kennethrc··on Global Caps Lock Key
WYS, and in 2025 I'm surprised that the CL (a holdout from typewriter days, right?) still exists and/or isn't one of those "hold to toggle" keys.
kennethrc··on Ask HN: Programmers who aren't front/back end/web developers, what is your job?
Essentially an embedded SW Dev, working on either bare-metal or something using Linux as an OS. I tell non-SW people (and a few who are) that I "do the stuff that happens from the time you press the power button to the time your 'thing' is ready to use", then they get it.
kennethrc··on Thunderbolt 5 vs. Thunderbolt 4: Everything you need to know
Isn't that exactly backwards? "USB4 is TB with optional features ...?"
kennethrc··on Thunderbolt 5 vs. Thunderbolt 4: Everything you need to know
Pretty sure he's talking about our Samsung Odyssey G9 57"

I too get 7680x2160x120Hz via TB4

kennethrc··on CISA: Do not use SMS as a second factor for authentication [pdf]
Yeah, I'm more worried about some random GoogleFlag locking me out of my account than anything else. That being said, unlike most of the public I know a couple of Googlers personally, but it's a shame that I'd even need to be lucky like that.
kennethrc··on Texas school district bans the Bible because of its sexual content
I can't be the only one here who sees what the Bible-banners were really trying to demonstrate, right?
kennethrc··on CISA: Do not use SMS as a second factor for authentication [pdf]
My main SMS is Google Voice, which (AFAIK, enlighten me otherwise) is immune to most attacks w/o some sort of social engineering.

I just wish it were trusted more, as the number of places that'll let me use it for 2FA is decreasing (but thankfully most of the places I've been Grandfathered in are still working with it).

kennethrc··on One of our clients hasn't paid us $130k – or "Why Every Contract Clause Matters"
> The accounts payable person who actually pushed the button that cut the checks <- The most important one if you want to get paid on time.

Yup. I've had such people at the Xmas-present/birthday-gift level too; sometimes I get paid out before even the utilities.

kennethrc··on The Sperry Rand Corporation
Eh? If I spend even five minutes a day (i.e., less time spent going to the toilet) looking at ads I'd be surprised.
kennethrc··on If You Think You Can Hold a Grudge, Consider the Crow
I mean, a bunch of 'em is called a "murder", FFS :)
kennethrc··on MikroTik and Ampere co-developing a product line with server-class CPUs
+1 Just found out about them 4 years ago, they are awesome.
kennethrc··on Using an 8K TV as a Monitor
> OLED

I use mine for productivity only (I don't game at all) and it seems the consensus is OLED's no good for things like Kconsole/xterm (-style) windows and general text readability, though.

kennethrc··on Using an 8K TV as a Monitor
I have the 57" version, 7680x2160. It's ... indispensable ... all my Konsoles, app windows, etc. all on one screen with no overlaps.

Got it on a Samsung sale for ~$1500 IIRC, one of the best upgrades I'd ever done.

kennethrc··on Gang of Raccoons Mobs Woman in Casper Hotel Parking Lot
I'd think it needs more detail, though?
kennethrc··on Qualcomm cancels Snapdragon Dev Kit, refunds all orders
> OK, I need someone to talk me out of it

Looks like ARM Holdings has: https://www.reuters.com/technology/arm-holdings-cancel-qualc...

So I'm taking it back; if Qualcomm loses this case, this chip is certainly abandoned.

kennethrc··on Gang of Raccoons Mobs Woman in Casper Hotel Parking Lot
This "keeps" happening, yet no-one's posted up a simple sign?
kennethrc··on Qualcomm cancels Snapdragon Dev Kit, refunds all orders
Thankfully I do!

Ordered one, it's coming today. Since I have TotalTech if I completely hate it I've got something like two months to give up on it. I don't game so if I can pull it off I can leave my XPS at home; we'll see ....

kennethrc··on Qualcomm cancels Snapdragon Dev Kit, refunds all orders
Linux is my DD on Wintel (AlderLake); IIRC (K)Ubuntu have those same packages in ARMv8 (and gcc for the rest) so it should 99% be the same for me.
kennethrc··on Qualcomm cancels Snapdragon Dev Kit, refunds all orders
I play with ARM in the Day Jobs but the full laptop form-factor is really appealing
kennethrc··on Qualcomm cancels Snapdragon Dev Kit, refunds all orders
It's still $800 ... OK, I need someone to talk me out of it (esp. as the last thing I need is Yet Another Tinkering Sinkhole :) )

But have you encountered any serious issues so far (I expect to put Linux on it, and I build my own kernels).

kennethrc··on I Quit Teaching Because of ChatGPT
Some things never change, apparently- one wonders if "Get off my lawn, you damn kids!" has been around since the First Grandfather
kennethrc··on I Quit Teaching Because of ChatGPT
Nah, this "older folk" loves my cameras and it's an excellent enhancement
kennethrc··on I Quit Teaching Because of ChatGPT
Define "cannot navigate"? I've been driving for decades, but where I live traffic is everywhere so I don't go more than a few miles without using Waze and its real-time traffic monitoring.
kennethrc··on Another new wasp species discovered by researchers
> If I recall correctly there is a parasitic wasp that parasitizes a parasitic wasp that parasitizes a parasitic wasp that parasitizes some kind of caterpillar.

"Yo Dawg, we heard you like parasites, so we put a parasite INSIDE your parasite INSIDE ..."

kennethrc··on Git Bash is my preferred Windows shell
I have it available, but GitBash seems to work better with my workflow. BTW, when I checked to see how to donate, apparently my client pays for it; I thought it was OOS.
kennethrc··on Git Bash is my preferred Windows shell
I'm "All Linux, all the time" at home, develop in it, help out with the Kernel a little bit, only use Windows at home in a VM, etc.

I'd just started working for a client that is fully entrenched in Windows, but we're doing bare-metal and Linux-y work. When I'd discovered I couldn't use Linux as my daily driver due to security/policy(/tooling) reasons, one of my co-workers told me about Git Bash, and it's worked out so well that ... <looks left, looks right> ... when we were given the opportunity to use Linux but VM Windows, I kept the Windows machine.

GitBash has made Windows painless for my work's use-case. I should probably throw a few $$ at them ....
