kelsey98765431··on Spies Jumped from One Network to Another via Wi-Fi in an Unprecedented Hack
Careful buddy, if you worked for who you think then the NDA is STRONGLY enforceable by some guys breaking into your house in the middle of the night... stay frosty

kelsey98765431··on Show HN: A macOS Client for HuggingFace Chat
first impression: it's slick, looks a bit rough but promising, looking forward to using this and hope it improves.
kelsey98765431··on Microsoft said it lost weeks of security logs for its customers' cloud products
I wonder which intelligence operation this supported...
kelsey98765431··on Show HN: HN Update – Hourly news broadcast of top HN stories
Frankly this is super fantastic. Thank you. Any possibility to make this longer, and split it into sections with updates on previous stories at the end? I love this concept a lot.
kelsey98765431··on Cross-Process Spectre Exploitation
misleading as chrome has recently gone to the trouble of removing adblock from their browser at a plumbing level, opening users up to malicious advertisements and trackers in search of google ad revenue. do not use chrome for the love of god.
kelsey98765431··on The C23 edition of Modern C
MipsBE is very common in edge devices on many networks. You may have 5 MipsBE devices in your home or office without realizing. It's almost never an issue so nobody cares, but they are common.
kelsey98765431··on FreeBSD: How Can We Make It More Attractive to New Users?

kelsey98765431··on Executives and Research Disagree About Hybrid Work. Why?
the amount of times i have been asked to turn on my camera is ridiculous, i do not owe some old man a smile and i will gladly allow myself to be let go over it every time. the nerve of some people is astounding.
kelsey98765431··on FreeBSD: How Can We Make It More Attractive to New Users?

how about we make the demon gay and trans instead
kelsey98765431··on An Update on Gccrs Development
My money is on that last one. Don't GCC frontends usually come before a new LLVM backend?
kelsey98765431··on Microsoft Recall is now an explorer.exe dependency
Proton is able to run just about anything now, not just games. Stop using Microsoft Operating Systems where you can and mark them as needing replacement with real software in all your reports.

the internet is a better school than some old decrepit building with middle aged dweebs who get paid 40k a year to stand for 40 minutes at a time each

When will these money hungry vultures realize that you cannot transition a foss "brand" into a proprietary system no matter how you pitch the tree tier? You can't have your name recognition and eat it too. These groups don't realize that "NewThing from the developers of Redis" holds so much more weight than "Redis is now closed source and you have to pay for it"? There is a net negative value in detonating the bomb that is a license change versus making something new and throwing the existing name's support behind it. Just look at literally every well known license changed software becoming irrelevant while the foss fork with a new name has no problem getting traction? Just look at the graveyard of Solaris, OpenOffice and others. The open source community deeply despises these relicensing scams and has proven time and time again not to fall for ignorant consumer brand identity marketing tactics?
kelsey98765431··on Ask HN: Does anyone use sound effects in their dev environment?
what is wrong with the top comments in this thread? Fastest way to get me to find an alternative software is to have it start beeping and whistling at me.
kelsey98765431··on Google partners with Internet Archive to link to archives in search
I noticed google's cache vanished and I feared IA would just feel even more pressure from the change, this spikes that into a near terror. When there was a google cache of everything available online it was harder to point at IA because you would need to face the juggernaut if you wanted to challenge caches in court. It feels like google is basically saying "good luck" with this change now, I foresee NYT and their scummy ilk getting aggressive about their precious content farms being jeopardized. Not a good omen from my view.
kelsey98765431··on The occult technology of the rollercoaster
this is just basic thermodynamics, converting liquid capital energy into emotional energy which has monetary value to justify the loss of heat produced by the conversion cascade from liquid capital to revenue
kelsey98765431··on Why bother with argv[0]?
Your fascination is rewarded by reading the other man sections such as section three:

https://linux.die.net/man/3/execve

If you already know about the additional man pages beyond user space, i cannot more strongly recommend diving into them. Additionally the gnu 'info coreutils' is a good place to start, as well as the glibc manual.

kelsey98765431··on Graph Language Models
Graphing is not only the future, it's the present that is happening behind closed doors that you don't get to hear about. The things that can be done already are insane and the capabilities are growing quickly. Agentic graph based systems are the future for ASI.
kelsey98765431··on Why bother with argv[0]?
This is how busybox works in 'shim' mode. I am not however concerned with the security argument here, if you have the ability to run code you have the ability to do n to the power of x insidious things, and arg[0] abuse is just one of dozens, (hundreds?) of vectors or useful building blocks in an attack. if we are suddenly giving a shit about security on nixens, we should be looking at deeper SELinux rollouts (ease of use for sysadmins and maintainers so we never see permissive mode instead of just applying the difficult to remember command that will patch your policy settings. We need root capabilities to continue to be separated in the kernel access control scheme and probably we need to start using namespaces much more liberally like projects like silverblue/bluefin which reimplement entire os stack as a series of containers. Stronger container foundations and ease of use for existing security mechanisms will take us much further than worrying about ANYTHING else in the ABI which by the way will never change as long as linus is alive, and he will live on forever as an LLM most likely with the amount of mailing list posts he has made over the years.

thank god, now we just need a decent gpt desktop app instrumentation proxy to expose the api and we can stop using the "screw u scarlet" voices they released for launch

Unfortunately things like a 500gb dump of sacredtexts website is not often found on torrent trackers or other 'warez' sites. Anna's is pretty great for written material that has been published offline, but even the wayback machine and archive.org have limited full scrapes aside from the published ones by the kiwix team.

kelsey98765431··on The World Map of the Internet in 2021
I had a nice version of this from maybe 2019 or 2020 that I kept above my desk for reference while working before moving to a new home a while back. I really liked it and may end up getting another one, I would prefer something a bit newer but it does take time to compile and make these. Highly reccomended for anyone working in the online space, I found a lot of cool foreign services I had no idea existed through the map.
kelsey98765431··on AI Has Created a Battle over Web Crawling
Just about 2 years ago, a long dormant project surged back to life becoming one of the best crawlers out there. Zimit was originally made to scrape mediawiki sites but it now is able to crawl literally anything into an offline archive file. I have been trying to grab the data i am guessing will shortly be put under much stricter anti scraping controls soon, and I am not the only one hoarding data. The winds are blowing towards a closed internet faster than I have ever seen in my life. Get it while you can.
kelsey98765431··on How a leading chain of psychiatric hospitals traps patients
Phone access is typically restricted to a supervised call using the phone on the staff administrator's desk who can simply cut you off and glare at you with silent promises of retaliation if you don't say what they want you to say and what they agreed to let you say before they hand you the phone, all with their finger resting on the disconnect button the whole time.

Unless you are not making them money, then they get you out of there asap and make calls on your behalf all day to other places to shuffle you around to.
