couple-of-years-old Dell laptop running vanilla Ubuntu controls my camcorder (over firewire, no less) just fine. I used kino or one of the other non-linear editors to cut the files up and add music. Pretty simple with no fiddling actually.

I don't exactly get the people who advocate that everyone should use Linux, but I especially don't get the people who have stuck their head in the sand about the fact that the Linux Desktop is quite usable these days with no extra configuration. It's not worthy of argument and a misdirection at best.

kevindication··on Delicious's Data Policy is Like Setting a Museum on Fire
And really, slowing your connections down to rates that are measured in baud would be the most fun.
kevindication··on The DC Startup Community
I followed the links to each startup's site. If they didn't provide an address on the site, I checked their whois. If that was private, then I didn't add them to the map. So there are definitely a few that didn't make the cut because they're being extra stealthy.
kevindication··on The DC Startup Community
As a DC area coder interested in startups, I thought I would map this to see where the hot spots are. I was not surprised to learn that there were several along the Dulles Toll road, but I didn't know that downtown DC was a favorite.

My map: http://bit.ly/fO9gyL

kevindication··on OOP practiced backwards is "POO"
The observations are an interesting expansion on the idea of Duck typing.
kevindication··on Why we’re really happy with AppEngine (and not going anywhere else)
That looks exactly like what I needed. I will have to come back and give them a try again. Thanks.
kevindication··on Why we’re really happy with AppEngine (and not going anywhere else)
My first impression of GAE (admittedly, many months ago) was that it was very painful to deal with loading or otherwise manipulating data in BigTable. Do you have any shortcuts or advice here? Has it improved?

Annoying Example: I realized that I needed to delete a lot of records from the table. I created a URL that I could ping periodically to delete a bunch, then get killed because it was taking too long, repeat.

kevindication··on I Quit Hacker News
> 6. It removes comments from where they should be, on the destination site.

I think this is the reason Hacker News exists. The comment threads on destination sites are scattered across the Internet and do not bring any one community together. They are also often filled with some of the least desirable commentary possible. Read any of the comments on a Washington Post article, say, for an example of the rubbish that is exceeded only by Youtube commentary.

kevindication··on For 18 minutes, China hijacked 15 percent of the world’s Internet traffic
If you want more technical internet routing information, always look to NANOG. These two threads are discussing what happened, as it happened, by the people who are likely to fix/deal with it:

kevindication··on Using WolframAlpha to Hack Text CAPTCHA
I immediately wondered the same thing. An example from their questions was:

Q: "Which word contains “z” from the list: zoologist, midwifery, spiderweb, crimps?" A: "zoologist"

But what if you change up that list a bit?

Q: "Which word contains “z” from the list: action, jackson, midwifery, zoologist, spiderweb, crimps?" A: "jackson"

Alpha's sentence digestion has always left me going: huh?

kevindication··on Need a name for your startup? I wrote a domain name generator in Node.JS
If you want to keep the queries mostly in-house, you can get access to Verisign's copy of the .com zone file for free and download it once a day.

http://www.verisign.com/domain-name-services/domain-informat...

And if you don't even want to change your code, you could fire up a DNS server that serves the entries from that file.

kevindication··on Just buy this one
It's really so you can say "just go to this site" when you have lots of relatives asking you which electronic gadget is best in its class. After all, they really mean "which one should I buy?" Hence the name of the site.
kevindication··on Ymacs -- An Emacs-like editor for the Web
Much like the Borg, emacs is not integrated into applications - applications are assimilated into emacs. :-)

(An 80% emacs user myself.)

kevindication··on HML = Hanna Montana Linux Distro
On the other hand, this is exactly the level of quality of most merchandise displaying the Hannah Montana brand.
kevindication··on Firebug Metamorphosis
Chrome's developer tools are quite nice. They provide a lot of information in a pleasing fashion - both functionally because it gets you access to everything you needed when you decided to install Firebug, and aesthetically, because it all looks good. I also found that Chrome's tools excel in one area especially, that is, locating errors in a document and quickly getting to the root cause. I recently picked up someone else's pile of HTML and javascript and was able to quickly make sense of what was wrong and fix it.

I still use Firebug at work because I don't have Chrome there, but for home projects I've pretty much switched entirely.

kevindication··on Bike ride, accident, and ambulance trip tracked on Runkeeper
Wow, down-voted for providing some first hand information? Maybe there are some angry drivers reading this.
kevindication··on Bike ride, accident, and ambulance trip tracked on Runkeeper
In DC it's only illegal to ride on the sidewalks in a very specific, downtown business district that's marked by a lot of pedestrian traffic.

I wouldn't say it's all that safe on the street in DC. I've very nearly been run over by cars (especially cabs) that want to turn right out of a circle (which even has a bike lane).

kevindication··on Vaccines don't cause autism
Provided that most everyone else does get vaccinated, it should be fine to avoid vaccinating the small percentage of people with natural allergic reactions to the vaccine.

I don't think you should find the allergic culpable in your scheme, because if the reaction is bad enough, you're asking them to either endure suffering or die so that there is no possibility that they can harm you.

kevindication··on Revisiting Solid State Hard Drives
Parse it once more: "Operating systems earlier than Windows 7 and the latest, greatest Linux kernel should beware"

Translation: latest, greatest Linux kernels support TRIM.

kevindication··on [dead]
Is this story news because a powerful guy was forced to submit to the rules that everyone else must abide?
kevindication··on Linus Torvalds became US citizen
Right, you can still do it but there can be some awkward consequences.

This is highly unlikely, but for instance if you're eligible for a draft, and both countries draft you, one of them is not going to be happy with your response.

There are probably some more likely scenarios where your obligations to one of your nations are in conflict with the other.

kevindication··on I own you, and you're easily replaceable.
Presumably this is why Google is buying everyone breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
kevindication··on A look at the wireless traffic of MIT students
You could have rewritten this article without the word wireless. It's only relevant because he didn't have to deal with a switched network.

No wireless packet analysis at all? Weak.

kevindication··on Ask PG: What's the deal with search on HN?
I think you mostly want search when you decide to submit a link. Since you don't want to submit a duplicate article, you have to check searchyc first.
