kevinak··on Show HN: PeerSend – Social Payments powered by crypto
This isn’t built on top of Bitcoin, it’s built on Bitcoin hard fork. Also, why would you use stable coins and thus adding a centralised point of failure when Bitcoin already solves this? Just use it as payment rails.
kevinak··on Coinbase Cloud
You know who can? Anyone in El Salvador.
kevinak··on El Salvador’s new Bitcoin wallets could cost Western Union $400M a year
I don't think that's accurate. Where have you read that they are using USDT?
kevinak··on El Salvador’s new Bitcoin wallets could cost Western Union $400M a year
For all practical use-cases it is. Last time I used LN (earlier today) it cost me 0.05% to send some money.
kevinak··on El Salvador’s new Bitcoin wallets could cost Western Union $400M a year
When I look at WU for sending that amount to El Salvador from Sweden it's closes to $250. Are you sure it's only 12 AUD? There's a hefty fee baked into the exchange rate.
kevinak··on A $10k poker win changed how I think

kevinak··on macOS in Svelte
We're going to have him on Svelte Radio in a couple of weeks to talk about this! Stay tuned :)
kevinak··on Open-source alternatives to popular B2B tools
An open-source alternative to Retool is Budibase - https://www.budibase.com/

Edit: It was apparently already on there.

RGB isn't custodial at all.

We've been building Budibase without SK and it's great: https://github.com/Budibase/budibase

kevinak··on Elder.js – An Opinionated, SEO Focused, Svelte Framework
No, SvelteKit does not have support for partial hydration.

What you're describing is the no js option in SK. That doesn't allow you to selectively add some JS, it's either all or nothing. You set this option on a per page basis, not per component.

The massaging of data that Nick talks about here has to do with data that is needed to build the actual pages, not runtime data (which you could use Stores for).

kevinak··on SvelteKit Is in Public Beta
This is so exciting! Been using SvelteKit this last week to build a new version of the Svelte Radio podcast website. Works very well and the DX is amazing.

Can't wait for whenever a Cloudflare Worker adapter is out!

kevinak··on Visa Plans to Enable Bitcoin Payments at 70M Merchants
Why is it flawed as a currency?
kevinak··on Visa Plans to Enable Bitcoin Payments at 70M Merchants
They could and they probably will if LN keeps growing. You wouldn’t need to trust VISA at all, LN is “trustless”. They would just be a cog in the wheel, like all the other LN “nodes”.
kevinak··on Visa Plans to Enable Bitcoin Payments at 70M Merchants
Fair enough, that’s why I wrote ”in the long run”. Also, there’s always the option of moving somewhere that doesn’t have this issue. Well, unless you’re from the US and must file taxes even when you’re not even in the country, I suppose.
kevinak··on Visa Plans to Enable Bitcoin Payments at 70M Merchants
It does. You don’t need to leave the L2 solution. Why would you when you have the possibility to transact for free? Liquidity on LN is growing by the day and as more and more people join there will be fewer and fewer reasons to settle.

Define works better. Has larger blockchains? All transactions don’t need to live in the blockchain.

kevinak··on Visa Plans to Enable Bitcoin Payments at 70M Merchants
The idea is to never go off-chain, so no need to close your channel(s). And aren't you already committing cash if you're "in" bitcoin?

The tax filing doesn't sound so bad in the long run. I'm sure someone will write some nifty tool to extract whatever payments you've done.

kevinak··on Visa Plans to Enable Bitcoin Payments at 70M Merchants
It's just on-chain layer 1 transactions that are somewhat expensive. The lightning network solves this and works great, can do thousands of transactions per second and has close to 0 fees. Feels like magic to use it :)
kevinak··on Visa Plans to Enable Bitcoin Payments at 70M Merchants
Wondering the same. I hope they use the Lightning Network. If it's just another debit card on top of some exchange that's pretty boring.

Elder.js (Svelte framework) has partial hydration OOTB: https://github.com/Elderjs/elderjs
kevinak··on Harvard, Oxford, Stanford doctors among leaders of global anti-lockdown movement
This article doesn’t match with reality. Pretty much none of the restrictions put in place here in Sweden have changed since they were put in place. Swedish authorities haven’t given any sign of wanting to adjust things other than letting the elderly ho outside more. Number of infections have gone up since most people came back from vacation, yet it hasn’t resulted in an increased death rate, see https://adamaltmejd.se/covid/
kevinak··on Amazon’s business model meets Sweden’s labor unions
I don't think your point about the handling fee rings very true. If you followed the news at the time when it was added you would know that it was put in place to counter the huge workload that came with handling all the packages from cheap Chinese online stores (like Wish). Before that PostNord almost never charged for handling packages from outside the EU. The same can not be said about DHL, UPS and Fedex who ALWAYS make sure to charge extra for handling any package from outside the EU, almost without fail.

It makes sense in my mind that the buyer should be the one to pay for the handling of what they buy. I don't want to subsidise your shopping/shipping via my taxes, they're high enough as it is.
