kdamken··on Lance Armstrong: The Road Goes on Forever
Oh no! The bad man cheated at bicycling! How will the world ever recover?

On a serious note, I'm always surprised when people are surprised that top level athletes, businessmen, etc resort to cheating and unethical actions to stay on top. At that level, you basically need to be a sociopath who is willing to win by any means necessary.

kdamken··on Alphabet considers Lyft investment of about $1B
The decision for me is always based solely on which one is cheaper for the trip I'm trying to make. I'd be surprised if that wasn't the case for a lot of people.
kdamken··on Face ID is replacing Touch ID on the new iPhone X
And I thought that removing the headphone jack for the 7 was the worst possible decision they could make.

Does every design meeting at Apple start with: "What beloved feature can we remove and replace with something no one fucking cares about?"

kdamken··on Programmers who are also musicians – what's your #1 motivation? (Survey)
Music is one of the most logical things out there. It either sounds good (to you), or it doesn't. If it doesn't sound good to you, you change it until it does.

In your research, you might want to look into people who only play physical instruments, versus people who record and use DAWs to compose and put songs together on their computers. The latter is even closer to programming than just thinking about music theory, and a lot of people might be interested in learning how to do it.

kdamken··on iOS 11 Safari will automatically strip AMP links from shared URLs
So no pictures whatsoever for mobile web sites?
kdamken··on Explaining React's license
Finishing up a project at work with Vue right now, and I gotta say it's really excellent to work with. Way more intuitive than some other frameworks out there.
kdamken··on Ask HN: Projects that don't make you money but you're doing it out of sheer joy?
I don't like a lot of them but sometimes they're needed for the site.

For example I'm working on one site now where a modal lets you sign in (which involves selecting from or searching through a long list of third parties) and if it wasn't a modal it would have to take you to a new page which would be a poor UX.

So long as they're not used for those awful "sign up for our mailing list" purposes, have been set up to work well on all browsers and viewport sizes, and are accessible, I think they can be okay.

kdamken··on Ask HN: Projects that don't make you money but you're doing it out of sheer joy?
This could mess up a lot of modals pretty badly.
kdamken··on Reddit raises $200M at a $1.8B valuation
FUCK.

The design of reddit is one of their biggest assets. It's perfect for what the site is there to do. You can quickly and easily skim through and look at what's interesting to you. It sets them apart from the garbage design of a majority of sites out there. I don't want facebook, and I don't want digg.

This is really sad to hear.

kdamken··on More Millennials Are Having Strokes
I'm sorry to hear that. What were the stims that caused that?
kdamken··on How Much Sleep Do Fitbit Users Really Get?
If you get one with the HR tracking, you get more detailed info on your sleep stages - https://help.fitbit.com/articles/en_US/Help_article/2163

I'm with you though. I thought I was doing a good job on sleep and then picked up a Charge 2 and was super surprised at just how little I was getting. It's helped me get better at going to bed at a reasonable hour.

kdamken··on Automattic is closing its San Francisco office as most employees work remotely
I feel bad for those people. Unless it's their company, and they have a major ownership share, there's pretty much no reason for them to be putting in hours like that.
kdamken··on Automattic is closing its San Francisco office as most employees work remotely
This is cool when you're in college, or maybe like one year out of it.

Older adults (aka anyone over 23) typically prefer to have their own space.

And many people, surprisingly enough, don't want their job to be the sole focus of their existence.

kdamken··on How many jobs really require college?
Almost none of them, outside of STEM fields. Even then, not even some of those.

One of the biggest scams of modern times.

kdamken··on Programmers are most likely to work from home
This made me smile. It's like a cuter version of rubber duck debugging (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubber_duck_debugging)
kdamken··on How to Be Someone People Love to Talk To (2015)
By focusing on your own needs above all else. Don't worry about befriending everyone. Be authentic and find people who like you for you actually are, not because you manipulated them into it.

I highly recommend checking out "How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World".

kdamken··on Uber Driver Tip-Hustling Schemes
Tipping is the worst possible thing for everyone involved. Your employer should be paying you a living wage, not expecting the customers to do so with tips.

I highly recommend you check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_vivC7c_1k

Tipping doesn't really say much about a person other than how easily they fall for societal pressure and guilt.

kdamken··on Welcome to Glitch
"Create any app you can imagine, by remixing working code into exactly what you need."

Well that just sounds like nonsense.

"I was worried that I had no good ideas, but thankfully I was able to remix facebook with a little uber and snapchat and boom now I'm a millionaire."

kdamken··on Stories that Hacker News removes from the front page
It's sad but true. Everyone here likes to think they're an open minded intellectual, but when you see completely reasonable comments get downvoted for not fitting the narrative, it's hard to believe that.
kdamken··on I am an Uber survivor
This 1000 times. It so easy to lie on the internet. It's even easier to get riled up and pick up pitchforks. The things this person wrote about were horrifying, yes, but an anonymous post on the internet should not be immediately accepted as cold hard facts.
kdamken··on An Open Letter to the Uber Board and Investors
It's a shame a comment this logical and reasonable would get downvoted so hard.

If you don't like how a company operates, don't support that company. If you're heavily invested in that company, sell your shares and invest in a company that aligns more with your values.

These days everyone wants to go on a crusade for every single issue that comes up. They forget you have no real control or influence over what other people/entities do, you can only control what you do.

kdamken··on Software developers who started after 35, 40 or 50
That's such a joke. Anyone with the time can learn what they need to know in under a year and so long as they have the interviewing skills and a portfolio showing they can do it, they can easily get a salaried position somewhere.

Will it be at google? Probably not. But who cares? You'll still be making good money doing something interesting. That's more than a lot of people can hope for.

kdamken··on Ask HN: What is the best way to learn for the easily distracted?
Yep - which is why I said if you could get a prescription. Don't just take random pills because you self diagnosed.
kdamken··on Fluid Paint Simulation
I feel like you deserve the nobel prize for this or something. Mind = blown
kdamken··on What cats can teach us about how to live
Not sure if you saw something different, but I think slightly political was an understatement.

Hacker news is one place I go where to try and get away from all the political noise out there.

kdamken··on What cats can teach us about how to live
Opened up article, was met with politically charged ad asking me to subscribe, closed tab.
kdamken··on Ask HN: What is the best way to learn for the easily distracted?
Probably adderall, assuming you can get it prescribed.

Otherwise, I've heard good things about caffeine with L-Theanine (though I haven't tried this combo yet myself). Apparently L-Theanine takes the jitters out of caffeine and lets you focus more.

kdamken··on Ask HN: Should I continue to work for free?
WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING WHY WOULD YOU EVER WORK FOR FREE AND THEN EXPECT TO BE PAID AHHHHH.

But for real though, don't work for free, and don't work without a contract in place unless you're doing charity work. You've been working for them forever without them paying you. What incentive do they have to pay you now?

kdamken··on Ask HN: What is your morning routine?
Sad way to look at things. Have you ever had luck with women? Are you in shape? I'm guessing you might be because you go to the gym. If not, work on packing on some muscle.

Then, focus on having fun, interesting hobbies and going out and meeting people. Build an interesting life first and it will be easier to find someone to share it with.

kdamken··on What’s up with Firefox?
It's awfulllllllllll. Doing web dev work for it is a nightmare. There are always weird issues that pop up for it that don't occur on other browsers.
