keeptrying··on Ask HN: Has anyone gotten complete, permanent relief from tinnitus?
I've always wondered whether I had tinnitus or not.

After listening to this I heard silence for the first time in a while. I guess I do have it. But its not delibitating.

I guess I don't get bothered by tinnitus any more.

keeptrying··on Intercom is a terrible Mailchimp. So is Mailchimp
With the advent of LLMs I really do think that we should be able to compose the services we want to match our willing-ness to pay.

I.e use LLMs to generate the required glue code required.

keeptrying··on Note-taking apps are designed for storage, not insight – can AI change that?
1. The main reason we don't leanr from notes is that its exhausting to go back and review.

2. Learning requires a risk of loss. Without some kind of loss being averted, your mind won't retain nor focus on the subject at hand.

This is why TV and entertainment or fiction rarely help us learn anything.

BENEFITS

The biggest benefit of note taking is 1. Writing the notes helps your instantly retain - hand written notes much more so 2. you miss about 20%-80% of verbal information when its presented first tiem - especially subjects we aren't familair with.

keeptrying··on We’re all just temporarily abled
So true.

If you can watch a blind person use a iphone to call an uber, it'll etch in your mind how hard we make it.

keeptrying··on Ask HN: Is making a self taught transition to AI/ML related fields possible?
Yes definitely possible. I did this 6 years ago.

1. Find the best 1,2 courses for AI/ML At the time the Udacity self driving course was a great course from a basic Udacity ML intro course to a full system that

2. Allocate 2-4 hours a day for this. This is a heavy course and a lot to learn so you have to work really hard to get this done.

3. Final project should be impressive to people int he field. So for example I implemented a YOLO alternative from their paper. You’ll have to do something similar and show results.

Then getting a job is a completely different skill and you’ll be looking at a job on the margins. Keep backup options in lower pay jobs in startups or in non tech companies if your dream jobs don’t pan out.

It could take 6 months to 9 months to understand the content and then 6-9 months to get a job. IF you are okay with that … then do it.

Having ML + software eng background is really good spot to be in.

keeptrying··on Show HN: Learn a language quickly by practising speaking with AI
I was searching for something like this as a complement to Duolingo.

Duolingo is good for memorization but not for actual using the language in real life. Spanish is spoken so fast that something like this really really helps to understand the spoken language at the speed fo native speakers.

I had been thinking of this use case for a while but had too many other things going on.

keeptrying··on Show HN: Learn a language quickly by practising speaking with AI
Nice work. Would be nice to for the app to modulate difficulty dependent on respnoses.

How did you get it to respond so fast?

keeptrying··on Bad waitress: Dying on your feet
A problem I've always thought about

"What app could help waitstaff move onto better paying positions?"

- They are very tired after the day so can't really learn after work.

- They usually don't have the resources to do a dev-bootcamp and dev-bootcamps don't seem to be well done.

- Copywriting is dead.

Solving for time is hard.

keeptrying··on Peloton CEO quit after laying off 2,800. A lesson about how not to lead (2022)
If you’re an employee it’s going to be even more important to understand the business you join.

When choosing a company you are defacto making a heavy bet on the CEO whether you like it or not. Especially in a Down economy.

The only way to really understand this is to try to start your own company. It’ll be come instantly clear to you.

keeptrying··on Lyft to Cut at Least 1,200 Jobs in New Round of Layoffs to Reduce Costs
Dead company walking.

Can't expect to cut 30% of a struggling company's workforce and expect growth to keep happening.

Seems like a last ditch effort at shoring things up. Or cutting enough to look good enough to sell.

keeptrying··on Launch HN: Codeparrot (YC W23) – Automated API testing using production traffic
Nothing gives you confidence in your system than testing on high variance sample of last 4 months of production traffic.

Especially for rewrites or code refactorings.

I've built this system at many companies myself. Never thought of doing this as a service for others.

keeptrying··on California increases proposed reparation payments to $360K per person
One side effect of this is that it will make housing even more unaffordable in the Bay and California as there will be a surge in demand.
keeptrying··on Maybe treating housing as an investment was a mistake
"Upside" problems/opportunities that take a generation to solve/understand (w.r.t a family context):

1. value of going to college

2. investing in real estate

3. creating a profitable business

Once your parents achieve one of these, in a lot of cases, kids learn via osmosis.

