The bank itself. They want to see where are you, what you do and snoop on anything they can about you. Having a spywa^W sorry, bank app is the best way to do that.

Source: my bank which recently 'upgraded' a browser version to a glorified SPA which even renders as a vertical oriented app on a landscape 4K monitor.

That wasn't done by some '9/11 attackers', that was done by Americans themselves.

justsomehnguy··on SIMD in the 90s: Programming Intel's Pentium MMX
Well yes but no.

GF3 was a very short lived product, even more short lived than GF2MX.

And the crucial thing here is what at the time of GF/GF2 you still could buy a computer without a proper[0] 3D and video output acceleration[1], but by the time of GF4MX (which is GF2MX on the booster shoes and VPE - and only a year and half later at the worst) you have no option not to get a full package.

SIS died, 3Dfx died even earlier, S3 became irrelevant and Intel was for the button pushers till i945 - which came only in 2005.

And while at first the price even for GF4MX420 was ~$100 it did two things:

- pushed the price for GF2MX series well below $50 (and quite soon followed the suit) so anything now had DX7 level 3D on-board

- pushed the price for every other 3D accelerator waaay down

- made MPEG and video acceleration the default in everything

[0] emphasis on the 'proper'

[1] though you needed to get out of the way to do so, eg i815, G450 - but you could!

justsomehnguy··on SIMD in the 90s: Programming Intel's Pentium MMX
Well, GPUs in a modern understanding didn't came till GF4/GF4MX, when you could get something for less than $50.. at this moment MMX wasn't anywhere because SSE was. At this point you had an overlay display for the DivX/XviD and your average CPU could display the realtime video.

The whole RAMBUS debacle... OTH DDR chipsets for Tualatin had shown what it was the end game for the P6 arch.

justsomehnguy··on SIMD in the 90s: Programming Intel's Pentium MMX
As someone on the other side... the difference was between 166 "regular" VS 133 MMX. And in less than two years it became irrelevant: '97 for MMX, '99 fo GeForce 256.

> There were many companies that had clones in the early 90s, and I wonder whether any of them still have the rights to manufacture them.

To do that they, at least, should still exist. For most of them this is not the case.

The year is 2026 and ThunderBird still insists what a single SMTP outbound server for all your accounts is totes fine. Sure, if you insist it would configure a separate one, but all SMTP configuration is under a separate "Ougoing Server (SMTP)" option and not under the account.

They are in a fine and cozy place "giving value" and "providing the alternative to a corporate capture". They are not interested.

Just another reminder what people who designs these things do not use them. Probably at all.

Useless left bar - eating space, useless top bar - eating much more limited vertical space, stupid arrows in BL corner without meaning or sense, stupid hamburger menu on the top right corner - because if you don't move the cursor a lot means you are not actually working.

justsomehnguy··on I close SSH port 22 (and what I use instead)
> if you're using key-only authentication (which: of course you are) fail2ban has literally no function (unless you think attackers are brute-forcing ECDH keys).

Why, fail2ban here still serve a very useful function: it bans the offending IP from talking to the machine. It's a simple and a very effective heuristic to block both non-offending port-scans and offending too.

> basically two ways

It's always amusing what people like you almost demand what ssh should be run on the port 22 but are fine with a random port for WireGuard.

And for all of you to assume what both 22/tcp and WireGuard are always available and never blocked.
