kache_··on Google’s caste-bias problem
You don't have to put up with it. Lots of great companies great out there that create a safe space for normal adults like you and I.

Vote with your feet and leave.

kache_··on 'Too many employees, but few work': Pichai, Zuckerberg sound the alarm
There's actually a clear solution to this problem. It's called URA. I think what's actually happening is that URA goals are falling short, because managers are failing to meet them.

It's war time, managers. Time to sharpen those axes...

kache_··on Ask HN: Exercises to think, then speak, more clearly?
That's the whole point :) it happens to all of us

Fix it so that it doesn't terrify you

kache_··on I replaced all our blog thumbnails using DALL·E 2
this thread is funny because I ended up spending my whole day yesterday and today heads down coding
kache_··on Ask HN: Exercises to think, then speak, more clearly?
Listen to recordings of your own speech, and then course correct
kache_··on I replaced all our blog thumbnails using DALL·E 2
some software engineers spend most of their time designing, communicating with other teams, and managing operations. It becomes the case as you get more experienced, depending on your staff engineer path.
kache_··on I replaced all our blog thumbnails using DALL·E 2
For github & google, I'd put my own money on it being >80% in 5 years. Maybe not a whole year's salary though, I'm a big baller
kache_··on I replaced all our blog thumbnails using DALL·E 2
programming is going to get automated with language models in <5 years

however, I find that my job (SWE) is about 1% programming and 99% strategizing, designing & communicating.

kache_··on Run your own DALL-E-like image generator
Don't worry, we'll get much better models at much lower costs (midjourney, stablediffusion) that you can run on your own hardware, and avoid the moral censorship that the paternalising non productive members of these companies want to subject the world to

Pepe is banned. Why? It doesn't matter. Someone will cut around, and they'll get my compute instead. And I'll get my autogenerated pepes, regardless of whether some non productive AI "ethicist" thinks a cartoon frog meme is offensive.

kache_··on U.S. Treasury sanctions virtual currency mixer Tornado Cash
Who said anything about funding north korea? Just make it illegal to do so. Why does that assume violating my privacy?

You actually can't really stop privacy enabled cryptocurrencies. By all means, I'd like to see a concerted effort to do so. (Because poking the bear will just fuel more cryptographic innovation that dodges control :P)

lol, pepe did nothing wrong

Just because some asshole uses the peace symbol, does it mean the peace symbol is hateful? Anyone who claims so is dishonest

kache_··on I used DALL·E 2 to generate a logo
image generators are cool, but there's no shortage of them (midjourney & running your own on collab) and dalle2 has nonsensical bans (why does "pepe" go against the content policy?)

Open-ai has nonsensical censorship. Dalle might be popular right now, but open-ai won't survive if they keep up their ridiculous attempts at trying to control culture. I've already got something running on collab, new models are coming out, and midjourney just got a v3 update that blows dalle2 out of the water.

kache_··on The hero's journey of getting laid off
The hero's journey is about facing a nightmare and emerging successful. So that sense, it is a hero's journey. Not everyone succeeds, but if you emerge, you are better for it.

Being so dependent on your employer that it would ruin your life if they terminated your contract is probably not a good thing. A hero's journey is about remediating that deficiency. For some people, being laid off may have been a good thing.

kache_··on The hero's journey of getting laid off
Market still seems hot for senior/staff devs. Getting laid off is a free lunch + a paid vacation to interview for a better job. Thank god I listened to my mom and learned to code.
kache_··on What’s going on with Google and Facebook hiring freezes?
>freeze

Yeah, unless you're a staff engineer :P

The fight over STSMs is only getting more brutal. More like a freeze on training engineers up to become staff members

kache_··on The hardest people for founders to hire are so called C-level executives
Mishires kill

The safest thing to do is not hire anyone

The second safest thing to do is hire your homies

Unfortunately for companies aspiring to become megacorps, hiring your homies doesn't scale

kache_··on Instagram is shifting to videos – users aren't happy
You know what? I love the new instagram changes. And everyone I know has been using it more and more over the years. Interesting that the people who hate it so much are the same ones that are using it. Data doesn't lie.

TikTok copied short form videos from.. vine. I mean youtube YLYL videos. I mean... newgrounds.

Shit's been around, and both facebook and google are going to lap tik tok. Keep up :)

kache_··on Instagram is shifting to videos – users aren't happy
High G factor correlates with high creativity. I see a direct correlation to coming up with creative solutions and being able to solve a battery of tests.

A lot of the leetcode hate mostly exists because it's hard. And a lot of coding interview problems actually require a lot of creativity to solve.

And imagine thinking that facebook isn't innovating. Facebook is leading the future of virtual reality, and leading AI breakthroughs. What do you think facebook marketplace usage is like? Just because you don't like getting tested doesn't mean people who test well can't innovate. No matter how much you trick yourself into thinking that Facebook/Meta won't stand the test of time, it has and it will.
