Yes that the same, in the "Your Account" section of the service you have "Chat Credits" field, it was seeded with $10 initially and I got it down to $0.11 in one evening. You are right about the pricing page, it does say it's $10/month, but I believe it's $10/month up to some amount of queries in actuality, because they obviously can't offer infinite inference for $10. Maybe I was "holding it wrong", sending too much complete files as part of prompt and the token use and context window skyrocketed, but I absolutely used my initial $10 in one evening, unlike with Claude...
karolist··on I am starting an AI+Education company
To me personally, this is the best comment I've read in my time on HN since 2011 or so. I am also building a learning platform as potential lifestyle business, having been a user of such platforms and worked in large corporate I fully understand that the groups you identify are absolutely true. One important point is that you can make successful business helping people prepare for the certificates without being the issuing party - not VC level, but still. This way you can cover some of the checkbox checkers and self-motivated learners at the same time.

Self motivated learners who will be willing to pay you can also be groupped in a few groups - the ones seeking future employment in tech sector, looking to understand the technology better and showcase it on their resume with some projects that your platform will allow them to complete and ones doing this purely for fun or to keep up, I believe the latter group is very small.

Platform alone, even with tons of learning materials will not be enough to get this off the ground, you will either need to leverage your existing audience, bringing us back to the fact that everything is an attention economy now, or, you'll need to be very advertisement heavy on YouTube, which you can bruteforce with VC investment, see skillshare for example. NordVPN took off the same bruteforce way, although in a different product category.

My platform will combine technical learning with in-material challenges, sort of a sprinkled leetcode if you will. The idea to implement a LLM side-tutor also crossed my mind.

What he's saying is that everything should be idempotent, which may be possible for local only calls and filesystem snapshots, but anything doing a network call is outside the realm of this possibility. Such a system would need to spin up a local, accurate backend for any network call, execute the call, verify the results are not catastrophic and retry with a real call, but then we also introduce time caused uncertainty as the real system may drift enough from the expected state during the local validation. A fun thought experiment but science fiction IMHO.

I tried it, uses GPT-4o, the $10 sign up credit dissapeared in a few hours of intense coding, I'm not paying $500/mo for a fancy autocomple. Manual instruct style chat about code with Claude-Sonnet-3.5 is the best price/perf I've tried so far, through poe.com I use around 30k credits per day of coding of the 1M monthly allotment, I think it was $200/y. It's not available directly in my country. I've tried a bunch of local models too but Claude is just next level and inference is very cheap.
karolist··on Show HN: Draggable tier list / Kanban board
I see a draggable component built with Svelte (presumably), all source is minified and no github link is provided. Did you mean to show that this can be done with Svelte? What is the key takeaway for readers here?
karolist··on Show HN: Mutable.ai Codebase chat that uses a Wiki for RAG
This is pretty cool, congrats on the launch. Could you run it on Blender? https://github.com/blender/blender
karolist··on Run CUDA, unmodified, on AMD GPUs
I find this strange to believe. Every big company has levels, unless your existing L7+ IC is below market, you can just pull L7+ salaried ML engineers with some secret signing bonus like literally everyone else.
karolist··on Run CUDA, unmodified, on AMD GPUs
I had't considered that angle. Is your point that Intel was the creator of x86, but software chose to support it, then AMD had nothing else but to play catch up in x86 support to be part of the software target market? If so and factual (I've no idea), fair point, I didn't know.
karolist··on Run CUDA, unmodified, on AMD GPUs
I think this could be cultural differences, AMD's software department is underfunded and doing poorly for a long time now.

* https://www.levels.fyi/companies/nvidia/salaries/software-en...

And it's probably better now. Nvidia was paying much more long before, also their stock growing attracts even more talent.

karolist··on Run CUDA, unmodified, on AMD GPUs
Was there a large entity steering x86 spec alone with a huge feature lead against their competition, free to steer the spec in any ways they choose? Also, hardware is not opensource software, you get big players onboard and they will be able to implement the spec they want every gen, software has more moving parts and unaligned parties involved.
karolist··on Tech, Crunched: How the go-to site for startup news lost its way
do they really matter anymore? I remember them from the pre 2010 days but even then it seemed to me like linkedin for startups just without the social network thing, i.e. suits posting boring things. These days I can't remember clicking an article linking there ever.
karolist··on Calculating position from raw GPS data (2017)
Time ticks at different rates depending on the strength of the gravity "force", or rather the rate at which objects fall into the space-time distortion caused by mass of the earth. Time also ticks slower for objects moving at higher speeds than the observer (satellites move pretty fast). Since GPS depends on time being in sync between the observer and satellites, the time tick is offset to account for the effects of special and general relativity.
karolist··on How to Know When It's Time to Go
RPc calls ala SOAP may have been obsoleted but things like gRPC were and are the building blocks of many large companies.
karolist··on Wikimedia Gitlab Migration Status
I have not, just read that it's a bit fresh at this point. I've not yet invested anything in my GitLab setup and will try Gitea actions before deciding. Are you running Gitea locally? How was it for you so far? Thanks

> "Gitea Actions is still under development, so there may be some bugs and missing features. And breaking changes may be made before it's stable (v1.20 or later)."

karolist··on The Experience of Deploying Next.js Apps on Cloudflare
> Do you know if you can use your own GitHub Action to build and just throw the static html, css and js at CloudFlare?

