kevindication··on Domain-squatting parasites not interested in haggling, apparently.
The post is part tongue-in-cheek. You can't call him clueless just because the domain is only worth $200 to him.
kevindication··on DEF CON 19 - hackers get hacked
Friend of mine came back from Defcon complaining of some of the exact same symptoms as those listed by coderman and said he'd be DBANning his phone later.
kevindication··on Scientists find evidence of salt water flowing on Mars
FTA: "But the evidence is, so far, weak."
kevindication··on Netflix introduces new plans and price changes
Yes, really. There was a class action lawsuit. Your anecdote isn't helpful except to prove that yes, there can be exceptions.
kevindication··on Netflix introduces new plans and price changes
It's still not unlimited (DVDs) since Netflix throttles you if you are too quick to watch and return your movies.
kevindication··on Live coverage of the last Shuttle launch (STS-135, Atlantis)
(thats gillion dollars, not g-forces)
kevindication··on Facebook's Three New Products
You may have been one of the few using ICQ and MSN after AIM. ICQ was much earlier in the chronology (we used to play with it when we got bored on IRC) and no one used MSN. :-P
kevindication··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (July 2011)

kevindication··on Node.js v0.4.9 released
Scalable networking doesn't require multiple cores, just good use of the select/poll mechanisms at your disposal (well, and bandwidth).

If you've got a CPU bound problem, you might farm that out to something else.

kevindication··on Better Python Scraping - Installing lxml and Beautiful Soup
Works just fine on Ubuntu.
kevindication··on Groupon is Effectively Insolvent
Wouldn't it be possible to override this with a user agent stylesheet?
kevindication··on Insecurity in the Jungle (disk)
Stupid question: Why is the 34 character password easier to crack than the 8 character password?

(Upon re-reading I think I may have missed the assumption that the long password only contains english text, no punctuation, numerics, etc.)

kevindication··on SonyPictures.com hacked, personal information and passwords compromised
Understand regarding parenting. I do that myself. :-)

I do see your point about Sony, and they may in fact be an outlier here. I think I've been accustomed to the story of customer information breaches from large corporations though, and so maybe I'm overly pessimistic?

kevindication··on SonyPictures.com hacked, personal information and passwords compromised
"Any" is probably an exaggeration. I'd cede that and accept "most." We can hope that Google is an exception because of the caliber of employee they hire, since obviously they also have a lot of domain knowledge. But, I think that only means we're quibbling about the embarrassment level of these breaches.
kevindication··on SonyPictures.com hacked, personal information and passwords compromised
I had to stop a previous employer from doing just that in 2003. It was bad practice then, too. Big companies are just more susceptible to these kinds of short-cuts. Especially shortcuts with no clear benefit except to a lazy programmer.

I remain pessimistic.

kevindication··on SonyPictures.com hacked, personal information and passwords compromised
Disagree on absurdity. I'm certain that if you focused enough eyes on any company with as much surface area exposed to the internet you'd poke just as many holes.
kevindication··on Alternative jQuery Documentation
It's easy to see what's wrong with invalid HTML.

What's wrong with valid HTML?

kevindication··on Firefox add-on with 7m downloads secretly tracks your browsing history
The difference being that you have to decide to install this harmful extension. ActiveX just gets loaded during regular browsing.
kevindication··on Stallman's Dystopia
The point of the article is in fact that because the companies have acted in their (perceived) best interests, we have lost freedom.

And that maybe we should care.

kevindication··on Cool, but obscure Unix tools
On debian (and derivatives) the package is called "ack-grep"
kevindication··on Why we've reached the end of the camera megapixel race
Canon, Nikon, et al are making those cameras for photographers, not smartphone users. The interfaces may be alien to a newcomer but are really just power tools for working photographers.
kevindication··on Find a Great Domain Name (Beta code is YCOMBINATOR)
Name spinner returned a huge list of available names with a suffix appended to my seed, but then that list was repeated as unavailable beneath it.
kevindication··on Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal)
There is apparently a lot of hate among the downvoters today. Disagreeing with a pro-OSX comment is death here.
kevindication··on Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal)
This comment implies as well that laptops didn't sleep reliably before OSX.
kevindication··on Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal)
Apt is the only system I've ever felt fully comfortable with when doing upgrades. It was neither a problem under Debian nor Ubuntu.

Do you have a tendency to make system changes that get in the way of the upgrades? (i.e., where has it gotten stuck for you before?)

kevindication··on How to Open a Public-Restroom Door
Because every surface from the bathroom to your desk isn't covered in the germs of everyone else?

Personally, I look at exiting the bathroom as a chance to strengthen my immune system.

kevindication··on The Youth Unemployment Bomb
One piece of advice: don't let the job ad make you think you're unqualified and stop you from applying. Employers often a) don't know what they want/need b) throw everything they can think of in that ad. It may be a challenge to get past the naive recruiter without all of the skills mentioned on your resume, but it can be worth it because the interview will bear out whether you'll actually be useful to the hiring manager.
kevindication··on Airplane Mode
My experience is flight attendants that don't know the current policy, and assume that all phones have to be off. Maybe I'm just unlucky.
kevindication··on Airplane Mode
The irony is that Airplane Mode doesn't permit you use your phone on an airplane (at least per US airline policy, despite the FAA indicating that airlines may let passengers use phones in airplane mode).

At least it lets you have a conversation without being interrupted.
