kej··on How did Windows 95 get permission to put Weezer video 'Buddy Holly' on the CD?
No, I'm not saying "it's obviously a father and a son", I'm saying "it's not obviously sexual or gay and it's weird that you were so concerned about that interpretation that you were embarrassed about it". I didn't immediately know it was his son and represented innocence. I did immediately know that it was probably not something sexual, and I went looking for an answer instead of panicking about anyone seeing me looking at it.

For a guy who complains about reddit so much, you sure seem intent on having a deliberately obtuse reddit-style "gotcha" argument. I'm not really here for that. I hope you remain safe from phone images that scandalize you and those around you.

kej··on How did Windows 95 get permission to put Weezer video 'Buddy Holly' on the CD?
I wasn't told how to interpret it, I saw an unusual picture and, where you apparently jumped the conclusion that it was two men that were obviously about to have sex and that it would be a scandalous statement on your own sexuality if anyone were to see you with that picture, I chose to look up what the explanation was. I can only imagine how much you must clutch your pearls when naval aviators play volleyball together in the movies.
kej··on How did Windows 95 get permission to put Weezer video 'Buddy Holly' on the CD?
... It's a father trying to protect his son from the world's dangers. Not every picture of two men is sexual.
kej··on Upcoming changes to Let's Encrypt and how they affect XMPP server operators
>when attempts were made to push through security-enhancing changes to the Web PKI, CAs would push back on the grounds that there'd be collateral damage to non-Web-PKI use cases

Do you (or anyone else) have an example of this happening?

kej··on English professors double down on requiring printed copies of readings
It's a completely innocent typo, but "the skull of communicating technical ideas" would be an amazing magical artifact.
kej··on Time Machine-style backups with rsync (2018)
The hard links are to the most recent backup before the one happening now in the script, so that you aren't storing full copies of files that haven't changed between backups.
kej··on Outsourcing thinking
Do you remember the title of that story, by chance?
kej··on Show HN: A MitM proxy to see what your LLM tools are sending
Would you mind sharing more details about how you do this? What do you add to your AI prompts to make it hand those tasks off to you?
kej··on Exactitude in Science – Borges (1946) [pdf]
That definitely sounds like part of what I remember. Possibly I read several similar stories around the same time and merged them in my head. Thanks!
kej··on Exactitude in Science – Borges (1946) [pdf]
This seems like a good place to ask: I have a memory of a longer story along very similar lines. Maps are made that are increasingly larger, but in the version I'm remembering the maps are in a room of a palace or something?

Does this ring a bell to anyone?

kej··on Show HN: Zsweep – Play Minesweeper using only Vim motions
This is a fun idea and the implementation works pretty well.

The only complaint I have is that enter for clearing feels awkward in conjunction with hjkl movement; maybe add (d)elete and (f)lag as alternatives to enter and space to keep everything on the home row without requiring stretching?

kej··on Ask HN: What did you find out or explore today?
I've heard it as "my hobby is finding new hobbies".
kej··on Show HN: Axis – A systems programming language with Python syntax
It's definitely odd that someone who allegedly wrote a complete compiler in Python would describe something that is obviously Rust syntax as Python-like.
kej··on Lego unveils a technology-packed Smart Brick
It seems like there's a lot still to see about how these work and interact, but from initial impressions I don't see these outshining Spark Blocks, a recent kickstarter that my 9 year old son is having tons of fun with: https://www.blockandcode.com/
kej··on GOG is getting acquired by its original co-founder
It was "good old games", then they announced that good old games was going away and after everyone panic-downloaded their whole collection they announced that they weren't going anywhere but they were just going to be GOG without it standing for anything.
kej··on US Administration halted largest Offshore Wind project in the U.S.
And these talking points are always framed as if coal mines and oil wells occur naturally and there is nothing unsightly or unhealthy about them.
kej··on Show HN: Picknplace.js, an alternative to drag-and-drop
I could see this being really useful for editing lists that are longer than the page. The example that immediately comes to mind is reordering a playlist on YouTube Music, which currently requires dragging to near the screen edge and trying to convince the list to scroll while you still hold on to the item you're trying to move.
kej··on Show HN: Sqlit – A lazygit-style TUI for SQL databases
It looks like rainfrog has branched out from just postgres, but still doesn't cover the range that sqlit does.
kej··on Show HN: I designed my own 3D printer motherboard
My understanding is that home etching is probably still more practical and neither of those are going to match professional quality, but conductive filament and the "print everywhere except where the metal goes and then add metal" options should both be in reach of the upper end of the hobbyist sector.
kej··on Show HN: I designed my own 3D printer motherboard
I don't know what the state of the art is, but 3D printing circuit boards is a thing people are doing: https://all3dp.com/1/3d-printed-circuit-boards-pcb/
kej··on Size of Life
Reminds me of https://scaleofuniverse.com . I think confining it to just living things removes the perspective of "Wow, we're really small compared to the rest of the universe".
kej··on Tunnl.gg
Just want to say that I appreciate you maintaining this list. It's one of those things I need to do every now and then, so having a place that gives me a current summary of the options is very handy.
kej··on The twin probes just launched toward Mars have an Easter egg on board
Not that it changes your point, but the plaques were on the Pioneer probes; Voyager had the golden record.

kej··on Ultima VII Revisited
This looks great. I see a Linux version; do you happen to know if anyone has tried it on a Steam Deck?
kej··on Show HN: RowboatX – open-source Claude Code for everyday automations
I don't doubt you, but it would be interesting to see some token usage measurements for various tasks like you describe.
kej··on Court settlement calls for NPR to get $36M to operate US public radio system
Every local public radio affiliate station already does this.
kej··on Drilling down on Uncle Sam's proposed TP-Link ban
Do any of TP-Link's mesh routers support OpenWrt? I didn't think there was overlap between the "easy to set up for my parents" and "easy to install custom firmware" subsets.
kej··on NPM flooded with malicious packages downloaded more than 86k times
This is how most software used to work before internet package managers, and it turns out that the same people who aren't good at checking their dependencies before automatically upgrading are also not good at constantly monitoring their dependencies for vulnerabilities.
kej··on NPM flooded with malicious packages downloaded more than 86k times
Now you have the opposite problem, where a vulnerability could be found in one of your dependencies but you don't get the fix until the next "normal time that you verify that your program actually needs the update".
kej··on Show HN: Play abstract strategy board games online with friends or against bots
This reminds me of the game engine "Zillions of Games" from the '90s. It was a basic system for describing abstract strategy games and then an AI that could play them with you. They're still online but I don't know how active the community is: https://www.zillions-of-games.com/