I didn't know that, how cool, I'll try it this way, thanks!

karolist··on The Experience of Deploying Next.js Apps on Cloudflare
I've setup my static (hugo) blog on Cloudflare Pages and was very pleasantly surprised by the ease of setup and how fast they start build jobs after my github's commit. The fact that you can setup a custom domain and get SSL certs all for free with their vast CDN was a nice touch too.

I found them lacking in the department of logging and debug, my custom tailwind theme minification throws away used style classes even with Safelist specified in tailwind.config.js and I couldn't figure out why - it doesn't happen on my machine. In the end I left tailwind -minify flag out.

karolist··on Wikimedia Gitlab Migration Status
Just setup GitLab yesterday on my homelab server (containerized), it's a Rails beast and takes a while to start but the product they give away for free seems very polished. I looked at Gitea too before choosing GitLab, mainly for their CI.
karolist··on Zed Editor automatically downloads binaries and NPM packages without consent
I do not have much experience with this as I've switched just a month ago, but for my codebases the editor tends to turn all project files red a few times a day and I have to use the "Restart IDE" and "Invalidate caches" quite often, this never happens with just Go codebase. It's a shame these actions have to even exist in IDE, it's like they know there's a bug in caching mechanism but can't find it, and no, I'm not using any fancy networked filesystems, just native macOS directories.

On another point I spent 2 hours setting up a Ruby interpretter because no matter what I did Intellij would not recognise my RVM ruby, I think compiling without yjit and setting up a specific gemset for the project plus a few Restart IDE and Invalidate caches later did it, but not sure.

For tailwind specifically the extension is lacking compared to VSCode, I do not have color squares for my color classes and the classes are not recognized in more difficult filetypes (i.e. erb templates). Many other extensions seem much less loved than on VSCode, i.e. continue.dev, you can read their reviews and quickly get a sense that it's much more niche ecosystem.

I love the editor experience overall and especially for Go projects, but can't switch fully yet.

karolist··on Ask HN: Is there any software you only made for your own use but nobody else?
You may be right, I considered that step but testing all this on another platform seemed too much, given I personally run this in a container pointed to a Synology photos mount point. I thought about wrapping all of this in a PyQT + PyInstaller combo with a simple button and distributing an exe for that. But valid criticism, appreciated.
karolist··on Ask HN: Is there any software you only made for your own use but nobody else?
I made a data takeout tool for the SaaS kindergarten communication platform used by my child's daycare. On it's own the software is really simple and could have been a few hundred lines of Python, but at some point I changed my mind and wanted to share this with other parents in case they find it, the things that make a project fit for publishing took 95% of actual work since you want it general and robust enough someone non-technical can use it. I now fully understand someone's reluctance to publish tools they wrote for themselves because it takes a lot of work.

karolist··on Ask HN: Did you lose your passion?
What has changed in your perspective of the world if you don't mind being asked?
karolist··on Zed Editor automatically downloads binaries and NPM packages without consent
I can confirm it is frustrating experience overall, I've moved on to GoLand and later to IntelliJ with Go plugin for Go development and never looked back. Sadly IDEA products fall apart for me in projects where multiple technologies are used, i.e. tailwind, Ruby, anything with JS, so I can't ditch VSCode yet...
karolist··on Ryzen 7 Mini-PC makes a power-efficient VM host
Same thing happened to big capacity spinning rust drives. I have 2 20TB exos and want to buy 2 more, but they climbed from ~280 moneys to 360 moneys in a few months and it feels dumb to bite now. I read that AI rush is to blame, dunno.
karolist··on Ryzen 7 Mini-PC makes a power-efficient VM host
No ECC RAM and no quicksync for Plex and frigate.video are the downsides I can see, but I'm not sure this CPU doesn't have an APU for Plex/inference so speculating on that part, can anyone confirm? I'm personally running an R230 with a P400 quadro, it idles at 45 watts with 4 SATA SSDs and is dead silent. I know that's a stretch from the claimed 10W idle Michael gets but that's not bad for me either.

Btw, thank you Michael for running a solid speedtest host which cleared my doubts about the Zyxel router init7 gave me, it's adequate enough :)

karolist··on Ryzen 7 Mini-PC makes a power-efficient VM host
I use a mixture of --advertise-subnet on a dedicated tailscale VM to act as an exit node for when I'm away and ephemeral sidecars for everything I run in containers, this gives me magic dns but doesn't work with everything. I.e. I couldn't get a transmission-torrent container to download reliably with this setup and I have no idea why.
karolist··on I am using AI to drop hats outside my window onto New Yorkers
Strange perspective, it's not like they make employees wear them around the office, it's more so a message that you're new and it's ok, relax and take your time to onboard ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
karolist··on I am using AI to drop hats outside my window onto New Yorkers
This perspective is being on the right side in the bell curve meme graph. Also why did they copy Noogler hat design?
karolist··on Raspberry Pi is now a public company
I never quite got the appeal of Rpi's. When I needed a silent low power home server box 10 years ago I went with Intel Atom x86 based board which supported virtualization and had expandable memory. When I needed a small low power box for and observer node this year I bought a Dell Wyse 3040 for 40€, also x86. If I wanted a general purpose PC I'd still go with a NuC or Minisforum these days.
