kej··on Ghostly swamp will-O'-the-wisps may be explained by science
>And it makes me wonder if there are other phenomenons that ancient people were very aware of but no living person has ever seen.

Having grown up in the last century with camping and middle-of-nowhere road trips, I'm amazed by how many people have never seen the Milky Way (not just stars that are part of the Milky Way, but the splotchy stripe across the sky). The trends for light pollution and time spent away from cities suggest that it could become a forgotten experience just like the will o' the wisp.

kej··on Doomsday scoreboard
Pending means we haven't reached the start of the predicted time range for that event yet. If I predict a collapse in November of 2025, it would be pending for the rest of October, then active on November 1st until either the collapse happens and it becomes successful or December 1st arrives and it becomes failed.
kej··on What Unix pipelines got right and how we can do better
That would explain the strangeness of the recent spherical cows article from the same site, as well.
kej··on MicroPythonOS – An Android-like OS for microcontrollers
The name makes it seem like it's related to the MicroPython project, rather than just written in it, which feels slightly misleading to me.
kej··on IP over Lasers
I don't know why, but I would have expected higher speeds. Maybe my mind just assumes "lasers = fast". It would be interesting to know which factors make this setup unreliable at higher speeds.
kej··on An opinionated critique of Duolingo
Agreed; I think there are plenty of valid criticisms of Duolingo but that hey are more productive if we start with an honest appraisal of which things are realistic alternatives. (And good work on the treadmill, keep it up!)
kej··on An opinionated critique of Duolingo
A lot of Duolingo criticisms to me read like someone saying "I was walking on a home treadmill for 30 minutes every day but I didn't really get in shape until I started spending 5 hours each week in the gym with a professional trainer."

Yes, obviously an actual class with a qualified teacher is going to teach you a language faster than Duolingo. Obviously you will learn faster if you move to a foreign country or if you have people around you to regularly speak your target language. Obviously you can cheat at Duolingo and not learn anything, just like you could turn the speed way down on your home treadmill and not really get any exercise.

But the treadmill, used properly, is still significantly better than an extra 30 minutes sitting on the sofa, and a ten minute language lesson will still teach you more than no language lesson at all.

kej··on Supreme Court Allows Trump to Slash Foreign Aid
Right; I didn't mean to imply it was the same justices or anything. Just an interesting contrast, is all.
kej··on Supreme Court Allows Trump to Slash Foreign Aid
It's interesting that they struck down the line item veto when Clinton was president, but when Trump does it even without a law allowing it they decide it's totally okay.
kej··on You did this with an AI and you do not understand what you're doing here
>I remember in Asimov's Empire series of books, at one point a scientist wanted to study something. Instead of going to study whatever it was, say... a bug, the scientist looked at all scientific studies and papers over 10000 years, weighed the arguments, and pronounced what the truth was. All without just, you know, looking and studying the bug. This was touted as an example of the Empire's decay.

Stupid nitpick, but this is from the first Foundation novel, although it is an emissary from the empire making the case against firsthand knowledge.

kej··on Ask HN: a REPL in an IME?
There are a handful of projects for making vim available in any textbox. They work by having some kind of hotkey that opens a temporary file in vim and then pasting the contents of that file into the original program when vim is closed. Examples are vim-anywhere, nvim-anywhere, vimlauncher-kde, probably others.

If you like vim, you could just use one of those methods to do everything you described. If not, you could probably use one of those as a starting point and just change the part that calls vim to call some other text-generating program or custom repl instead.

kej··on The Fisherman and His Wife (1857)
There is a similar Dr. Seuss story that had been published in a magazine but more or less lost until being republished in a collection of shorter works in 2011: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bippolo_Seed_and_Other_Los...
kej··on Source code for the X recommendation algorithm
>tbh the real question is why didn’t twitter pre musk implement community notes

They did. Community notes are just the rebranded "Birdwatch" program that predates Musk.

kej··on 1TB Raspberry Pi SSD on sale now for $70
I feel like the Pi 4 and 5 have moved into a weird limbo area, where if you want it as a small computer there are better computers that include all the things you mentioned, and if you want it for integrating with electronics there are probably less powerful but cheaper options that would work just as well.
kej··on Minesweeper thermodynamics
Tametsi is amazing. I also like the drawing mode, and I think it should be added to the Steam overlay so that you could use it in every game.

