Rails is a dangerous place to be throwing random data into APIs.

The built-in ActiveJob api uses them.
kayodelycaon··on Instacart director says she was fired for Democratic congressional campaign
No more than someone with a disability. Which isn’t that difficult if there is an obvious issue not related to the disability.

What gets you in trouble is not being consistent in applying rules and standards. If you fired one person for a violation but you let other people get away with it, it becomes arbitrary.

kayodelycaon··on New benchmark shows top LLMs struggle in real mental health care
This has been my experience. When it comes down to it, CBT is just more effective version of “try hard harder”.

What’s really aggravating is CBT was never designed to be a general, cure-all therapy and I think the people behind it know this. But try explaining nuance to a public that doesn’t want to hear.

kayodelycaon··on Autism should not be treated as a single condition
I don't really like the idea of my coworkers playing armchair psychologist with the people they work with. Especially if person didn't ask for it.

Symptoms of mental disorders can be normal human traits taken to the point it affects person so severely it's an impairment.

This means anything normal can be pointed to as evidence of a disorder.

kayodelycaon··on Why are 38 percent of Stanford students saying they're disabled?
The accommodation process shouldn't be easier. I had to provide documentation to an employer per ADA rules.

For real mental disabilities, extra time is actually necessary because a person's brain isn't able to work at the same rate as a healthy person under that situation.

I'm bipolar and have personal experience with this. My brain can lock up on me and I'll need five minutes or so to get it back. Depressive episodes can also affect my memory retrieval. Things come to me slower than they usually do.

I also can't keep track of time the way a healthy person does. I don't actually know how much time each problem takes, and sometimes I don't know how much time is left because can't remember when the test started. I can't read analog clocks; it takes me 10~20 seconds to read them. (1)

Extra time isn't giving me any advantage, it just gives me a chance.

1: I'm not exaggerating here. I've have dyslexia when it comes to numbers.

Here's what I need to do to figure out how much time is left:

- Dig through my brain to find what time it's started. This could remember something was being heard, something I saw, or recalling everything I know about the class.

- Hold onto that number and hope I don't flip the hour and minutes.

- Find a clock anywhere in the classroom and try to remember if it's accurate or not. While I'm doing this I also have to continuously tell the start time to myself.

- Find out the position of the hour hand.

- Tell myself the start time.

- Look at the dial, figure out the hour and try to hold on to it.

- Tell myself the start time.

- Tell myself the hour number.

- Tell myself the start time.

- Find out the position of the minute hand.

- Tell myself the start time.

- Hour forgotten, restart from the hour hand.

- Hour remembered, start time forgotten, restart from the top.

- Both remembered.

- Look at the dial, figure out minute and try to hold to it.

- Hour and start time need to be remembered.

- Combined hour and minute from analog clock.

- Figure out what order I should subtract them in.

- Remember everything

- Two math operations.

Now that I have the time and I don't remember what I needed it for.

- Realize I'm taking a test and try to estimate how much more time I need to complete it.

I could probably use a stopwatch or countdown, but that causes extreme anxiety as I watch the numbers change.

I don't have this kind of problem at my job because I'm not taking arbitrarily-timed tests that determine my worth to society. They don't, but that's what my brain tells me no matter how many times I try to correct it.

kayodelycaon··on US air travelers without REAL IDs will be charged a $45 fee
It’s definitely security related. Some states did barely any verification and didn’t have much protection against fake cards.

In Ohio, you could show them a birth certificate and Social Security card and a few minutes later have a freshly printed ID.

If you got your hands on the blank ID cards and a standard commercial card printer, you could make fake IDs all day.

kayodelycaon··on US air travelers without REAL IDs will be charged a $45 fee
As far as I know this is correct. It’s similar to what’s required to get a passport.

If you already have a passport, no verification is required.

kayodelycaon··on US air travelers without REAL IDs will be charged a $45 fee
A few years ago I had to use one of these services and all the data it had was 10 years out of date. Took weeks to reset my account because they didn’t have my current address and wouldn’t update it.

Cue notarized paperwork with witnesses sent certified mail. Verification code sent back via regular post.

Weeks later, we can do the power of attorney but one of us needs to fly out. Required two additional witness for that. Five signatures on the same document. Had to call for updates to find out if it was accepted.

Getting the forms for this was non-trivial. You had to ask for them to be mailed or emailed.

kayodelycaon··on Silicon Valley's man in the White House is benefiting himself and his friends
Congress has the power to remove the President. That’s how this was supposed to work.

IF the Supreme Court rules only Congress can impose the current tariffs, Trump will have a much harder time taking over.

If the Supreme Court is also complicit, all three branches under control of a single president.

kayodelycaon··on Scaleway turns Mac Minis into high‑density, Raspberry Pi–managed servers
They’re connected to a single USB-C cable. For many technical reasons you can’t have a simple kvm which switches inputs. You’ll need to continuously power all 9 minis some way. All nine USB-C cables will need a continuous, active connection.

To do this, you will need a smart controller that switches which port it’s talking to.

Or you can stick a relatively cheap device on every mini and and connect it to the network.

Having a “controller” for every mini means you can swap single units in both hardware and software very easily. There’s a one-to-one relationship and you don’t have to deal with pairing.

kayodelycaon··on Childhood Friends, Not Moms, Shape Attachment Styles Most
It’s really sad that that’s considered creepy.

I got a lot of flak for going to a high school play in my late twenties. I had played D&D with the kid and his mom every week for years. He was great to hang out with when he was 14.

kayodelycaon··on Childhood Friends, Not Moms, Shape Attachment Styles Most
I think it’s a bit more general than that because I didn’t have any “childhood friends”, just bullies who were never punished.

What I did have was a great number of excellent adults in my life. In many ways, they were more my peers than anyone my own age.

