jyriand··on Hands-On Scala Programming
I would love to buy this books, but the price seems way too high. I would pay ~$20 without thinking, but seeing that bundle costs $78 I don't feel comfortable anymore. I start to second guess if I really need this book right now etc.
jyriand··on Have you ever asked yourself “how did research get done before LateX?”
It was an interesting read, as I never thought that this might be a problem in the first place. It seems that to really care/know about LaTex you have to be hard core scientist working on academia. I was wondering why it's being mentioned so often on HN. I think research specific typography can only be advanced by someone who is experiencing these problems firsthand.
jyriand··on Notion for everyone
Same here. No productivity app will win me back the time I have spent looking for them.
jyriand··on Kick the Shit Out of Procrastination
I see lot of people focusing on some kind of lifehacks and tips to beat procrastination. The truth is(in my opinion) that it doesn't really matter how ergonomic your workflow is, or how distraction free your office/desktop/phone becomes. In the back of your mind you still know about these things. You know you can open youtube any time you want and browse for videos aimlessly.

For me, it's all about stress. Procrastination is a good sign when I feel too much pressure and there's too much weight on my shoulders. Procrastination becomes a way of self-medication, shutting your mind off and forgetting about all the issues you might be facing in daily life. For some people, the only time they have the luxury to be alone and not disturbed, is when they are at work, sitting behind their computer, headphones on -- and that's the best time to procrastinate.

jyriand··on New iPhone SE
I own iPhone SE and let's be honest, this phone is designed for people living in warm climate, not someone living in nordic countries. If it's around zero degrees celius or less, then you better not take your phone out of your pocket. The battery will uncharge and phone will shut off(sometimes in matter of minutes). I thought there was something wrong with my iPhone, but it turns out the battery can't stand the cold.

-- edit Otherwise I love iPhone SE. It's almost perfect.

jyriand··on Wekan: Open-source, trello-like kanban
There is also Restyaboard [0] (you have to install it on your server)

It's open source Trello like kanban board. I think there was even 1-click droplet install in DigitalOcean. Haven't used it much, so I can't really comment how good/bad it is.

jyriand··on Ask HN: Who Is Firing?
I think it's because most of their fleet of robots was focused on serving campuses.
jyriand··on Ask HN: Who Is Firing?
Estonian startup Starship Technologies(robot delivery service) has laid off lot of people. How many is unclear. As I understand they try to stay afloat by using their robots for pizza deliveries now.

jyriand··on Show HN: I made a chat roulette for remote workers
I usually just have a twitch programming stream running in the background. I can participate in the discussion via chat if i feel like it or just focus on my work while hearing someone typing in the background. Not sure why but it gives me a sense that I’m not totally cut off.
jyriand··on Denmarks shuts down all schools, daycare facilities, universities, highschools
Is there any reasoning/science behind 100 people? Why 100 but not 1000 or 50?
jyriand··on How I made a 3D game in 2 KB of JavaScript
ClojureScript leans heavily on google closure.
jyriand··on Robinhood Traders Discovered a Glitch That Gave Them ‘Infinite Leverage’
I’m not really well versed in stock trading but isn’t there a thing called margin call that would close the position once the traders loss is close to his balance? Why isn’t it happening in this case?
jyriand··on Rejected from YC (Again)
That was also my first impression. Sounds like someone from Basecamp.
jyriand··on By Quitting Social Media You Could Read 200 Books a Year
Logistical part of reading 200 books a year seems like a bigger challenge than actually reading the books. I'm not sure I could find 200 good books to read. Basically I would have to find new books at the same rate I read them. Also, I would probably have to pre-order a month worth of books and find a place to store them after I have finished reading. Then, of course, I could go to library, but that takes a lot of time, given that I'm reading most of my free time. Seems like a headache and I need to hire a personal secretary who would provide me with a steady stream of good books. EDIT: Just realized that there already might be some kind of service, that does just that. If not, it might be a good business idea.
jyriand··on How to pack a Norwegian sandwich, the world’s most boring lunch
Question to matpakker's out here. Don't you feel hungry after eating only few slices of bread?
jyriand··on Show HN: Stack – Save and explore books and book lists
This same thing happened to me. Two fields for passwords is such a common pattern that often we fill in the blanks automatically. And I think there is a design smell in current signup page. Easiest fix would be to move the username box above password.
jyriand··on The Church of Interruption
I often feel the urge to interrupt, just to get thing moving faster, but I don't want to be the smart-ass who is always interrupting with "I know, I know". So often times I pretend that the presented information is new to me and give the other person a chance to shine. It's not always easy and here and there I blurt out "I know", because I feel that they must be thinking that I'm dumb, or because I don't want to give them the pleasure of being the first person who enlightened me about this thing. But there is some upside to playing dumb: after he has finished talking, you can comment about the subject with some unexpected wisdom, as if you just came up with it.

