karpodiem··on Former Tesla Firmware Engineer Discusses the System
Banks can reverse transactions if they want to. Tesla's cavalier attitude towards manufacturing has yielded a 14% first pass through rate on the Model 3 line (which is abysmal and may bankrupt the company along with declining M3 demand) vs. the industry standard of ~80% FPT rate.

Source - https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-hit-model-3-target-by-...

We're at the point in the Tesla story similar to that of 2008 where Dr. Berry et el were watching the housing market collapse around them and the banks wouldn't re-price the swaps. Tesla is already bankrupt, most people don't know this yet. But they will.

karpodiem··on Taking Tesla Private
It's a national security interest that the United States has a automotive industry that pushes meaningful (3+ million vehicles a year domestically) volume.

There is absolutely nothing special about a Tesla BEV other than that unlike most automakers, it's extremely unprofitable. Go read Tesla's financial statements.

karpodiem··on Taking Tesla Private
I'm not fueled by oil and gas interests - I know a fraud when I see one. I'm short the equity, since dividends aren't a concern.

Tesla cannot manufacture at scale - they do not have the experience or capital to execute on this. Their financial statements demonstrate as much, and the build quality/reliability issues that are prevalent on forums/reddit/twitter demonstrate this.

karpodiem··on Apple is removing Alex Jones and InfoWars’ podcasts from iTunes
He should just put a .torrent up of the video after the show, have his followers upload it to YouTube, and have a form they can report the URL back so he can embed the video.

He won't get ad revenue, but he'll still get to his message out.

karpodiem··on Munro Teardown Shows Tesla Model 3 Solidly Profitable [video]
I'll believe it when I see positive cash flow being generated through reading a 10-K statement filed with the SEC.

Historically, Tesla has never done this without selling ZEV credits (there were those two quarters it posted a profit but the amount of cash they've burned is many times greater than those two miniscule profits they posted). I say this because selling ZEV credits isn't an advantage, any automaker can do this if they sell vehicles, even if those vehicles are sold at a loss.

...at what selling price? M3 Long Range starts at $49K, which can be configured with a $2500 deposit for delivery in a few months.

The M3 short range (starting at $35K) can't be configure for delivery at this time.

karpodiem··on Tesla meets self-imposed deadline for Model 3, rolls out 5000 cars in a week
Pre-orders are overstated. Check Twitter - people who were quoted November delivery for AWD Performance are now being told they can take delivery in July.

They'll burn through supposed 450K before the end of Q3, and then the order book is dry/cash crunch time for Tesla.

karpodiem··on Google and Nasdaq Pursuing Nano-Second Precision in Network Time Protocol
"Also, no, small traders don't lose. Retail traders et al get much tighter spreads, cheaper execution by routing to internalizers, etc."

There's liquidity until there isn't. It was easier to get an order filled during a run to the exit pre-HFT. When everyone runs to the exit in an HFT world, retail investors are the last to get their orders filled, if they're lucky.

karpodiem··on Tesla meets self-imposed deadline for Model 3, rolls out 5000 cars in a week
Until Tesla goes bankrupt (which I believe is sooner rather than later - Tesla is sitting on a Wells Notice), the charade continues.

karpodiem··on In China Trade War, Apple Worries It Will Be Collateral Damage
"Bringing down Apple may benefit nobody, but there is no longer any reason for Americans to care about the success of American businesses since they don’t share in the prosperity."

Precisely. Many Fortune 100 US companies took the vast majority of their tax windfall/oversea cash and bought back the stock. Before you say most Americans own 401K's and have benefited from this - the relative increase in 401K's is dwarfed by the increase in housing prices and general inflation. Most Americans have experience single digit wage growth since the early 1980s, while the cost of pretty much everything has increased by double digits.

Most Americans are worse off today (from an earnings standpoint once you normalize it for inflation and purchasing power) than they were 30 years ago.

karpodiem··on Netflix is now worth more than Comcast
Comcast has hiked standalone broadband to $75 - http://stopthecap.com/2017/12/21/75-month-broadband-pricing-...

Interestingly, you can get a cheaper promotional rate if you bundle local TV channels (cheaper than $75/month for both internet + tv) so Comcast can inflate its video subscriber (to boost their stock price) amount and they hope you forget you're on a promotional rate your bill jumps $30-40 after you drop off promo. You're free to negotiate (most people do) to get back on the promo rate; many people have success with this, but it's just a cat/mouse game and a hassle.

And Comcast also has a 1TB monthly usage cap. When the era of 2160p + HDR arrives in the next few years, people will chew through that cap rather quickly.

Comcast will continue to jack up standalone broadband prices to hedge against fleeing video subscribers. Why? Because they can, and have very little competition in most markets.

karpodiem··on YouTube Music, a new music streaming service, is coming soon
This is the $1000 question. Google Play Music will live in the short term, but this comment from Google indicates that Google Play Music will eventually be retired - “it’s critical we have one offering that meets the needs of consumers and artists.”

It's far more likely that the stock continues to deteriorate, and that there's a margin call at the $230 level (https://seekingalpha.com/article/4168224-musks-personal-fina...) and that Tesla is liquidated by the end of the year.

karpodiem··on Detroit Was Crumbling, Now It's Reviving
Hi there, fellow Detroiter here.

I would certainly say there is definite momentum in Detroit but I'd like to see additional angel funding / 1MM+ Series A rounds before I would use the word 'exploding' to describe the tech scene.

Second - there are some very interesting software problems that the Tier 1 suppliers (Delphi/Magna/AAM/etc.) are working on but you never hear about it. Generally working for a tier 1 supplier sucks (suppliers are always subservient to the OEMs) but you there's nothing quite like getting your hands dirty in bringing together the real world and code.

karpodiem··on Detroit Was Crumbling, Now It's Reviving
Correct. They are largely overpriced though.

karpodiem··on SEC Announces Its Largest-Ever Whistleblower Awards
They need to come down on Tesla. Musk's tweets/lies have driven the stock up to an established automaker's market cap.

The only problem is, Tesla is no where near profitable (they've lost money nearly every quarter except for two or three, I believe. And in those quarters, the profit was very small compared to other quarterly losses) as either of these companies, and the cash burn isn't stabilizing as they attempt to scale, it's increasing.

China/Europe deliveries have collapsed to start 2018. Bloomberg is tracking VIN assignments and pegs weekly production to 750 vehicles a week; that's only 25% to what Musk said they'd be doing by 2018.03.30.

S and X production during the M3 ramp up is reduced, based on channel checks.

Deliveries to regions in the US are staggered as M3's require an extensive amount of re-work before and after being received by a customer. Simply put - they want to fulfill all of their California orders to cut down on logistic costs/take payment, but their delivery centers can't handle the amount of service/re-work that would be required for all the new M3 owners.

This quarter should be an absolute bloodbath for TSLA - the end has already begun.

karpodiem··on Intel Fights for Its Future
Really? I don't need high clock speeds, I'm looking for a reasonable (48) number of PCI-E lanes and ECC support.
karpodiem··on Intel Fights for Its Future
Thanks!

*Edit - $750 is a lot for the cheapest threadripper + mobo. I'd be happy with 48 PCI-E lanes around $400 (CPU+Mobo).

karpodiem··on Intel Fights for Its Future
The C236 chipset is old as hell (2015) - they're holding back on adding PCI-E lanes, because they can.

My hope is that Ryzen 2 shakes things up / Xeon 'Entry' offers a decent board.

The Xeon D chips are a total frigging racket.

karpodiem··on Intel Fights for Its Future
