jvanenk··on Your problem with Vim is that you don't grok vi
VIM is muscle memory to me. I don't usually think about what I'm typing. I just think: 'I want this text over here' or 'I need all these phrases replaced with this new one' and then my fingers do it...like scratching an itch.

That being said, one still needs to learn it to begin with. I'm lucky that I decided to sit down during college and at least learn the basics. I'm not convinced that it makes sense for every one to learn VIM or Emacs if they are perfectly proficient as they are now. For me, it's the right answer as long as I'm not pairing with some one who doesn't know VIM.

jvanenk··on Ask HN: Desperate Python Hacker Seeking Help and Suggestions
This post is a day old now, so I'm guessing this won't be getting too much visibility, but AtomicEmbedded (my employer) is hiring experienced embedded software developers.

http://www.atomicobject.com/pages/Embedded+Developer+Applica...

If the Embedded group doesn't look like your thing, you can also submit an application to our parent company, AtomicObject. They are also hiring.

http://www.atomicobject.com/pages/Working+at+Atomic+Object

AtomicObject normally hires generalists (which it sounds like you are), so experience with many languages and programming concepts is a huge plus. AtomicEmbedded needs a more specific developer who can get their hands messy with microcontrollers, oscilloscopes, and low level C code while still playing in the land of ponies and fairies (Ruby/Rails/Python/C#).

If any of this sounds like your thing, don't hesitate to submit a resume. We're always looking for the right people.

jvanenk··on ISP Bandwidth Caps are Really Rate Hikes
business service isn't that much more expensive than their 20Mbit service. i've been paying $75/month or so and the upgrade to business in my area is $15 more/month or so.
jvanenk··on CIA.gov Possibly Down, LulzSec Claims Responsibility
here's a thought: perhaps the fact that LulzSec is perpetrating this stuff rather than scarier alternatives like China or Russia will point out the absurdity of the situation rather than forcing heavy-handed legislation.

headlines like 'witty 19 year old college student breaks into CIA' is a lot less scary to the general public than 'chinese hackers exploit CIA website'.

jvanenk··on EU: "Making hacking tools should be illegal"
These sorts of laws need to include exceptions for tools that have a non-criminal purpose. Otherwise, a broad reading could include things like NetCat, Curl, and Apache Bench.
jvanenk··on "Amazon's EBSs are a barrel of laughs in terms of performance and reliability"
It probably has something to do with the group being very small. Sure they turn a lot of traffic, but there's only so much you can do with a group of their size on what I imagine is still a limited budget.
