jyriand··on How to Eliminate the Dreaded “Blind Spot”
Looking over the shoulder seems like a dangerous move to me, given that a car that is driving in front of me might break at the same moment I'm looking out of the side window. Also, it somehow seems little bit disorienting. But maybe if I would get used to it, it wouldn't seem so weird and scary.
jyriand··on People with Depression Use Language Differently
What did you change in your diet?

Changing a diet seems like a hard thing to do while you are suffering from depression.

jyriand··on Ask HN: How do you guys develop mental toughness?
FYI: There is actually a MOOC going on right now called "Stoic Mindfulness & Resilience Training (SMRT)"[0]

jyriand··on Ask HN: What are your “brain hacks” that help you manage everyday situations?
Hammock Driven Development by Rich Hickey touches on this subject. Great talk.
jyriand··on Ask HN: What are your “brain hacks” that help you manage everyday situations?
Will add one point that helped me through procrastination. Learned this from writers, applies well to programming.

1. Make it your aim to write as horrible code/prose as you possibly can. It will get you started.

jyriand··on Falsehoods Programmers Believe About Names – With Examples
Small example with ny own name: In my home country im called Jüri, in Finland probably Jyri, in Russia Juri, and in the passport it’s also written as Jueri. Some people write it mistakenly as Yuri.
jyriand··on Show HN: Open-sourcing my wedding website on my first anniversary
FYI, after clicking RSVP link, all the navigation links stop working. I'm using Firefox.
jyriand··on Ask HN: I've been a programmer for 6 years, and I can't solve basic CS problems
You can try TDD-ing the problem. Although TDD is usually not the right approach for coming up with algorithms or solving coding challenges, it can guide your thinking a bit. Write a test for most simple input, solve the problem for this input. Iterate and write tests for longer inputs.

I will repeat that TDD will not give you the most elegant answer, but you will at least have an basic implementation. TDD just gives you one of protocols that you can use to solve problems.

jyriand··on Linux on Dex
I guess I'm missing something here but I'm failing to understand why would anyone want to set up work environment using their phone? As I understand you would also need a monitor, keyboard and a mouse? Isn't it easier to just use your laptop?
jyriand··on Microsoft completes GitHub acquisition
I remember that GitHub was paraded as boss-less company. But now they ended up in big pile of hierarchy.
jyriand··on Reazon – miniKanren for Emacs
Any examples you can share?
jyriand··on How to Get Kids to Do Chores: Does the Maya Method Work?
I'm not against your view, but is the water actually 'wasted'? I think the water you used for rinsing the dishes is recycled in the water cleaning facility. I might be wrong of course, but this water has to go somewhere.
jyriand··on Show HN: Select Star SQL, an interactive SQL book
It supports Firefox, you just have to enable a component from your about:config.
jyriand··on Eerie Skyglow Called 'Steve' Isn't an Aurora, Is 'Completely Unknown' to Science
Why read if others have read it already and now all the answers?
jyriand··on This AI is bad at drawing but will try anyways
Every time I look at AI produced pictures, I feel discomfort and uneasy. These pictures are like a scene from a perfect nightmare.
jyriand··on Cable networks are speeding up TV shows to cram in ads
Probably that's why soccer is not popular in US. You can't interrupt soccer game for an ad. That's not the case with NFL, where you see an ad every time players stop playing.
jyriand··on Ask HN: What is your comfort book?
VALIS by Philip K. Dick and Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann
jyriand··on Breaking Up with James Joyce
If you like podcasts, I would suggest listening Frank Delaney's Re-Joyce [0], where he goes through Ulysses sentence by sentence and tries to explain what's going on. Sadly this great podcast was interrupted by Frank's sudden death.

jyriand··on Read first pages of novels, and reveal the author and title if you're hooked
I would follow Marshall MacLuhan's advice. Open a book on page 69, read it. If you like what you read, buy it.

Also: "Open the book to page ninety-nine and read, and the quality of the whole will be revealed to you." -- Ford Madox Ford

jyriand··on The Fall of Eclipse (2016)
I'm using Intellij now, but used to work with Eclipse. And one thing that I miss is quickly starting tests. In Eclipse it feels like tests start without compilation and I get instant feedback. With IDEA you have to wait a second or two before it starts running the tests. I know it doesn't feel like much, but it's really annoying if you are doing TDD.

I started using IDEA because I wanted dark theme and Eclipse didn't have it. Probably even now you can't get nice looking dark theme in Eclipse, not sure, correct if I'm wrong.

jyriand··on Show HN: HoneyMoney – 100% more Bees than any other personal finance software
Is the rounding of planned expenses a feature or a bug? I entered 3.80 euros as an expense, but in the calendar it shows 4 euros. If I enter 3.30, it shows 3 euros.
jyriand··on Don’t Fix Facebook, Replace It
Orkut, please come back.
jyriand··on ‘The China Hustle’, a finance documentary
Dear Magnolia Pictures,

I would like to watch this documentary and in return give some of my dollars to you. These dollars don't smell and they don't look different. These dollars are all digital and not contagious, you will not catch a virus, I promise. I know that I don't live in USA, but does it make my dollars worth less? You have 18 different streaming options, I tried a few, but all of those sites discriminate me based on my location.

jyriand··on Statement by FTC Regarding Reported Concerns about Facebook Privacy Practices
I'm just seeing blank page right now.
jyriand··on How to Fall Asleep in Two Minutes or Less
Easiest method I know: Count up to ten and then down to one again. And repeat. Other way is to count down from 100, if you make a mistake or get confused, just start over again.
jyriand··on Sex Workers Say Porn on Google Drive Is Suddenly Disappearing
Are you comparing books to porn? Lets go with the comparison... Nobody is burning books. It's more like the publisher is saying to aspiring author: "Your book contains pornographic content, we will not publish this. Please find another publisher. And by the way, we lost your manuscript, hope you have another one."
jyriand··on Pivotal Software S-1
Are you talking about Gross profit? I'm not an accountant, but by the looks of their financial data, Pivotal is consistently losing money. I'm talking about Net loss 163 million.
jyriand··on A picture got my PostgreSQL database to start mining Monero
This title makes zero sense.
jyriand··on Garry Kasparov: Open-Ended AI [video]
A lot of comments dismiss Kasparov's thoughts because he is out of his element(being one of the greatest chess players of all time, but apparently his brain is too small to understand AI). Can anyone explain why he can't be expert on AI? Is it because he doesn't have a degree in CS?
