jwithington··on InVision design collaboration services shutdown
so this is invision shutting down right? i couldn't really tell.
jwithington··on Naev – open-source game about space exploration, trade and combat
Better than Escape Velocity?? Gotta try it then.
jwithington··on We Need Taiwan
It is false that people generally consider themselves Chinese. Nearly 77% of people in Taiwan identify exclusively as Taiwanese: https://www.tpof.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/20210830-英文版...

It is also false that they desire peaceful reunification. The same source shows only 11% want to become part of China.

So the insistence you refer to is consistent with the will of the people of Taiwan.

No one in the Taiwanese government talks about claims to mainland PRC territory. Denouncing these previously made claims it would be a de facto (maybe even de jure?) move to independence and result in who knows what.

jwithington··on Life on board a British nuclear submarine (2012)
What did you end up selecting
jwithington··on Download Instructions for More Than 6,800 Lego Kits at the Internet Archive
dang that's a good one. i was going to ask about training a model to assemble based on this corpus of instructions.

but i think the hard part is making a machine with the tactility of a human.

jwithington··on Royal Navy says quantum navigation test a success
French (& American and Royal Navy) submarines are nuclear powered. No fuel necessary.

They do have measures of "nuclear fuel" remaining, but it lasts about 30 years (at least in the American boats) so generally doesn't impact day-to-day considerations.

jwithington··on Admiral Rickover's 'Paper Reactor' Memo (1953)
Sweet I was a submariner; QAO/DCA type and now a reservist. Love running into other submariners in the HN comment section.
jwithington··on Admiral Rickover's 'Paper Reactor' Memo (1953)
I think a lot about how the modern software solution is to automate all of the things.

Rickover believed in that AND demanded technical excellence from all of the operators. Nowadays, it seems like we automate things so that we don’t have to train technical excellence.

Rickover believed that automated systems will fail in unpredictable ways, leaving the human operators as the last line of defense. The people in the organization need to understand how -everything- works so that they can respond to these failures.

But modern orgs want to automate the things so that they can cut costs. Not Rickoverian.

jwithington··on Admiral Rickover's 'Paper Reactor' Memo (1953)
I haven’t read it, and I’m embarrassed I hadn’t heard of it.

But Rickover is the most underrated product & engineering leader, ever. So my entering assumption is that it’s worth any engineer’s time.

jwithington··on The QR-code menu is being shown the door
i love QR-code menus, especially if i can place my order and pay through there.

it's not rude. it's ultra-convenient; you don't have to wait on service. i will continue to scan.

jwithington··on Neeva acquired by Snowflake
Neeva was the first search engine to have an LLM assistant that annotated where the result came from.
jwithington··on Framework Laptop 13 Review
I think the 16" version has a GPU
jwithington··on Go with PHP
I hosted a phpBB forum as a kid in the early 2000s.

15 years later I joined a marketplace startup that was doing 10,000 transactions a day.

Built as a PHP monolith.

I was sooooo confused at first. “PHP??? That strange language I used to host a forum is powering this app??”

Turns out the founding engineer was self-taught and PHP had the most tutorials or something lol

jwithington··on Replacing my best friends with an LLM trained on 500k group chat messages
The parent comment was talking about Caprica, which is different than BSG.

But some people get worked up about how the OG Starbuck was a hard-drinking, hard-partying man but the 2004 Starbuck was a hard-drinking, hard-partying woman lmao

Are you quitting your job because you think you’re being made obsolete and are getting ahead of layoffs? What are you thinking of pivoting to?

Or are you quitting to start something?

jwithington··on An AI lawyer was set to argue in court – real lawyers shut it down
Has anyone who has covered this actually used DoNotPay?

It's just such a poor product. I'm biased towards being pro-AI lawyer, but there's no reason to think that an app that can't execute the basics will push the technological frontier of the legal field.

jwithington··on NanoGPT
What would I google to figure out how to productionize the output of this?

This repo trains a model--how would I prompt it and print the generated output?

jwithington··on NanoGPT
Jeremy @ Fast.ai says he takes this pedagogical approach because it's "proven" to be the best way to learn. He's probably right, but I do find it confusing at times because in the beginning you're just hitting ctrl + enter on a IPYNB haha.

Maybe Karpathy's approach will speak to me more--thanks for the recommendation!

jwithington··on ENavFit Implementation Update [pdf]
"NPC [Navy Personnel Command] has authorized the continued use of NAVFIT98A ['98 as in 1998] until 31 December 2023 as an alternative while NPC resolves eNavFit challenges common with new software product implementation."

The Navy's new performance review software, first launched in 2021 to replace a product from 1998, is still too buggy and won't be fully implemented until 2023 lol

jwithington··on How to sell tickets fairly
Worked in the sneaker resales world. Artists, sneaker companies, etc., are all aware that the Dutch auction could solve the problem.

But they choose not to pursue because of reputational/brand damage. It’s a shame!

jwithington··on Why did the F-14 Tomcat retire decades before its peers? (2021)
Trash aircraft. 40-60 hrs of maintenance required for 1 hour of flight. Its successor, the F/A-18, required about 10x less.
jwithington··on Meta stock price drops more than 20%
I think you're conflating "infinite growth" with "unsustainable."

Advertising can be a sustainable business model. Radio, television, billboards, etc. sustain themselves through advertising. We can quibble about their growth rates, but if advertising were unsustainable, then these industries wouldn't exist in their current form.

I think you're actually rejecting the idea that a company can sustain infinite growth through advertising. I think that's a little different from being wholly "unsustainable."

WeChat was built in 2-3 months, approved by an email that just read it: “Do it now.”

jwithington··on Use plain-text email
If I’m not phishing or tracking anyone as the sender, those points aren’t applicable. If I am, I’m going to use HTML anyway.

if you are using an email client that only supports plain-text, we’re probably already in some Matrix.org chatroom together or following each other on Mastodon and I’ll just hit you up there.
