kesor··on USA AI-Related Export Controls
What you can do: - Use AI chips not linked to China or other restricted countries. - Train (non-Chinese) AI models using U.S. chips, if you know they won't be used by or for China or its military. - Analyze or test Chinese AI chips strictly for research (e.g., destructive testing), not deployment.

What you cannot do: - Use, sell, or integrate Chinese AI chips (e.g., Huawei Ascend). - Sell U.S. AI chips if you know they'll be used to train AI for China or other restricted countries. - Train AI models for or on behalf of Chinese entities, even if hosted outside China. - Assist or support AI model training that may benefit Chinese military or intelligence (this includes U.S. persons, not just companies). - Ignore red flags like shady addresses, no website, unclear end users, or odd purchase behavior. - Pretend you don't know a violation might happen ("self-blinding" is not allowed). - Skip due diligence - you're required to verify customers, uses, and re-export risks.

kesor··on Huawei releases an open weight model trained on Huawei Ascend GPUs
> The agency's Bureau of Industry and Security said in a statement Tuesday that it's also planning to warn the public about "the potential consequences of allowing US AI chips to be used for training and inference of Chinese AI models."

The A.I. war is intense, and you can clearly see who is s** their pants here.

kesor··on Why We're Moving on from Nix
When a company is writing all of their technology and business using, lets say JavaScript. And then they come here and post about them switching to some NIH home-brewed language instead because they couldn't understand how functions or arrays work. That is not a problem with the people commenting on their stupidity.
kesor··on Why We're Moving on from Nix
Creating overlays on nixpkgs is fairly trivial. There was a bug a couple of weeks ago with yt-dlp, which was fixed in the nightly version. But even today the new version is not yet available in nixpkgs-unstable. Did I wait all this time with a broken yt-dlp? No! I created a derivation that overrides the git commit of the original yt-dlp, and added it as an overlay to nixpkgs. Once nixpkgs has the newer version, I'll remove the overlay and customized derivation. This is a 5-lines-of-code change. You don't have to use flakes if you don't want to, it works without flakes as well.

Now compare the above with how you would customize a version in other systems, like Debian with apt-pkgs ...

kesor··on Why We're Moving on from Nix
It works best to post your "solution" on hacker news and get roasted by ALL the commenters who have a clue while you have none.
kesor··on Why We're Moving on from Nix
Looks like they are trying to force versions into where there are none. Just like trying to force a square cube into a round hole.

"Default versions" breaking things that depend on them? What is that? It is like using docker's ":latest" tag and being surprised each time that a new server falls on its face because the "default" image is actually a different version from the previous "default" image.

I don't understand any of the explanations in this blog post. Seems like people who have zero clue about what a "version" of a software is.

"no way of splitting up the Nix dependencies into separate layers" - Why? Of course you can split /nix/store into as many layers as you need. Do they even know how to use containers and how to use Nix in the first place?

With the clear incompetence of these people, no wonder that their proposed solution smells like a decomposed fish.

Classic NIH syndrome. There is going to be no surprise to see them meet the exact same problems they didn't solve with Nix to infest their new "solution".

kesor··on Examining problematic speech and behavior in World of Warcraft (2022)
Abuse exists between humans, be it in game environments, or other places. What else is new? As-if such behavior as cherry-picked in this study is not prevalent at home with family members, or at work with colleagues.

This is why you have free will and a choice. You don't like the place you're at and the toxic people yelling at you. Leave. If people stay and take the abuse, does that say something about humans in general or games in particular? Not really, happens everywhere, that is why you have Stockholm Syndrome explained back in the 70s.

kesor··on Salesforce acquires Own for $1.9B it was valued at $3.3B in Series E 2021
Surely the founders didn't buy the shares they still have at Series E valuation. When founders created the company, they create for example 1,000,000 shares valued at $0.01 each. Effectively valuing the company $10K.

And they buy the shares themselves. Then, when an investor comes in, they reevaluate the company, and the investor buys some portion of the shares for $1/each (just an example) valuing the company at $1M. This investor might have only bought 20% of the shares, i.e. 200,000 while the founders still hold their 800,000.

During future investments, the company might be interested to have a higher number of shares. So they can issue a share split, every 1 share becomes 10 shares and everyone's price-of-purchase (basis) is multiplied by 10 per share. So 1 share for $1 becomes 10 shares for $0.1/each or $1 total.

And so it goes, new investors come in, existing investors and founders sell some portion of shares to them and the valuation of the company is adjusted based on the new price.

Usually, some portion of the shares is also reserved for the employee share options program (ESOP). Where each employee who joins the company receives a number of options with a specified strike price. For example, an employee might receive 100 options with $5 strike price. Another employee who joined later, after several share splits even, might receive 100 options with $15 strike price.

The employees who decide to exercise their options and buy the actual shares, need to pay the strike price while the share price might be very different. So if an employee has $5 strike options, and the new valuation of the company is $50/share, the employee pays $5 and receives one share which he can right away sell for $50.

This is the gist of it. But there are other considerations, like investor contracts might have stipulations about preferred shares vs. common shares, and things like an agreed multiple. So an investor's share that he bought at $100 will also get sold for $200 even when the new valuation says a share is only worth $50. And the employees will split the remainder (if there is one) amongst themselves.

So, depending on how early you joined the company, your shares are either worthless (for newcomers) or maybe worth something if you're one of the early employees, and most probably worth a lot for the founders.

Then there is also the buying company who is interested in retaining some important people. And these people usually get more than just a salary, they might get promised payouts in the form of bonuses for the next four/five years of their employment in the new company. And the new company frequently also has an ESOP program they get to participate in—which works differently in publicly traded companies vs. private ones.

kesor··on Ask HN: How do you organize work as a solo developer?
The medium is less important. The ceremony is more important.

You don't need a lot of ceremony. But adding some ceremony is making all the difference between feeling unorganized vs. feeling on track.

Work requires planning. You probably already have the tracking work part covered. You should also improve the planning of work, as a ceremony.

Building a system to track work, regardless of the medium where you do it, will pay dividends. You should also write down the system you chose, and from time to time review and improve upon your system.

There are multiple tools you can borrow for your system from the field of project management. Specifically for the planning and the tracking phases.

One example out of many can be WBS.

kesor··on Tell HN: ChatGPT cut off date now Jan 2022
The model doesn't "know" anything. But if you provide it with certain assertions, it will repeat them back to you.

For example, if you make a prompt saying "XX represents up, and YY represents down. Tell me how to write upside-down using these." ; Then you can argue that it "knows" which pairs of characters represent which direction. Not real knowledge, just regurgitation of whatever it was prompted with.

https://chat.openai.com/share/f6c1d260-2246-4388-8c98-290a1d...

In exactly the same way your prompt is preceded with OpenAI's prefix that sets up some "facts" about itself, telling the model what its name is, what today's date is, and what it's knowledge cutoff date is. Even though they might have trained the model on much older (or much newer) data and texts, it will still tell you the cutoff date that is part of the prompt it was provided with.
