kej··on Maildir-utils: index, search and manage Maildir mailboxes
Depending on your specific needs, you probably want one of imapsync, isync/mbsync, or OfflineIMAP. You could also use mutt or Thunderbird or the client of your choice to connect to both servers and move items through the UI.
kej··on Colorado wolf reintroduction to move forward
I believe the previous poster meant that the wolves should have the rhino-like protections.
kej··on Anselm's Ontological Argument: A Guide for the Perplexed
That's an interesting example to pick since there was a brief period when educated people doubted the existence of the platypus, too.
kej··on Why is my Mac trying to force me to enroll with Expedia Group upon installation?
A similar issue on Windows will be a license key stored in UEFI that is tied to a company. A clean install will find that key and ask you to login with your company email and password. You can get around it by not being online during setup, but you're out of luck if you don't know that trick.
kej··on 'Fake' Seal Impression of Biblical King Jeroboam Is Authentic
The closest I know of is a penguin who is also a major general: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nils_Olav
kej··on 'Fake' Seal Impression of Biblical King Jeroboam Is Authentic
You make a bunch of great points, but I'd like to add that archeology can (and IMO ought to) be interesting to a tech audience even when it isn't wrapped up in modern geopolitics.

The article links to the paper [1] that describes the tests used to detect forgeries and the results for this particular artifact. There are electron microscopes and chemical analysis and all kinds of sciency stuff. I'll take that over "I rewrote an app in a different JavaScript framework" any day of the week.

kej··on Ask HN: What apps have you created for your own use?
Kind of similar, in the early days of COVID, I accidentally discovered that my state's website would have test results available several hours before they sent out the "view your results" email. So I made a script that would check the site every five or ten minutes and then ping me as soon as the result changed to something besides PENDING.

In the course of that I stumbled on https://ntfy.sh/ which solved the notification problem without needing Twitter, and I've used it since then to let me know when long-running scripts complete.

kej··on What will enter the public domain in 2024?
Mickey Mouse is trademarked as a word and as a picture and all kinds of derivatives like the silhouette of his head or the design of the eared hats. You can't use him as a symbol of your business or to suggest that your product comes from Disney, but none of that will stop you from making a new creative work featuring Mickey as he appeared in Steamboat Willie any more than McDonald's can stop you from writing a book where characters eat a Happy Meal.
kej··on The dead children we must see
I mean, yeah, Howard Zinn "told on himself" several hundred pages before that quote from the afterword. His whole thing is that lots of American history is only told from one side and he wanted to popularize a different view. The point of that quote is that not everyone lays their biases out up front the way he did.

In your math example, yes, pi is a constant of nature that simply is. However, in choosing pi over Euler's number or the square root of -1 for your comment, you've made an implicit judgement about their relative importance. That's probably inconsequential for most math facts, but could be a lot more impactful for people presenting history or the news.

kej··on The dead children we must see
Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from the afterword of Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States:

>But there is no such thing as a pure fact, innocent of interpretation. Behind every fact presented to the world—by a teacher, a writer, anyone—is a judgment. The judgment that has been made is that this fact is important, and that other facts, omitted, are not important.

kej··on PiDP-11
It's a few links deep, but the order page is here: https://www.ceds.dev/pidp

$270 for the kit plus $45 shipping, more if you want them to assemble it for you, and you provide the Pi.

kej··on Unciv
That reminds me that Zachtronics Solitaire is available on Android. It's the solitaire minigames from all the Zachtronics games, plus a new tarot-based solitaire just for this collection.
kej··on Running Windows 98 in the Browser
I used the briefcase with my first 32MB flash drive to keep school files synced between home and the computer lab (and with tons of space left over!).
kej··on Apostrophe Protection Society
The variations of "an h-" are one of my favorite things to stumble on, because it's one of the few times that the written word tells you what kind of accent the writer has.
kej··on Fossil: high-reliability, distributed software configuration management system
I get the same feeling reading about Fossil as I do when thinking about how Netscape almost used Scheme in the browser or imagining if Babbage had completed the analytical engine in his lifetime or the Romans had built a steam engine. Like it's a glimpse into a different future because of some road not taken.
kej··on Last Post, Please Read
If you were worried about someone getting the password from your will before your death, you could use Shamir's secret sharing algorithm to spread a password among friends and relatives with instructions to not use it until after your death, so that some number of them have to agree to unlock it together.

kej··on The Small Website Discoverability Crisis (2021)
I went snooping in your HN profile to find the link, and that is a really well done site. Clean design, relevant pictures, and interesting material. It's probably going to cost me an hour or two of productivity today.

Link for people lazier than me: https://whatisnuclear.com/

kej··on Bertrand Russell: Why I Am Not a Christian (1927)
Idle curiosity: did reading that give you any kind of "connection" to your grandfather? I've been on a genealogy kick lately and I like when I can find artifacts from relatives I never knew, but I'm curious whether something that's argumentative and not quite as personal would have that same feeling.
kej··on Bertrand Russell: Why I Am Not a Christian (1927)
Lewis probably stated it better than anyone else, but the argument predates him (and Russell, for that matter): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis%27s_trilemma
kej··on Bertrand Russell: Why I Am Not a Christian (1927)
One of the most interesting reading experiences I have ever had was my library's copy of this book, in which a previous reader had added extensive commentary in the margins from a Muslim perspective. It was a fascinating mixture of agreement and disagreement that I can only sum up as "Yes, Christianity is wrong, but for this completely different reason."
kej··on The Best Timed Shot in TV History (Probably)
>this shot needed to be done right or it couldn't have been done again for years to come

There were 32 U.S. launches that year. They could have tried again in a matter of weeks. For all we know this was the third or fourth attempt.

kej··on The Svalbard fibre optic cable connection (2022)
Justwatch.com is great for checking if a movie or show is available on any of your streaming services (also handy for keeping a cross-service watchlist that will notify you when something becomes available). No relation, just a happy user.

In this case: https://www.justwatch.com/us/tv-show/occupied

kej··on Show HN: Unreal Engine 4 WASM space game
This is great, it reminds me of the feeling of cruising around in FreeSpace.
kej··on How did people deal with punch cards?
Idle curiosity: what was the step between "he got to know the guys there" and "started on his path of programming"? How did he turn knowing some computer guys into becoming one?
kej··on Comp Sci in 2027 (Short Story by Eliezer Yudkowsky)
It's not like he was able to do fan fiction without long-winded diatribes, either.
kej··on LA County's guaranteed income program to give some foster youth $1k per month
It's not quite so lopsided when you look at the whole picture, but it doesn't make as good of a talking point: https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/fact-check-richest-1...
kej··on Show HN: OpenAPI DevTools – Chrome extension that generates an API spec
It seems like you could combine this extension with some of the OpenAPI -> Python projects to get your desired result. (e.g. https://github.com/wy-z/requests-openapi )
kej··on Ask HN: How do I start teaching my 1.5yo nephew math?
Anecdotal, but I think my son's math skills owe at least as much to the Numberblocks videos [0] as they do to my math degree and insistence on showing my kids some related interesting thing whenever they have a math question.

kej··on Show HN: Paclear – A Fun Twist on the 'Clear' Command with Pac-Man Animation
I like the part about not infringing on BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment's honor. Going to start including that in my licenses.

Google translate link for the curious: https://www-pacman-com.translate.goog/jp/policy/fanmade.php?...

kej··on How to Make a CPU – A Simple Picture Based Explanation
Another fun take on this is How To Invent Everything by Ryan North. The premise is that it's a handbook for stranded time travelers, but it covers the same ideas of building from one technology to the next.
