This plugin works only in android, right? Tried to install it on my iPhone but it said it’s not compatible with my browser although i have Firefox installed.
So why do you think these subjects keep popping up on HN? Maybe because there is a unsatisfied need and these articles are addressing the demand. I'm sincerely curious, because I actually like to read these kinds of articles that you are dismissing as pseudo-scientific garbage.
Maybe that was possible 50-100 years ago when you were not living in a global village where everyone around the world can come and knock on your door and demand your attention. Nowadays we need to constantly remind ourselves that we need to find time for uninterrupted focus. And these articles about deep work are just that for me, reminders.
Doing deep work in early mornings should fix your problem. Usually the fires start after the managers/boss/teammates arrive in the office. In the morning you just can ignore everything because no one is expecting you to be available.
I might have missed the train somehow. First time I heard about TikTok was about half an year ago and now it's already buying services for 800M. How did it get so big so fast or was it already huge deal in China before it reached us?
Usually I just look into source code. Use 'tree' command to see the folder structure and then pick a file that seems relevant. Then I go to the bottom of the file and work my way up (usually the main entry points are the bottom, depending on the language of course).
Never heard of this service. Seems like they have too much money at hand. When you have billions you start to think that every problem can be solved with money and that inhibits creative solutions. Instead of organic growth based on the value they can provide, they try to buy their way into the premium league.
I’m wondering if i should implement the consent prompt myself or use some plugin? If i were to implement it myself is it enough to give two options Yes/No or does the law require me to give some additional customisation options?
For me testing is a way to run small snippets of code without the need to spin up the whole application. I write lot of unit tests(almost TDD) when working with java, but when working with clojure or python I mainly use the REPL to drive the code.
"Usually" is not the best word here, I agree. What I meant is that it's "often the case". There are multitude of examples from Middle Ages in Europe(and before that), and Vikings etc. Not only people from Africa were were victims of slave trade.
I would think racism and slavery are two different things. Usually slaves and masters are of the same race. But I understand why this might be a good move, the word “slave” itself is pretty loaded with negative connotations.
I wonder how many iPhone’s have been thrown away because it’s “not charging anymore”. I have had two occasions where my iPhone was not charging and i went to buy a new one, luckily both times shop assistants cleaned the socket, pulled out all the dust balls etc and it was charging again.
What i don’t like most about scrum is the sprints. Doesn’t matter if it’s one or two weeks long, we never have a successful sprint, the velocity chart looks like random numbers, and we spend hours on debating what the story points really mean. Sprints are artificial deadlines that don’t really make any sense, developers don’t care, business people don’t care. A project i could complete in a month will take at least three months, because of the processes we have to follow. Instead of refactoring and thinking about overall design i have to worry about getting the task done by the end of the sprint.
Do you use some kind of project management tools (kanban, todoist etc) for your side projects or maybe just some plain text todo files? I find that whenever I’m trying to start a new side project I’m spending disproportionately long time searching for perfect tools and often end up doing nothing and agonising over project management instead of working on actual tasks.
There must be an package where you can give url and emacs will display the article in org-mode format. Even better would be a package for reading hacker-news, surely there must be one.
EDIT:
In fact there is a package called hackernews. You can open links inside emacs using text-based browser. No readability issues there.
Little bit off topic, but I generated a zettelkasten from C2 Wiki. There is a zip file that you can download that has all the wiki entries from 2015[0] in html format. Used pandoc to convert to markdown and then did some sed scripting to fix the links and remove some boilerplate. I can open it on Obsidian and see that OnceAndOnlyOnce wiki entry has 1,470 backlinks. It's little bit slow and I can't open the Graph view, but otherwise it usable. Tried to open the folder with VSCode and then expanded backlinks sidebar. It resulted in "EMFILE: Too many open files". Is Foam using some custom logic for linking files together. I saw in inbox.md some auto-generated text for dealing with markdown links.
What I learned is that one folder with 36000 files is not a good idea.
1000 repos seems a bit much. Does it mean that when developing a feature you have to change code in tens of repositories And then create separate commits and PRs for each of those? It just seems way too microscopic.
Simplest explanation is usually the correct one(Occam’s razor). In this case i would agree with the second or third explanations. She probably made it up. Similar thing is going on with resignation syndrome in Sweden, where refugee children are pretending to be be in coma/sleeping because this prevents Sweden to send them out of the country. In this case the woman wanted to get free treatment from NHS. Or maybe this whole story is made up.
I guess this list of movies applies to people who live in US. Available movies differ substantially between countries. With Netflix it's easy, it doesn't even show the movie you can't watch, with Amazon you have to click through every movie you are interested in to see the screen that says that this movie is not available in your region. There are even series where only one or two episodes are unavailable.
I might be totally wrong but I think making online courses might give you some passive income and learning opportunity at the same time. Of course it requires you to focus on one small/niche subject and becoming expert at it. Maybe someone with experience in making courses could chime in and tell if it's doable.