"Downside" problems that are also usually generational:

1. creating/maintaining a strong relationship with spouse (not getting divorced)

2. staying healthy - no type 3 diabetes etc.

keeptrying··on Ask HN: I Need to Talk to Someone
You have 2 very big problems happening at the same time: 1. You don't have a job 2. You are transitioning to a new career

Acknowledge this is very difficult situation. Usually people can deal with 1 problem at a time but its still very stressful. 2 is really hard. If you can deal with 3 you are a mensch. (eg: dealing with new baby, starting a company, deal with aged parent all at same time).

What you can do:

1. Work at your skills. Create a 40 hour schedule for yourself filled with job applications, becoming better at skills (educative.io is a great resource for indepth technical topics and interviewing skills ) .

2. Enjoy this break. Weird as this sounds - you have the rest of your life to work. What you can do is workout, get back into the best shape of yourlife. Travel either locally or with spouse - make sure she is happy.

3. Help others. Helping anyone will help your mental health tremendously. It can be at a soup kitchen or anywhere else. Help friends in similar situations. Write a blog for others in similar situation.

keeptrying··on Ask HN: With recent layoffs, how would you advise new grads entering the market?
You need to be applying to 20 jobs a day.

Pay for something that helps you mass apply - I think there are tools out there. Unfortunately I've forgotten their names.

Put yourself in a strong situation - i.e. move back to your parents etc so money isn't a worry.

I never went to Grad School but a lot of my friends went to Grad school.

keeptrying··on Programming interviews turn normal people into a-holes
Other than the assholes, there is also the "I just found out about this 10 mins ago" guy. This guy doesn't have any questions and hasn't prepared.

This means when they ask him for feedback he'll say "Oh he was okay. Not very technical"

To solve for this guy, you need to have some very good questions about technical problems the company may be facing and then you need to be able to have insights on how they might solve this.

You essentially have to structure the interview for them. Give them the questions and then you answer and then you have to impress.

The aim should always be to impress and be liked unless you have someone who is out to prove you wrong. With those types you need to show technical superiority in addition. These types are usually small in number though.

keeptrying··on How to Befriend Crows
I live in the Oakland hills so our living room is at the height where birds fly.

Over the last 5 years I've realized that there are a pair of crows which essentially own the airspace above our house and in front of it.

Each time a hawk or owl or crane flies into this airspace, it will be hounded by these 2 crows. And it happens pretty often.

(One of the crows only has 1 leg - that's why I know its the same 2 each time. We've named him Blackbeard.)

I imagine there is so much of nature we just blindly miss.

keeptrying··on Staring into the abyss as a core life skill
Salaries/Trustfunds are the main reason that people lose this skill of staring into the abyss and or never gain it in the first place.

You literally can't build this skill without taking your own decisions and bearing the consequences of the same (without your boss shielding you).

keeptrying··on Ask HN: Has anyone here turned around their life in their 40s?
The suicidal ideation is a "bug" in our psyche.

Fully encompassing a structure where you understand that your mind is separate from you is very very important. Some useful modalities: - Integrated Family systems - Thinking of your mind as a tool that you control and use and which has major bugs. - Understanding that you are not your mind.

The other important thing you need is people you trust around you who are positive and can help you positively. Each has its own pitfalls but you can choose from: - therapist (probably the best if you can afford one and can find a good one) - church groups - buddhist centers (would recommend SGI - Sokka Gakkai International. You can find a chapter near you)

If something doesn't work and is making you feel negative. Cut it out immediately.

Start working on something you like relating to your past work experience.

keeptrying··on Kite is saying farewell and open-sourcing its code

keeptrying··on Intermittent fasting protects against Alzheimer’s disease in mice
The "type 3 diabetes" hypothesis is a great theory but has never been proven conclusively as the reason behind AD.

keeptrying··on Startup engineering hiring anti-patterns (2021)
It used to be considered hard. Happy to know that you think otherwise.
keeptrying··on Startup engineering hiring anti-patterns (2021)
The language agnostic approach works unless you're hiring for languages with a steep learning curve. Eg: Ruby Engineers.

Hire a Ruby egnineer if you want an Ruby engineer.

I've found engineers being able to quickly pickup Python, Java and C.

keeptrying··on Replit Mobile App
That joystick control struck me as a great idea.

This really opens up coding to people who only have a phone - which is a large number of people in say Rural India.

One way of working I've constantly thinking about is using replit's as the unit of work.

Imagine finishing your work and sending the replit to someone else to review, run and then push to beta. No need for any setup on the reciever side or the QA side. If PM specs are also part of this environment, its very self contained and would be a great way for remote teams to work and helps avoid meetings.