Their example and support made my parents instruction significantly more effective despite the serious challenges with my mental health that they didn’t know how to handle.

kayodelycaon··on France is taking state actions against GrapheneOS?
The general idea of the narrative might be set, but many times I see a company’s response in the story.

You usually have some influence. Enough people are smart enough to read between the lines to make it worth trying.

Perfect example: I had to fire someone from staff rather promptly. The reasons were serious even that not responding to questions in timely manner would have been a fatal error for the convention.

Unfortunately, there are times you can’t opt out of the game because opting out is a response. Silence will be misconstrued as support.

kayodelycaon··on Prozac 'no better than placebo' for treating children with depression, experts
Yup. Depression medication can significantly help the emotional symptoms, but that takes longer to be effective.

I’m bipolar and a lot of the medication I take does not become fully effective for months. For me, my medication slowly became more effective over years as my brain no longer had to compensate for hardware problems.

kayodelycaon··on France is taking state actions against GrapheneOS?
Having helped run a furry convention, there are times you need to talk to members of the media. Otherwise, you have zero input in the narrative.

If you make the response boring or used a canned legalish message, it doesn’t allow them to say you didn’t talk to them.

A better rule is: don’t let anyone untrained talk to journalists.

kayodelycaon··on Android and iPhone users can now share files, starting with the Pixel 10
It’s great. I used it to move entire folders from my Mac to an account-less iPad with no Internet connection.

I thought it was going to be slow, but hundreds of gigabytes was fully transferred in less than a minute.

kayodelycaon··on Ford can't find mechanics for $120K: It takes math to learn a trade
I saw the management my parents and grandparents had to deal with. I saw the hours they worked. I saw how little they were appreciated. I saw how companies screwed over people who had worked for decades.

They haven’t changed one bit.

They’re lying about how much they’re paying people. That’s a maximum you can earn working 70 hours per week, not the base.

I am completely unsurprised they can’t find anybody to work for them.

kayodelycaon··on Nearly all UK drivers say headlights are too bright
Given idea just how much more light this is:

The designed lighting for a room in my house is 2 x 60-watt incandescent bulbs.

The equivalent wattage in 3 x 40-watt led bulbs is equal to 2 or 3 fluorescent light fixtures in an office building.

kayodelycaon··on Are you stuck in movie logic?
It’s not a moon. It’s a space station.
kayodelycaon··on Are you stuck in movie logic?
I’ve often been the only person in the room willing to confront things directly. (I don’t like doing it but unresolved issues just get worse.)

What a person says about people who are not there is telling.

When it’s not outright malicious, it’s usually fear. It’s something they don’t want to happen that stops them from saying it. (Depending on the situation it may be entirely justified.)

Kindness does exist. There’s plenty of times you don’t want to upset somebody else for their sake.

There’s nothing wrong with conflict avoidance being the default. It only becomes a problem when it stops you from conflict where it’s necessary.

kayodelycaon··on Maybe you’re not trying
I’ve should’ve been a little more clear. This anticipation can be years before an actual conversation.

It’s mental training done days or weeks before an event, not hours.

During conversations my short-term memory is frequently overloaded to the point I miss words people are saying. There is no room to actively remember what not to say.

kayodelycaon··on Maybe you’re not trying
My life got infinitely easier when I realized the normal way of doing things will never work for me. Even with medication, my brain is too broken to have discipline. I can’t form new habits by repeatedly doing something. Flat out doesn’t work.

What has worked for me is getting ahead of my brain and setting myself up for success before it gets there.

I’ve also completely given up on the idea of thinking before speaking. My solution for this is anticipating mistakes before I get into a conversation and not making the same mistake twice.

kayodelycaon··on Linear algebra explains why some words are effectively untranslatable
Sofa and couch are only interchangeable in some contexts. They are different “flavors” of similar ideas.

This becomes immediately apparent (and relevant) when writing fiction or poetry. At least it does to me.

Non-fiction and spoken English do not highlight the subtleties between these words because using them interchangeably in the same work is considered bad form.

kayodelycaon··on Over-reliance on English hinders cognitive science
French, Spanish, and Portuguese are spoken across multiple cultures. So there should be enough data to test the theory.

French is a second language for many countries. So that may provide data as well.

kayodelycaon··on Winamp clone in Swift for macOS
This is awesome and I wish I could use it. Like a lot of people, I don’t have a music folder, just Apple Music.

I have a few things scattered across my Dropbox account I could collect. (Unless it could somehow use downloaded songs from Apple Music.)

Streaming music services are a blessing and a curse. I could never afford or collect the vast number of albums in my library. So lack of ownership isn’t a problem for me. The only downside is I have to use their app, which they have zero incentive to improve. :(

kayodelycaon··on Digital ID, a new way to create and present an ID in Apple Wallet
The reason is nobody trusts a single party to implement that honestly.

Last time I checked, Party X only cared about Party Y’s voters who are voting illegally. They’re perfectly fine with their voters doing it.

Technology is a tool against corruption not a cure for it.

kayodelycaon··on FAA to restrict commercial rocket launches to overnight hours
That’s a nice strawman you’re creating there.

An aircraft has fewer and simpler variables to deal with than ground vehicle.

If a ground vehicle runs a red light, it’s potentially fatal error. There are more of these for a car than there are for an airplane.

You don’t have to write automation to avoid hitting trees in a plane. An airplane just needs terrain data and a few algorithms.

There are a few enough airplanes and airplane manufacturers that you could regulate a specific algorithm for traffic avoidance.

kayodelycaon··on FAA to restrict commercial rocket launches to overnight hours
There’s a lot of automation that can be done to reduce the workload of controllers.

Making an autopilot for airplanes is significantly easier than cars.
