jwithington··on Why I'm in the Army Reserve – an explainer for my friends in tech
The evidence is to the contrary--middle class and above are over-represented in the US military.

"Their median family income is more than $73,000, compared with $66,000 for civilians, and recruits are most likely to come from families in the middle of the wealth distribution, with median wealth of $87,000, almost $10,000 more than civilians."

This is for enlisted members. It's probably safe to have some intuition that officers will skew wealthier.

Join the Navy reserves like me and find a unit that supports Sixth Fleet (Europe)! No need to go green (national guard).

Thanks, this is really great. I'm in the US Navy reserves and it's fun comparing the similarities of our experiences.
jwithington··on Ranking YC W22 companies with a neural net
I didn’t quite understand how the labeling part worked. So you went through a selection of startups and ranked them? And then model took it from there?
jwithington··on YC-backed uBiome is basically Theranos-lite
What kind of information did it give you?
jwithington··on I Am a Twenty Year Truck Driver, Part 2: How Truckers Are Paid
bleak. why are there minimum wage laws that don't apply to everyone?
jwithington··on Putting the Axe to the ‘Scram’ Myth
RIP axe-man.
jwithington··on Cat Printer
Can it print GitHub issues though?
jwithington··on Longest Wikipedia Pages
Wish it were by word count!
jwithington··on Building a no-code toxicity classifier by talking to GitHub Copilot
this is cool! to clarify, it's different than the existing Copilot extension because this lets you edit existing code and uses voice commands?
jwithington··on Cloudflare have made it impossible for me to unsubscribe from marketing emails
Marketing unsubscribe flows are a mess. I've worked at places with broken unsubscribe flows and few people actually care.

It's not even a pernicious thing--meaning it's not as if marketers are like, "That's fine we want to minimize unsubs." Just getting people to care about the unsubscribe experience is really hard.

jwithington··on Don't ask to ask, just ask (2019)
thank you for making this
jwithington··on Calling all pirates: This US lawmaker wants you to seize Russian vessels
The mechanism for war would be Russians killing American privateers
jwithington··on Calling all pirates: This US lawmaker wants you to seize Russian vessels
There's really no reason to do this because it's essentially a declaration of war against Russia. If you're willing to go to war with Russia, just send the Coast Guard to seize vessels.
jwithington··on Native Matrix VoIP with Element Call
Big fan of matrix. Run a server on my RPi.
jwithington··on Modeling chopping onions: The importance of mise en place
Yes!! Exactly.
jwithington··on Modeling chopping onions: The importance of mise en place
Cleaning as you go also probably has the same impact as mise en place--driving down process variability. Less things that can get in your way.
jwithington··on Modeling chopping onions: The importance of mise en place
That's interesting. It's a data workspace platform called Hex. It's really something more like a Jupyter Notebook than a simple webpage.

I wrote some python code that's generating those charts. You're right that's overkill for what it ended up being.

I initially played around with giving the reader the ability to set their onion chopping time and see how it played out. It was getting a little complicated for the point I was trying to make I think.

EDIT: I've added that in now, which helps make it a little more fun I think.

jwithington··on Modeling chopping onions: The importance of mise en place
It's not, but trying to keep things simple. Could have been something like cooking a steak in a pan where timing is everything.
jwithington··on I wrote a program that sends cats to my phone when I'm sad at the computer
That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing. Makes me want to play around with these libraries.
jwithington··on Playwright: Automate Chromium, WebKit and Firefox

jwithington··on Number of people on government websites now
Thanks for sharing that link to USA Spending! Seems like a lot of interesting information is buried there…and they have an API!
jwithington··on Upwork asking me for a $12.5k refund as the client was using someone else’s card
what’s the point of upwork being a middle man in the transaction if they don’t assume any risk?
jwithington··on FAA investigating controversial crash video
People really out here writing articles on Christmas
jwithington··on The Economist tracks excess deaths
Uh…did Russia about to lose about 1% of its population due to COVID?? Slightly over 1M excess deaths in a country with a population of 145M.
jwithington··on Ask HN: My client want an agent on my laptop. Is this the new normal?
it sounds like you’re trolling tbh
jwithington··on Stealth bomber in flight on Google Maps
how do people find these things
jwithington··on Ask HN: My client want an agent on my laptop. Is this the new normal?
I think the OP is talking about the "How We Use Your Personal Information" on https://drata.com/privacy

That would seem to only pertain to their website. Yes, they're going to want to market it to you, so that makes sense.

The actual privacy policy for the product the OP is using is likely found in the contract Drata signed with the client company.

jwithington··on A submarine's weakness: its software?
Yes, your phone can alert you when you're traveling over the speed limit or if there are hazardous conditions on the road. VMS can't do anything like that.
jwithington··on A submarine's weakness: its software?
