kahlonel··on Software Updates for IoT Devices and the Hidden Costs of Homegrown Updaters [pdf]
I wonder how will a Git based client-side agent fit in. Why not use an already proven tech for the rollout, and then use custom installation scripts (also within the git repo) for doing software setup? The "server" here will just be normal git server, with commit ID serving as version number.
kahlonel··on Slack down?
How can a billion dollar startup not get their status page right? It says "Smooth Sailing", when obviously nothing is sailing over here.
kahlonel··on WhatsApp told to stop sharing user data with Facebook by French authorities
I wonder what kind of data WhatsApp could be sharing with FB, given the fact that actual conversations are end-to-end encrypted. I imagine it could be something like 1) When do you sleep/wake-up, 2) Enumerating people in your social circle, 3) Guess what you're upto if you use the "Status" feature, and similar things. Now FB knows a LOT more than that about you. If you are an active FB user, it doesn't make sense to worry about what WhatsApp does to you.
kahlonel··on The FCC's Ajit Pai now openly mocking net neutrality protesters with new video
Cringe.
kahlonel··on iMac Pro Available Now
I've never used a Magic keyboard. Is it a lot like Macbook keyboards? Do people prefer it over a mechanical keyboard if they want their wrists to not hurt after a day-long use?
kahlonel··on Ask HN: What do you really don't like about status/stand-up meetings?
If these meetings were actually "standups", it wouldn't be bad. But for me, sadly, they rarely have been shorter than 20-25 minutes, which makes them just another time waster.
kahlonel··on Ask HN: How do you recover from burnout?
You're correct. Its more like avoiding it at the very hint of it appearing. Remote working can be stressing :)
kahlonel··on Ask HN: How do you recover from burnout?
If I feel like burning out, I book a train to a neighboring country, get an AirBnB in a small town and live there for 3-4 days before heading back. I only address "emergency" work-related issues during my stay. I work 100% remote so that makes it possible for me.
kahlonel··on Show HN: Ask X anything – AMA shouldn't be a one time thing
Doesn't ask.fm achieve the same purpose?
kahlonel··on Introducing the new Snapchat
There's going to be a nice little bump in their share prices. Not sure how long that will last though.
kahlonel··on Ask HN: I would pay X for Y
Try to switch your SIM card on your iPhone without having access to WiFi or any other assisting device, in a remote terrain where you need the new SIM immediately.
kahlonel··on Ask HN: I would pay X for Y
I would pay $200 for a dumb phone that only makes/receives call/texts, and has whatsapp and google maps.
kahlonel··on Ask HN: Do you read the article or the comments section first when browsing HN?
Almost always the article first. Its easy to jump to conclusions by just reading the comments, without ever touching the article; which is bad.
kahlonel··on Ask HN: What Theory, Phenomenon or Idea Blows Your Mind When You Think About It?
Butterfly effect, and as a result of it the theory that whatever we do is the result of chemical reactions happening inside of us. That means a person's behavior can be simulated given all of his state variables, which may be millions in number. So basically, nothing is random; everything in this universe can be predicted.
kahlonel··on The new MacBook keyboard is ruining my life
I've no clue which "Genius" decided to kill such majestic thing as the MacBook Air, and come up with this shit. I'm still working on my MBA '13, waiting for something similar to pop up.
kahlonel··on You fired your top talent. I hope you’re happy
If you are a CTO or manager, please do your developers a favor by not throwing buzzwords at them in 99% of your conversations that you don't even understand. As a consequence of your vague requirements, if a developer chose to implement something that you don't quite agree with, grow a pair and suggest an alternative.
kahlonel··on It’s time to give Firefox another chance
Curious to see what results will look like versus Safari on macOS.
kahlonel··on Linux System Call Table
This is very handy with the asm registers mapped to arguments. Thanks!
kahlonel··on iTerm2: Please disable 'Perform DNS lookups to check if URLs are valid'
iTerm2 is the only terminal I like in every way. Thanks for that.
kahlonel··on Global Mutable State
A great way to get rid of global data (mutable or not) is to write testable code, and then write unit tests. I'm not a big fan of TDD or unit testing, but it does force you to think in terms of "contexts".
kahlonel··on Memory allocation for the curious
Yup that's true on my machine atleast. Ran this:

  #include <stdio.h>
  #include <stdlib.h>

  int main(void)
  {
  	int i = 0;
	for(i=0; i<200000; i+= 1000)
	{
		printf("%d",i);
		fflush(stdout);
		malloc(i);
	}

  return 0;
  }

strace output where it switches from sbrk to mmap:

  write(1, "125000", 6125000)                   = 6
  write(1, "126000", 6126000)                   = 6
  brk(0x1a65000)                          = 0x1a65000
  write(1, "127000", 6127000)                   = 6
  write(1, "128000", 6128000)                   = 6
  brk(0x1aa3000)                          = 0x1aa3000
  write(1, "129000", 6129000)                   = 6
  write(1, "130000", 6130000)                   = 6
  brk(0x1ae2000)                          = 0x1ae2000
  write(1, "131000", 6131000)                   = 6
  write(1, "132000", 6132000)                   = 6
  mmap(NULL, 135168, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x7f3aa9b04000
  write(1, "133000", 6133000)                   = 6
  mmap(NULL, 135168, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x7f3aa9ae3000
  write(1, "134000", 6134000)                   = 6
  mmap(NULL, 135168, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x7f3aa9ac2000
kahlonel··on Memory allocation for the curious
malloc still uses sbrk() it seems; and only uses mmap() when requesting blocks larger than MMAP_THRESHOLD. I'll have to verify this I guess.

kahlonel··on How JavaScript works: memory management and common memory leaks
Except for the fact that the arrays you are talking about are still put on the stack.
kahlonel··on Sublime Text 3.0
I've been a loyal user of Sublime until a few years ago when I switched to Vim. Still have this beauty in my computer because of how happily it handles large files <3
kahlonel··on ML for the Working Programmer, 2nd Edition (1996)
Skimmed through first 3 chapters, because who reads prefaces anyway, and kept searching for anything "Machine Learning" related. Guess we're running out of fancy acronyms.
kahlonel··on Curl’s backdoor threat
> The sort of hypothetical security vulnerability here is likely to depend on programmer's inability to write safe C code.

FTFY.

kahlonel··on Executing an array as a function
Yes, both gcc flags "-fno-stack-protector" and "-zexecstack" allow the stack data to be executable. The stack is protected by default.
kahlonel··on Some Were Meant for C: The Endurance of an Unmanageable Language [pdf]
Did you even the read the article? How are you comparing JS, Python (or any language "gaining popularity" in your metrics) to C, when the author clearly describes the set of problems only solvable in C?
kahlonel··on OpenAI at the Dota 2 World Championships
Even with a lot of restrictions, I can't imagine how much variables this bot has to take into account; and then generate the output within a sub-millisecond time period. The most interesting part was aggressive positioning of the bot, and faking the spells to scare the shit out of Dendi (the pro player competing against it). Will definitely follow the progress of this project.
kahlonel··on Ask HN: Do you have a side project that you would like to sell?
Hey I'm a 4.2k player and a developer. I like your app's interface more than dotapicker.com. I noticed both had same suggestions for a given set of heroes. Is the source of data for both of these apps same?