I don't mind if people interrupt me, as long as they stick to the subject at hand. But I hate when someone just cut's me off mid sentence and starts talking about some totally unconnected stuff. I usually see the interruption coming. They nod impatiently and I see that their mouth is already preparing the sentence, waiting for a brief pause in my flow, not hearing a single word I'm saying.

jyriand··on “Essentials of Garbage Collectors” full course is now available
Consider yourself lucky. It shows 114,99 EUR price to me.
jyriand··on Dogs’ Eyes Have Changed Since Humans Befriended Them
Getting a dog should not be an emotional decision. I have a dog and sometimes it's a lot of work. Feeding, pooping, pissing, neverending fur in the house and on my clothes, vet, constant attention seeking etc. Just to mention a few things. And if you need to travel you need a babysitter for your dog. It's easier if you have a backyard where the dog can chill.
jyriand··on The Saddest Moment (2013) [pdf]
You are misinformed. Nobody has bulldozed the graves of Russian soldiers, and there were lot of other nationalities in the red army, not only Russians. If you are referring to 2008 incident in Tallinn then the remains of soldiers were transported from City center to the graveyard. And on 9th of May people go to graveyard to pay their respects.
jyriand··on Visual Studio IntelliCode
Now I'm interested to see, how this page looks with ad-blocker disabled.
jyriand··on The ABC's of Guiding the Child (1967) [pdf]
I only see a white page.
jyriand··on Founder Books
I have read or skinned most of the books on the first page. Not really sure how much I gained from them as it seems that this has become mainstream knowledge already and you hear about these ideas everywhere.

I'm currently using Joel Spolsky's reading list when I need a good book. Here's the link: https://www.joelonsoftware.com/2005/11/22/reading-list-fog-c...

Lot of good books I didn't even know about.

jyriand··on Show HN: Turn an Excel file into a web application
You only need one tool to run your business. You can use Excel for bookkeeping, inventory, salaries, invoices, project management, budgeting, presentations, planning, forecast, brainstorming, timetable, to-do list and so on. If you would use a separate app for each of these you would go insane. Easier to learn one powerful tool than hundred small ones.

Take a look a talk by Joel Spolsky called You Suck at Excel. It's on YouTube. It will give you a quick glimpse into how Excel powerusers are using it and how fast you can create something useful.

jyriand··on My Product Is Unexpectedly Being Used to Help People with Dementia
What's wrong with you? His product is literally called "NanaGram". You might not even understand how disrespectful you are right now with this kind of comment.
jyriand··on DeleteFB: Selenium script to delete all of your Facebook wall posts
Last I remember it was supposed to be a good software engineering practice to never actually delete data from database but just mark it as deleted.
jyriand··on Why I’m rewriting my SaaS
Not sure where I heard it (probably some podcast), but Basecamp is rewritten every few years from scratch.
jyriand··on What Ancient Romans Used Instead of Toilet Paper
I might be wrong but this longform is called "feature article". It's not meant to be for quick consumption. I'm not sure what is happening with our brains, but I find it increasingly difficult to concentrate and appreciate longer writings. Nowadays everything is about getting info in small chunks. No time for meandering flow of thoughts.
jyriand··on Ask HN: Should I teach my kids to type with QWERTY or Dvorak?
Maybe not the best analogy, but teaching Dvorak is like forcing left-handed child to write with right hand. But maybe it’s other way around. I wouldn’t actively try to teach them anything, but let them learn on their own. At some point they would understand that my laptop keyboard is different from mommy’s and adapt accordingly.
jyriand··on Disney Assumes Full Control of Hulu in Deal with Comcast
Seems like Hulu is US only. At least I can’t subscribe to them where I’m living. Can’t really understand why they don’t like to take my money. I’m sure I’m not the only one who would like to pay them, so that I could at least watch Handmaid’s Tale.
