jyxent··on Measured: Typing latency of Zutty compared to other terminal emulators (2021)
A more recent test from last year still has not great latency numbers for Alacritty: https://www.lkhrs.com/blog/2022/07/terminal-latency/
jyxent··on Defamed by ChatGPT
There is a person in Australia who is threatening to sue OpenAI. He's given them 28 days to fix the errors in ChatGPTs description about himself. If the company is notified and doesn't fix it, maybe that can be considered intent.

jyxent··on So you've installed `fzf` – now what?
I noticed that before and am glad to see it fixed. My current issue is that typing to search is noticeably slow on a 150,000 entry history, especially for the first few characters. fzf is instant for me.
jyxent··on A Dump of the Raw Stadia Controller BT Firmware
I haven't noticed any latency issues either, compared to an Xbox One or GuliKit controller.

I have had the issue where the controller will connect but no button / axis events actually are produced. Disconnecting and reconnecting fixes it for me. This seems to be a common issue from other comments I've seen online.

jyxent··on Government investigation finds Tesla FSD engaged during the Bay Bridge pileup
> The only way you get out of being liable for rear-ending someone is if the leading car maliciously caused you to rear-end them, or if something unpredictable happened that would have made it impossible for you to avoid hitting the other car.

This is literally what happened in this situation. If you have a dashcam and something like this happens, you won't be found at fault.

jyxent··on Government investigation finds Tesla FSD engaged during the Bay Bridge pileup
Only due to the absence of other information. This is why lots of people have started using dashcams.
jyxent··on Servo’s New Home (2020)
Interesting. Igalia is going to have 4 people working on Servo starting this month: https://people.igalia.com/mrego/servo/igalia-servo-tsc-2022/
jyxent··on CDC File Transfer
Another well-cited predecessor is "A low-bandwidth network file system." (https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/502034.502052), which was published in 2001. It uses Rabin fingerprinting to define chunk boundaries.
jyxent··on Dwarf Fortress has sold half a million copies
I believe they also funded the graphics and music for the premium edition.
jyxent··on Dwarf Fortress has sold half a million copies
Probably a bit less revenue, due to regional pricing and the key arbitrage that ends up happening with that.

Still a huge success, though.

jyxent··on Linux /proc/pid/stat parsing bugs
They actually allow up to 64 characters in the kernel: https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/8395ae05cb5a2e31d3610...

This might just be for certain kernel things though. I don't see any regular processes that aren't truncated, but I see a bunch of kernel things that have more than 16 chars on my system.

jyxent··on Twitter has banned Mastodon links in name and bio for being “malware”
It is even dumber because Twitter has less ability to fight CP now.

jyxent··on Twitter has banned Mastodon links in name and bio for being “malware”
It was very intentional: https://twitter.com/brenonade/status/1603612768221155328
jyxent··on Twitter's top advertisers have pulled out of the platform
I'm not sure what you're trying to imply. It literally says that they want to maintain pressure until Musk shows he is actually committed to moderation, instead of only saying he is.
jyxent··on Twitter's top advertisers have pulled out of the platform
Musk has a history of not being trustworthy. The smart thing to do here is to wait and see if he changes his mind on a whim.
jyxent··on Twitter's engineering workforce could be down by 90%
I'm not sure he is worth emulating unless he manages to dramatically turn Twitter around. In this short period of time he has lost significant ad revenue, while dramatically increasing expenses due to the debt load.
jyxent··on Hans Niemann Suing Magnus Carlsen, Chess.com, and Hikaru Nakamura
He actually tweeted essentially the same thing: https://twitter.com/HansMokeNiemann/status/15831646060293652...
jyxent··on Whytheluckystiff's original domain back as an archive
I think they are opt-out because Wayback Machine would be very incomplete if it required opting in. They are just willing to deal with legal issues that occur due to this policy.

They have removed web sites before due to copyright claims and have a DMCA claim process.

jyxent··on Linus Torvalds: Rust for the Kernel Could Possibly Be Merged for Linux 5.20
I think it is fully supported now: https://docs.kernel.org/kbuild/llvm.html
jyxent··on Ultrawide monitors are overrated, here's why I use a 4K TV instead
I wouldn't mind a higher PPI, but with subpixel text rendering I find that the text quality is good enough for me. I'm hoping the TV resolution arms race will continue until 8K is the new normal like 4K is now. Then you will have large displays with good pixel density.
jyxent··on The human genome is, at long last, complete
These are both the same paper. The earlier link points to the preprint. The paper has now been published in Science.
jyxent··on Dual 75“ 4K TV Floor Computing
I think that is mainly due to being direct-lit backlight. I'm currently using a 43" Sony X800H, which is edge-lit, and the pixels are fully lit at my 2 1/2 - 3 foot viewing distance.
jyxent··on Ask HN: Any piece of hardware that was more of game changer than you expected?
I'm using a 43" 4K TV as a monitor now, and I really like it. It does take some getting use to at first, but with a tiling window manager I can split it up how I like and have the benefit of being able to use the whole screen at once for games and movies. Higher pixel density would be nice, because I still need subpixel text rendering to make the text look nice. But with 8K TVs coming out and getting cheaper, that would make a good combination of workspace size and decent enough pixel density.
jyxent··on Impossible food sues to cancel earlier trademark owners
Were there actually any cases of confusion? Impossible Food's filing states: Impossible X also referenced, without providing details, “several apparent instances of actual confusion.”

Unless there are more I'm missed, Impossible X's closest trademark covers nutritional supplements. They are arguing that allowing Impossible Foods to have a trademark on the following would cause confusion: "Providing information about recipes, ingredients and cooking information; providing an online computer database to consumers eaturing information about recipes, ingredients and cooking information". I don't really see any overlap.

jyxent··on Facebook Whistleblower Leaks Thousands of Pages of Incriminating Internal Docs
I'm guessing she would be eligible for an SEC whistleblower award if her complaints result in fines to Facebook.
jyxent··on Why Valve Is Switching from Debian to Arch for Steam Deck's Linux OS
Yeah, I was wondering about the Arch updates too. I had a machine that wasn't updated for a long time and had to go through the process of updating small bits at a time with archived packages: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Arch_Linux_Archive
jyxent··on I'm tired of this anti-Wayland horseshit
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=112178...

Chrome regressed on Wayland after changing the default rendering path on Linux. The slowness seems to be a problem in getting proper vsync, and there are multiple cases where it was/is causing issues.

jyxent··on Roblox hits 100M monthly active users, bigger than Minecraft
Bedrock linux is hardly just Minecraft for Windows. It is Minecraft for Android, iOS, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. It looks like it will be coming to the Playstation 4 soon too.

I use MCPELauncher to run the Android version under Linux, which lets me play with my son on his Switch.

jyxent··on Backblaze Hard Drive Stats Q1 2019
The latest design has 3 4-port sata cards, with each port running to a 5-port backplane, which connect to the drives.
jyxent··on Google unveils Stadia cloud gaming service
They announced that they have been working with Ubisoft on this. They already did the Project Stream beta test with the latest Assassin's Creed game .
