justwalt··on Later school start times are associated with more sleep and better performance
I’m sure someone has previously had the thought.
justwalt··on Your New Medical Credit Score Could Deny You Care
How does the person in charge of this decision justify that kind of thing to themselves?
justwalt··on OK Doomer
I thought the speed of the new Doom was too low, too, but I think the bigger problem is the number of screen- and movement-locking events. Every time you pick up a key or do a finisher move, you have to wait 1-5 seconds for an animation to play out.

I think Doom 2016 is a pretty good and especially gory Serious Sam game. But it’s certainly not Doom.

justwalt··on New Finnish study confirms that BMW and Audi owners drive like idiots
Proud, I think.
justwalt··on I won’t buy an iPad: ten years later
I think I agree with you for the most part. I’ve got a similar setup - linux at home with an iPhone in my pocket. I’ve broken a linux installation enough times that I know well enough that I’d eventually do the same to my phone if I ran android and rooted it. It’s a inevitability for me.

I don’t need everything to be running hyper customized stuff. Sometimes simple and stable is all I need.

justwalt··on U.S. Opposed Breast-Feeding Resolution at World Health Assembly (2018)
Maybe not on some specific instances, but it’s not like this is the first time something like this has taken place.
justwalt··on Mozilla Wants Young People to Consider ‘Ethical Issues’ Before Taking Tech Jobs
Sure, but they’re addressing tech workers. I’m sure they’re trying to dissuade people from taking jobs at places like Facebook/Google etc.
justwalt··on Why Rust closures are somewhat hard
In my experience that’s true. But once you code in it consistently for some appreciable amount of time, you start to think in ways that the compiler will be happy with and that make sense from a safety standpoint. It’s getting to that point that requires a bit of work.
justwalt··on Apple dropped plan for encrypting backups after FBI complained
But isn’t morality universal?
justwalt··on Mozilla lays off 70
Right? How does one even consider posing food as a counterpoint to the claim that someone shouldn’t be making 2.3 million in one year?
justwalt··on Confessions of a lotus-eater
That’s how I interpreted it as well. I was laughing at multiple occasions.

“I was in the throes of a lotus dream”

justwalt··on After 36 years as a paid product, the Micro-Cap Circuit Simulator is now free
Cliche? Cheese?

“The true payments,” haha.

justwalt··on PayPal blocks donations to The Grayzone that mention Iran
What do you mean by “pollutive proof of work?” Are you talking about its environmental impact?
justwalt··on How to Exit Vim
At work, my desktop has tmux, but the servers we deploy on only have screen.
justwalt··on Linus Torvalds: Linux Scheduler Not to Blame for Google Stadia Port Issues
But the issue isn’t bandwidth, really, is it? I would think the ping would be the killing factor. Do they have a plan for that? Server farms no more than 20ms away from anywhere in the US?
justwalt··on Booking.com agrees to EU demands to change travel offers
I remember reading that article at some point in the past. Pretty ridiculous, having a customer lie to themselves. I can’t remember what site that was, either.
justwalt··on America’s First Amphetamine Epidemic 1929–1971 (2008)
Are you familiar with the rat park experiment? You’re making claims directly supported by its findings.

One of the most interesting was that happy rats who had pleasant quarters and social interaction would choose not to take drugs (morphine, iirc) even if they had used them previously. Pretty interesting stuff.

justwalt··on Amazon CodeGuru – Preview
I’ve never programmed in Java or Go in any serious context. What do some of those repeated patterns look like?
justwalt··on FBI warns that connected televisions can provide hackers a window into homes
I imagine part of it would be that the displays are assumed to be run almost nonstop.
justwalt··on TikTok curbed reach for people with disabilities
The “only visible in home country” clause does seem to support TikTok’s claim that they were doing it for the hidden users benefit. It’s hard to say whether or not the policy has a net positive or negative effect.

If you browse the recommended posts page on the app, it’s pretty much guaranteed that you’ll see someone who falls under the named categories from the article (queer, fat, disabled). They’re almost always showered with support and positivity in the comment sections.

justwalt··on Yahoo Pipes
Congratulations on having created something that many people seem to have a fond opinion of. That must feel good.
justwalt··on Intel's CIP wants to collect the “categories of websites you visit”
What types of ransom notes are you writing? Please come with me, sir.
justwalt··on Farewell, Cortana
Where are reminders like this stored? If you wanted to cancel that before you got home, would you have to use Siri again to do it?
justwalt··on Things you probably don't know about Go (2012) [slides]
Well, I certainly knew about the filesystem crate before, but never thought to see if it offered this functionality. Thanks for this.

> 6. Mock out the file system

Does anyone know if this is possible to do in Rust? I’ve been searching the last couple of days and I think my biggest problem is not knowing what combination of search terms to use.

justwalt··on Microplastics found in 93% of bottled water tested in global study
In fairness, that could be what he’s talking about - the illusion among consumers that bottled watered is purer than tap. But with most brands marketing as coming from some mountain spring, who’s really at fault?
justwalt··on Colorado Town Offers 1 Gbps for $60 After Years of Battling Comcast
Same thing for me. Went from 150 down to 175 down, upload unchanged. I’m only paying $40, though, so I’m not sure I’d upgrade to $60 fiber if I had the option. Might be worth doing on principle, considering how spotty the connection can be sometimes.
justwalt··on Hackers Hit Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey in a ‘SIM Swap’
Reading stories like these make me feel like it’s only a matter of time before this happens to me. Frustrating.
justwalt··on It's later than you think
I’d probably find some open source project to dedicate myself to. Maybe work towards sustainability in some shape or form, or at the very least invest in it. But it’s tough to ignore money.
justwalt··on Our journey to type checking 4M lines of Python
If I'm not mistaken, all of the types are akin to comments: completely ignored by the interpreter.
