kerpele··on You probably won’t make it to the top
I don't understand why commenters here are bashing this article and/or the author. Why do people see financial success as the only worthwhile goal?
kerpele··on Software Patents Considered Harmful
I wholeheartedly agree with this article. The common defense for software patents is that a small company doesn't have any other means to prevent a big company from copying its invention, but I'd claim that a small company can't afford to build the patent portfolio in the first place and thus even that point is moot.
kerpele··on YubiKey 5 Series with New NFC and FIDO2 Passwordless Features
How big is the NFC antenna?! The size difference of 5C and 5C nano is pretty big but if it still can't fit the antenna then it must be huge
kerpele··on The U.S. Air Force learned to code and saved the Pentagon millions
From the article: 'In addition to the name, the team chose a hashtag for its project that is a nod to both agile software development, and the fact that Kessel Run’s culture is more startup than strictly military: #agileAF

“The AF stands for Air Force,” Furtado assured me.'

I wonder where the reporter's scepticism comes from...

kerpele··on We analysed 75K builds and this is what we learned about CI/CD
I'm not sure if their numbers are sound. For example they claim to be able to deduce hosting service market share from their build numbers, but considering GitLab has built-in CI/CD system and GitHub doesn't it would make sense to me that the numbers they see are not directly comparable.

Interesting numbers but no real value without more analysis IMO.

kerpele··on Facebook Overhauls News Feed to Focus on What Friends and Family Share
I just wish they would stop tracking me and everyone I interact with whenever and wherever
kerpele··on Guys, unless you are really hot you are just wasting your time on Tinder
As far as I know men behave the same way and thus this article comes across as misogynous as it tries to portray women as being unfair or something.
kerpele··on Norway votes to decriminalise drugs and offer treatment instead of jail time
I don't have a source right now, but I remember reading that drug use in total went down in Portugal after decriminalisation. Probably due to people having better access to help and therefore better chance of kicking the habit
kerpele··on Female Congressional Candidate Ends Run After Being Accused of Sexual Harassment
Yes I do. It's called basic decency, and attitudes like yours are a big part of why we are in this mess.
kerpele··on Female Congressional Candidate Ends Run After Being Accused of Sexual Harassment
Wow. I can't tell if you're a middle-schooler, a troll or Milo.

If asking is enough to kill romance then it needs to die in that instance. Try again with someone else and if that someone else actually likes you they'll just think of you as considerate.

kerpele··on Female Congressional Candidate Ends Run After Being Accused of Sexual Harassment
How about asking before kissing? It is not "embarrassing faux-pas" to kiss a woman who doesn't want it, it is violating their personal space.
kerpele··on Comcast is injecting 400+ lines of JavaScript into web pages
I love the Comcast representative's comment basically saying "we've been doing this for years, too late to complain now"
kerpele··on The Environmental Case Against Bitcoin
So with the hard limit there's a set amount of transactions that fit into a block? And whoever wants to get their transaction validated faster can bid a higher fee?
kerpele··on The Environmental Case Against Bitcoin
They mention in the article that as there is a limited amount of coins that can be mined the mining activity will eventually die down, but as I understand it the verification and validation of transactions happens along with mining.

How will verification work if mining stops? Or will the mining just stop producing new coins but continue being profitable with just the transaction fees?

kerpele··on Man Who Sent World's First Text Message 25 Years Ago
But it was still sent from a PC instead of another phone so not really the commercial use-case. And regardless, why would they not mention it instead of making this guy sound like he actually wrote the whole sms system?
kerpele··on Man Who Sent World's First Text Message 25 Years Ago
Any prototype would have been tested in the lab first.
kerpele··on Man Who Sent World's First Text Message 25 Years Ago
I'm having a hard time believing someone would have had a phone capable of receiving text messages at a Christmas party if nobody had ever before successfully sent (and therefore received) one.
kerpele··on DHS Plans To Gather Social Media Info
No argument, just a question. The answer will affect my decision whenever I'm asked to travel to the US next and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
kerpele··on DHS Plans To Gather Social Media Info
Does this include visitors or just immigrants? Or were visitors already targeted by preceding rules?
kerpele··on To type or not to type: quantifying detectable bugs in JavaScript
My team is in the process of switching a React app to TypeScript and an interesting issue popped up just today.

I was refactoring some component to be able to implement a new feature. At some point of the process I managed to break the component so that it would not render, only complained about an object not being a proper React component and that I was probably trying to render a bunch of items that should be put in an array. The error was reported by something deep inside React so I couldn't tell from the stack trace where the issue was. After trying to find the problematic bit by trial and error (lots of undo/redo there) I finally decided to just move the whole file to TypeScript. 20 minutes later I was done and the error was gone. I don't even know what I did to fix it but obviously I had to change quite a few things here and there to get the file to compile cleanly with decent typing and one of those type errors must have been the key.

kerpele··on Energy Efficiency Across Programming Languages
It seems to only be significantly different with fannkuch-redux. Looking at the CLBG page (http://benchmarksgame.alioth.debian.org/u32/performance.php?...) for that algorithm there doesn't seem to be very big difference at all.

I cannot explain the difference and if this is indeed an error by the authors of the paper it casts a fairly big shadow on the reliability of the rest of the data.

kerpele··on FCC accidentally leaks internal “joke” memo about Chairman Pai [pdf]
Probably a hack but a fairly entertaining one
kerpele··on Cal State will no longer require math and English placement exams
Unless the point is to have more people in regardless of whether they have any possibility to graduate I don't understand this. How many highly talented kids have already been lost just because they didn't know what they wanted in life at 15 and thus have much lower high school grades and sat scores and whatnot than what they are actually capable of?