The HexCells series is also worth a look for anyone interested in pure logic Minesweeper.

kej··on Territorial Markings as a Predictor of Driver Aggression and Road Rage (2008)
I feel like they'd have some interest in publicizing the worst of human drivers to make robots seem better in comparison, and this could tie into that.
kej··on 1976 Soviet edition of 'The Hobbit' (2015)
It's still on my to-be-read list, but anyone exploring the Russian/Tolkien rabbit hole might also like The Last Ringbearer, which is a retelling from the other side's perspective. The English translation was never officially published but is on archive.org and probably other less reputable sites.
kej··on Long Term Support
>You can copy an SQLite database file

Completely off topic, but I think it's a fun quirk of English that sometimes the choice of a/an will tell you how a person pronounces a word. You can spot whether someone has an American or British/Australian accent by whether they write "a historian" or "an historian", for example, even if you've never heard them speak.

kej··on Exploiting zero days in abandoned hardware
It would matter quite a bit to the next person on the murderer's hit list, just like it matters to people whose devices haven't been compromised yet.
kej··on Framework Laptop 12 review
Quite possibly, I will check it out. Thank you.
kej··on Yes I Will Read Ulysses Yes
I have this site [0] bookmarked in case I ever get around to reading it again. I like the use of hypertext so that you can follow the explanations you want and ignore others, and the inclusion of pictures and videos reminds me of the breathless anticipation of new multimedia experiences back when CD-ROMs started becoming common.

kej··on Framework Laptop 12 review
> thermal, fan noise issues

Anecdotal, obviously, but disabling Turbo-Core [0] on my AMD Framework 13 stopped all of my fan noise and heat complaints, with no noticeable performance impacts. It went from being so loud that my wife on the other side of the room would ask if my computer was okay to quieter than my ThinkPad, and from noticeably hot to just slightly warm.

Kind of ridiculous that it takes messing with an obscure system file to resolve it, but not any more ridiculous than issues I've had with other brands.

[0] It's `echo 0 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpufreq/boost` or something like that, and `echo 1` to turn it back on when you want that extra performance.

kej··on Framework Laptop 12 review
Lenovo seems to be joining the rest of the world with Ctrl | Fn, based on the new ThinkPad I was issued at work a few weeks ago. I know the older Fn | Ctrl systems had a BIOS option to swap them, but I'm not sure if the new ones still have that.
kej··on Fossify – A suite of open-source, ad-free apps
I just checked, and according to the reviews on the flashlight app the weekly subscription is $14.99 to remove ads. For a flashlight.
kej··on Fossify – A suite of open-source, ad-free apps
To save the next person a few clicks, these are Android apps forked from the Simple Mobile Tools collection when that was sold to ZipoApps.
kej··on Show HN: PyDoll – Async Python scraping engine with native CAPTCHA bypass
It's far more nuanced than the headlines from that case made it seem. Here is a good overview: https://mccarthylg.com/is-web-scraping-legal-a-2025-breakdow...
kej··on Apple introduces a universal design across platforms
I didn't mean the visual style so much as the "let's use the same design on phones and on giant desktop monitors" philosophy.
kej··on Apple introduces a universal design across platforms
I was referring to the idea of having a universal design across mobile and desktop, which was one of the goals of Metro, rather than the specific visual style.
kej··on Apple introduces a universal design across platforms
This feels suspiciously like the goals of Microsoft's "Metro" design from the Windows 8 era. It will be interesting to see if Apple can do a better job of keeping the same design without damaging the desktop experience than Microsoft did.
kej··on Replicube: A puzzle game about writing code to create shapes
As an aside, Python includes a `turtle` module that mimics the drawing experience of Logo. It's a fun way to introduce kids to some programming ideas.
