kayhi··on Alexa and Google Home expose users to vishing and eavesdropping
Do these devices record all the time or only after the trigger word (they would need to be always listening for the trigger word) until the end of the statement?
kayhi··on YC and Ginkgo Bioworks announce new partnership for synthetic biology startups
I would see this more of a reflection of spend matching the access to capital not that bio is similar to software. The difference between moving atoms and bits is significant.
kayhi··on [dead]
Find forums that are industry specific and read about their questions/problems
kayhi··on GitLab Strategy
Thanks for the response, I'm not in the open source community and didn't think of Gitlab and Red Cross as a similar concept.
kayhi··on GitLab Strategy
Why do people contribute to Gitlab and help a for profit company for free?

I'm curious about what motivates you such as improving a tool that you use everyday or code quality?

kayhi··on Amazon's Alexa Team Can Access Users' Home Addresses
Is there a place that Amazon states exactly what (only trigger word, plus 5 seconds) they gather and how it is used?
kayhi··on Marissa Mayer on career growth and how a revenue guarantee almost killed Google
What does that type of deal look like?

AOL had ad inventory and Google had to get enough eye balls?

kayhi··on The Heart of a Swimmer vs. the Heart of a Runner
Swimmers hold their breath constantly from turns to different patterns depending on the stroke. Also in freestyle it's common to breath in through your mouth and exhale through your nose which isn't like running which is all mouth breathing.
kayhi··on Why Evernote failed to realize its potential
Is there an OCR out there that is better than Evernote?

It is the one feature that impressed me (searchable hand written notes, etc.), but that was years ago.

kayhi··on Facebook announces next-generation Open Rack frame
how so? like commoditizing Oracle databases?
kayhi··on Launch HN: AmpUp (YC W19) – A reservable electric car charging network
"As a Nissan Leaf driver without a home charger" isn't that the main problem and not the current charging network?
kayhi··on Launch HN: Saratoga Energy (YC W19), Better Carbon Nanotubes from Carbon Dioxide
Who are the main suppliers now at the higher price points?
kayhi··on Mobile Jazz Company Handbook [pdf]
The experiments section looks interesting, can you give more details about them?
kayhi··on Launch HN: Aura Vision (YC W19) – Google Analytics for Physical Stores
Pricing?
kayhi··on Dropbox buys HelloSign (YC W11) for $230M
which two?

The risk is very different.
kayhi··on Crypto Market Crash Leaving Bankrupt Startups in Its Wake
"I am sure if that happened a year ago, that wouldn’t be a problem at all, a year ago there was a lot of free money in the market. But in a bear market there’s a change."

Ends up it's hard to run a business when you no longer have 'free money'.

kayhi··on Amazon Textract – Extract text and data from virtually any document
Wonder if they will offer a local solution.
kayhi··on Cancer-Linked Chemicals Manufactured by 3M Are Turning Up in Drinking Water
The areas are still very small including watersheds.
kayhi··on Cancer-Linked Chemicals Manufactured by 3M Are Turning Up in Drinking Water
Great point, but the articles mentions extremely small areas compared to the entire state over the period of decades.
kayhi··on Cancer-Linked Chemicals Manufactured by 3M Are Turning Up in Drinking Water
Many places in Alaska and would image other remote areas of other northern states as well.
kayhi··on Bringing transparency to ER prices, one hospital bill at a time
I can really relate to this problem as it also exists in scientific chemicals and supplies.
kayhi··on The Super-Rich Are Stockpiling Wealth in Black-Box Charities
Thanks for your comment and now makes me think there could be a bunch of wiggle room with assets that have a hard to determine value.
kayhi··on The Super-Rich Are Stockpiling Wealth in Black-Box Charities
Looks like donating to charities to get a tax break, which seems fine. Is there a way that they are controlling how these monies are spent?
kayhi··on There are now 141 bio and healthcare companies funded by YC
Okay, thought I would try to answer my own question. We write software[1] that helps research labs save money and here are companies that I'd consider bio:

Sorry if missing some:

Glowing Plant, S14

Ginko Bioworks, S14

Notable Labs, W15

Transcriptic, W15

Industrial Microbes, W15

Lygos, W16

C16 Biosciences, S18

CB Therapeutics, S18

Cytera CellWorks, S18

Hepatx, S18

Borderline:

HistoWiz, W16

Forever Labs, S17

Ambercycle, F2

kayhi··on There are now 141 bio and healthcare companies funded by YC
"I define “bio” at YC as anything enabled by biology and anything in healthcare."

Is that a common definition? I haven't consider healthcare companies as bio.

I'd be interested in the list of the 141, unsure if I'm the only one.

kayhi··on Y Combinator invests in HappiLabs to help scientists shop smarter
What would you like to see more automated on the inventory management side?

Have any examples in mind?

kayhi··on Y Combinator invests in HappiLabs to help scientists shop smarter
We put a pricing search engine in Lab Spend[1] so researchers can easily get an idea of what they should be paying.

Researchers can search for products and see a price distribution to help avoid a lab in your building paying half for the same product.

kayhi··on The financial mistakes behind why a startup laid off 400 employees overnight
What was wild to me was watching the founder being interviewed, getting praise for a potential billion dollar valuation then going out of business the next week.

kayhi··on Plan to replicate 50 high-impact cancer papers shrinks to just 18
I wrote my concerns about replicating these studies a couple of years ago [1]. In short, most papers don't have enough details to allow for a third party to replicate them.

Problem areas include detailed protocols and reagents used. If you don't what someone did exactly and what they used then replicating it is going to be very difficult.
