keville··on The JavaScript Trap
So he dismissed the question with some hand-waving and mumbling about food trucks?

Gets to ~97% in the first few minutes and then takes a long time hunting for very small gains. I was hoping to see more dramatic improvement after the first couple of minutes as well, but I was amused by the thought that followed after my evolving image failed to look successively more like a Mondrian.

We were told early in public school that we share 98% (or some such very high number percent) of our DNA with our simian relatives. I always was amazed at how just small a section of the genome was responsible for such amazing diversity among primates, or even mammals in general.

Seeing the wild differences that result in these images when you're given 3% of leeway between generations really helps me appreciate the vast number of individuals in our species!

I haven't looked at the specific source, but I can't imagine there's anything preventing this from being modified to run as a Web Worker on multiple threads.

I look forward to watching a movie of photons getting trapped in quantum wells during photosynthesis sometime soon!

Not "wasted" -- those hours led to a quite fruitful career in Web development. Picking apart an application skins and configuration, and learning some of the nasty, filthy tricks you can turn with bitmaps? That is knowledge I still use just about every day.

"Displays seem to be in a somewhat better state than controls."

Fifty years on, this still seems to be the case.

keville··on Neurons in human skin perform advanced calculations
Nice, so our nervous system uses a CDN? Not much of a surprise given latency concerns at the edges of the network.

While I can't really fault a non-native English speaker for the quality of grammar in that article, I too find the content somewhat lacking in substance. The author encourages other developers on this service to dramatically undercut the prices of competitors. Surely his "10x" capabilities allow him to justify guiding clients into paying for services that optimize his time but do not necessarily meet their original requirements.
keville··on Source of the recent outagelet
I guess "outagelet" is a replacement for "downtime".

OP's nick is "MIT Hacker" and he never disassembled his bike pump?

Revoke that handle, STAT!

keville··on Ask HN: What is your favorite Javascript code snippet?
for (var i=0, node; node=parentElem.childNodes.item(i); i++) { // iterates over an element's child nodes; 2nd statement in for loop returns undefined when out of items }
keville··on Ask HN: How horrible is the SF to Silicon Valley commute?
At least two companies in the South Bay (Google, Yahoo) hire daily shuttles for employees living in San Francisco, and most offer some form of compensation for those who take public transportation. Are you really losing 2-3 hours when you could be processing email on your smartphone, or reading the news and social updates that you would otherwise dick around with during the workday?
